36th District Court 421 Madison StreetDetroit, Michigan 48226…read more Subject: Concern regarding your impartiality in judgment and acceptance of legal processes Dear Honorable Judge Robinson and the 36th District Court I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my deep concern regarding recent events that have brought into question the professionalism, integrity, and impartiality of the 36th District Court. It is my firm belief that a court of law, at any level, must maintain the highest standards of justice and fairness in order to carry out its fundamental purpose effectively.I recently served your court with a lawsuit in accordance with legal procedures. Regrettably, despite adhering to all the necessary protocols, I have received no acknowledgement of receipt or any indication that my case will be duly considered. This disregard for such an important legal procedure is deeply concerning and undermines the credibility of the entire judicial process. It is imperative that a court, particularly a prominent institution like the 36th District Court, upholds its duties and responsibilities faithfully. The acceptance and understanding of legal processes is a crucial aspect of this responsibility. By failing to recognize and appropriately respond to the service of a lawsuit, your court appears to lack the necessary professionalism and competence to carry out its role effectively. This severely undermines public trust and confidence in your institution. Moreover, as a court entrusted with the development of justice, impartiality is of utmost importance. The failure to accept and respond to a lawsuit, regardless of potential conflict of interest, suggests a bias that impairs your ability to serve as an unbiased arbiter. In upholding justice and ensuring a level playing field, it is essential that all parties involved believe they will receive equal and fair treatment before the law. I kindly urge you to address this matter urgently and take the necessary steps to ensure that the 36th District Court reestablishes trust in the justice system. By promptly acknowledging the receipt of legal documents and taking the appropriate action, you will demonstrate your commitment to upholding the principles on which the court system is built. Additionally, providing an explanation for the delay incurred in processing my lawsuit would be greatly appreciated.I believe that the judiciary plays a critical role in ensuring the peace and prosperity of our society. I trust that you will take my concerns seriously and act accordingly to restore faith in the 36th District Court. Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter. Sincerely, James Chandler

On a typical month,…read morewe ship well over 300 packages, so I'm very familiar with how shipping locations operate and what basic customer service should look like. Unfortunately, my experience at this Hamtramck location was extremely disappointing. The employee I dealt with, Tina, was dismissive and unhelpful from the beginning. I asked a simple question about getting a label, and instead of assisting, she made the process unnecessarily difficult and confusing. I was told I needed to purchase tape, was charged for it, and never even received it. When I asked for a receipt, she did not provide one. At that point, I decided I didn't feel comfortable continuing the transaction. I asked for a supervisor, and the number I was given did not work. When I requested that she contact a supervisor directly, she refused. Another employee nearby did not step in to help resolve the situation either. Instead of trying to fix the issue, I was ultimately told they would not ship my package after already taking payment. The situation escalated further when I was threatened with the police over a situation that should have been handled professionally from the start. Given the volume of shipments we handle every month, reliability and professionalism are extremely important to us. Because of this experience, we will not be using this location moving forward and will be taking our business to another shipping facility. I would strongly recommend others consider alternative locations if they expect clear communication and respectful service. -- John Ali

In addition to Baird, there is the Old Wayne County Jail and the William Dickerson Detention Facility. This jail is newer and in some ways, cleaner, than others. But it has many of the problems that are prevelent in other urban jails. As a social worker I occassionally visit detention facilities and, frankly, I've seen better. The process for visits is very chaotic and traumatizing to both the inmates and the family members. Staff are rude to visitors, professionals (like myself) who are entering the facility on business, and even to each other. It's hard to find visitng hours for this facility, so I'll paste them in here. During my visits in June and August 2025, I found a city that's actively reclaiming its narrative. Downtown felt safe and well-patrolled, with a visible police presence that added to the sense of security. The streets were impressively clean - no litter, mostly empty but some overflowing bins, just a well-kept urban core that defied outdated stereotypes. It's clear that the city is investing in its public spaces and infrastructure, and the results are tangible. Beyond the surface, Detroit pulses with energy and pride. Historic buildings have been thoughtfully restored, green spaces are inviting, and the mix of old and new architecture tells a story of resilience and reinvention. Whether you're admiring the grandeur of the Guardian Building, strolling through Capitol Park, or hopping on the People Mover for a loop around downtown, there's a sense that Detroit isn't just surviving. It is thriving. The city still has challenges, like any major metro, but what I saw was a community determined to move forward, with grit, grace, and a surprising amount of charm. I enjoyed my time here and look forward to returning when my work gathers next year. Hopefully that's in the summer again because Detroit winters? Ouch!

The structure includes polished black granite, fluted pilasters and sculpted eagles that symbolize its purpose as a federal building. Inside, the courthouse boasts an open central court above the second floor and houses one of its most remarkable features: the Romanesque-style Chief Judge's Courtroom. This room was salvaged from the previous courthouse at the insistence of Judge Arthur Tuttle, who oversaw its careful disassembly and reconstruction. The courtroom's marble and mahogany details were preserved in over 150 barrels and reassembled using original blueprints, making it one of the most beautiful examples of courtroom design in the country. The building is named after Judge Theodore Levin, who served as Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan from 1959 to 1967. It is possible to go inside the courthouse whether you have business with the court or not. However, cell phones are not permitted. Pictures of the inside are available on the internet. It is also the place where my brother was sworn in as a US Citizen. The building is enormous -- it is the size of an entire downtown block in Detroit. For a historical building, the architecture is interesting and modern. It was the former site of Fort Shelby and the US Post Office. What I especially remember about this building were the beautiful, intricately hand painted domed walls when walking in. Sculptures by architect Parducci are also on display. As beautiful as it is, typical federal courthouse goings-on happen in there. No cell phones, no cameras, no fun. My brother was supposed to be sworn in with 200 other people at this building. However, they never called his name and he had to say, "Wait a minute! You didn't call my name!" And it took about 10 minutes for them to find his certificate in a folder, and on top of that his middle name was misspelled. It was very un-glam.
