We went to a wedding/reception there and it was beautiful. The downfall is the bathroom. There are single stall bathrooms available (one each). They are ADA compliant BUT getting a wheelchair to the ADA compliant bathroom was impossible. The pathway was widely spaced flat stones with gravel. They really need to pave a path and maybe consider additional facilities for the number of people attending. I had called prior to attending the event and was told the wheelchair would work, but for us, it did not. Also the pathway to the bathrooms was not covered and it was raining, so those needing to go got soaked.. improvements would be nice. Definitely not handicap friendly. read more

I got married this past weekend! And I just want to say thank you to Ben! Ben was super amazing throughout the whole process. From day one he answered all the questions, phone calls, and anything and everything we needed. He had many suggestions on who we should get as our bartenders, photographers, and caterers. He also had a lot of decorations available, which helped us save a lot of money! And make matters even better we got the trash package which was so worth it at the end of the night! He had it all. The day of the wedding he was there the whole time helping and answering questions. He was like a shadow. Never seen but also always there. I was so disappointed with my interaction with Ben, the owner of The Willow Tree. After we signed our contract I looked into the industrial heaters he said we might need to heat the barn for our November 1st wedding date, and discovered it to be an additional $700 expense. My mistake for not getting this information before signing, but what can I say; I've never planned a wedding before, and Ben's urgent tone hastened my decision to book. Putting aside the fact that clients should reasonably expect their host to, at a minimum, provide heat for their venue (let alone a place to deposit garbage, adequate restrooms, and cooler space), what really upset me was that when I let Ben know I was having a hard time rationalizing the added cost and sheepishly asked if it would be possible to cancel and refund our $800 deposit, he refused, even though it was ELEVEN months in advance. Almost an entire year left for someone else to snag the date, which was the only Saturday left open on The Willow Tree's calendar. Surely a venue in such high demand would have no trouble rebooking the date. Then I asked if he'd consider hanging onto our money until the date was rebooked. Nope! Now, I understand that a contract is a contract, but there is also simple human decency to consider. We are a young couple paying for our own wedding, and losing that deposit was quite devastating. Finally he agreed to refund $200 of our deposit if someone else took our date. Not surprisingly, the date ended up being taken by another couple. He did not contact us, of course; I had to check facebook to see for myself once the date arrived. When we contacted him about the $200 refund, first he pretended not to know what we were talking about, then he flat out refused, again saying "a contract is a contract." Finally, after some more pushing, he sent a check. Everyone knows that contracts are binding, but this was the behavior of a jerk. A greedy one. It's a shame such a beautiful and historic property fell into the hands of someone so shady. read more

Boy oh boy. Where do I start? First of all, the grounds of the Willow Tree are beautiful. The house is well cared for, the barn is one of the better rustic wedding venues my wife and I looked at pre-wedding, and we fell in love with it immediately. Unfortunately, we fell in love with the venue before meeting the owner. Someone needs to give Ben lessons in manners, customer service, and human decency. Of course, I doubt he cares about this considering the amount of money he brings in (which, of course, rose by over $1000 between booking the date and signing the contract...). My wife and I are pretty resilient people. We get over being disrespected pretty easily. The early signs of disrespect on Ben's end were easy to look past, especially because we wouldn't need to deal with him for another year until the actual date of the wedding. Well, that year passed quickly. The week before the wedding, the wedding forecast called for rain, and lots of it. As the Willow Tree is mostly an outdoor venue, my wife was justifiably a bit nervous. Luckily, a phone call from Ben came late Wednesday night, the night before the rehearsal. Great! He was going to be able to relieve some of our fears! Nope! It was a perfect opportunity for him to upsell a panicking bride, and boy did he take it. He started off the conversation by telling a frantic bride that it was going to rain on her wedding day. What little hope she had been holding out for a sunny day had been completely smashed. And, look at that! The temperatures have dipped. Looks like you'll need some heaters! Ben immediately tried to sell us four heaters (listed at around $80 a pop), which he let us know might not even work. Sounds good Ben! Sign us up! Luckily we weren't that naive. Vandalia Rentals, about an exit away, was able to give us a space heater that did a much better job of heating up the barn than the two measly heaters Ben ended up talking us into buying. Definitely go that route if you're planning on getting married at the Willow Tree. Since the rain was 'imminent' as Ben put it, we decided to move the ceremony in doors. Obviously this meant we would need to move the rehearsal inside as well. But wait! Ben had double booked the barn on the night of our rehearsal, which meant we would need to tip toe around a bride setting up early for her wedding during a time we had already booked the venue for our rehearsal. This was a huge disappointment for us, but luckily the other bride was super cool, and we were able to get in and hurry up our rehearsal to get it overwith. During this time Ben reminded us we needed to pay him a deposit on Saturday. WE KNOW BEN. After our confusing, hurried rehearsal, we were finally able to relax a bit before the wedding on Saturday. When our big day finally came, Ben greeted us in the driveway, holding out his hand, demanding the deposit check. Is this guy for real? He's like a movie villain. He literally cares for no one but himself. Of course we paid him right away, and after that he seemed a bit happier. Throughout the set up and the wedding, multiple guests came up to us wondering what was up with the crotchety dude standing in the corner looking like he's having the worst time of his life. That's Ben. He's a constant rain cloud reminding you that you owe him way too much money on what is otherwise the happiest day of your life. We had a young wedding, and provided all of our own alchohol, so we bought plenty. Even though we agreed we would be out of the venue by midnight, Ben ordered the bar tender to shut down at 10:30, and the DJ to shut down earlier than we had anticipated as well. When I asked him why we were shutting down early, he stated "It's always been this way". Good trick, Ben. I hope that extra half hour of no dancing really made you a lot of money. To top it all off, Ben didn't post pictures of our wedding to facebook. This sounds insanely petty, but we had honestly been looking forward to these pictures for a long time. If you look on his page, he posts pictures of literally every wedding to go through his venue. Not ours. Just goes to show that if you even hint at being unhappy with his service, he'll take it out on you in the most pitiful of ways. I EXTREMELY urge anyone falling in love with the grounds of the Willow Tree, as my wife and I absolutely did, to look elsewhere. There are plenty of beautiful wedding venues in this area with actual people with an actual soul running them. I feel extremely sorry for the weddings he's already booked. You're getting a great-looking venue, and if you can look past the money hungry owner, you'll have an amazing day. read more

The venue would get 3 stars, the owner/management (new since January 2012) would get 1 star... I'll start with some positives... The setting is beautiful. Having the tent somewhat attached to the barn is great for extra seating. Now for the negatives... For the price you are paying to have your wedding/reception or party there, there should be bathrooms. Right now there are 2 tiny glorified porta-potties. There isn't even running water to wash your hands. If you want your guests to be able to wash their hands, you have to rent a hand washing station. There is no lighting in the tent. We taped up some whitelights and had tea lights on the table, thank goodness or it would have been pitch black out there. They really need to fix this issue and put some permanent lights out there. The bridge over the pond is very rickety and uneven. Be careful!! There is a room for the bride to get ready in, with a bathroom, however, after the ceremony, they lock this and you cannot get in. As a bride with a big dress on, you don't really want to use the porta-potty. There is no room for the groom and groomsmen to hang out in prior to the ceremony. There are outbuildings and sheds, they should fix one of them up to a nice man cave for the guys to hang out in. They will nickel and dime you!! As we were setting up, my mother asked if they had an easel we could use, sure, we could rent it for $10, he made sure to track her down at the end of the night while we were cleaning up to tell her he needed that $10... We also asked about a podium for the speakers at the wedding, sure, for $15... See where I am going with that? The biggest pain in the a** though, was while we were cleaning up at the end of the night, we had to take all the trash with us. He has no dumpster or trash service. Maybe that sounds ok to you initially, but once you have leaking bags of trash juice, it's disgusting. Again, for as much as you are paying, trash should be included... The owners now live on site, so this is NOT a b&b anymore... I hope this is helpful, so you know exactly what you are paying for... read more

Can't believe I forgot to review this place, I must have started and then got sidetracked. We had our reception here and it was really very nice and laid back, something we were focusing on in order to really enjoy the day. The folks at the Willowtree were helpful and friendly, and we really couldn't have asked for a much better setting. We were looking to do a casual, outdoor wedding and reception where our guests (and us for that matter) could be comfortable. The wedding was outside, and the reception was held inside the barn (food and bar were located here), and under a large tent that extended from the barn. Everything was clean, nothing that will show up on platinum weddings but perfect if you want a more natural, relaxed wedding/reception. My folks were thrilled, as were most if not all of our guests. Also a good spot for pictures next to the house that also doubles as a B&B, a huge old willow tree (hence the name), etc. The B&B was also very nice, updated bathrooms and overall a typical, antique-y bed and breakfast. Typically priced as far as B&B's go, and PERFECT if you want to walk across the pond to your bed - plus, we got to give a few friends a place to stay as well since there are several beds available. My son and his wife were recently married here at the Willow Creek Inn. I will start with the positives! The grounds are beautiful and well cared for and this is the reason for my three stars. The barn itself is adequate and lends itself well to a rustic decor which is what we wanted. There is a tent attached which provides for extra seating. Ben, the owner, is pleasant enough to work with. He is around for your event but doesn't hover. Now for the negatives! When we first booked for fall of 2014, we were quoted a price of $1400. Not a bad price. Then the wedding had to be delayed until June of 2015 and his price increased to $2200. In fairness to him, we were told the price would probably increase, but certainly never dreamed it would increase quite that much in less than a year. Well, okay, we thought, maybe some improvements had been made. That was not the case. He has only two glorified toilets for guests, no sink to wash your hands! The barn itself is very stuffy and warm and could really use some kind of large fans to circulate the air. Our evening was not a really hot one so I can only imagine what it's like on a scorcher! While there is a nice brides's room, there is no place for the groom and his guys to dress and relax before the wedding. My biggest problem with the place is the lack of any kind of garbage removal. You are required to haul off all your trash and garbage that night or before 10am the next morning. NOT ACCEPTABLE!!! Who wants to find someone with a pickup and load up garbage while dressed in your wedding finery?? I just don't understand why he can't provide a dumpster with trash pickup. He can certainly afford that with what he gets in rental fees! You will be quite impressed when you first go to look at the place, but keep in mind there are some negatives and you will have to decide if you want to pay the big bucks for looks when you still have to pay for your rentals, catering, etc.!! read more
