I've dealt with different districts regarding paying tickets and this is the worst district to work with, every single time I come here they are so rude and unprofessional, especially the cashiers. Most of them come off bitter, angry, and just plain ol nasty attitudes. read more

36 District Court located in downtown Detroit. A large Square windowless building with minimal air circulation makes you very claustrophobic. It works pretty much like a factory. This Court serves everything from landlord tenant to Minor felonies. You will see people standing in line at counters on every floor. Each floor has its own designated Court system that it services. You will find real estate at one desk. landlord tenant at another desk. You will find probation department at a different desk. You will find traffic fines at a different desk. If you are coming to this building please be sure you visit their website to find out what items are not allowed in the building. I can tell you that they do not allow cell phones, ink pens, and no food or water. It is best if you only bring your ID wallet and car key if necessary. This court handles lots of cases and they get you through as quickly as they can. Please be patient with the bailiffs and also the court Personnel or they may possibly lock you up. I saw someone arguing in the hall and suddenly the court security personnel pulled out handcuffs and the police came and escorted the person into a holding cell at the end of the hall. If you are here for landlord tenant go to the second floor to the information desk for information about your case. The legal clinic is on the 4th floor and it is not open everyday. You need to be sure that you understand what documents you can bring in and in what form before you come to this building. Been on hold for over an 1 hour for attempting to change my court date #36DistrictCourt. Does anyone work there? The phone rings a few times if no one answers, there is no voice mail. Had a lady hang up when I called from another phone to complain about being on hold for so long. Service wasn't much better when I arrived to file the lawsuit . I think I will hold until my battery dies. Thought I wanted to move back. This reminded of the things I hate about the city. Horrendous. Still after fifteen years when I first moved to Detroit. You will be told that you can pay your tickets online, with a debit card. That would be terrific, unfortunately, untrue. You will be directed to various 404 page errors, and in the end be forced to go park (way to little street parking), stand in line and pay in person. The employees behind the glass move with a smug molasses like disinterest as if to be at all times saying "your problem is not my problem". I feel this, they have a tough demographic to work with. They could simply be honest and say "you MIGHT be able to pay online, the sight doesn't work well, so don't wait till the last day to find out". Other than today's fiasco, which turned out just fine, they are understaffed, need tech help, more accommodating street parking. read more

I work for a bank. I needed to verify a check written to an individual as we had suspected fraud. I called the court and a recording comes on that says, "Thank you for calling the 36th District Court. All of our agents are assisting other citizens. Please hang up and try your call again later." I tried calling several times a day for multiple business days straight and got this recording from open till close. Needless to say we could not accept the check from the client because the court refuses to answer their phones. I told the client that for more information they had to contact the 36th District Court. I doubt the client will be able to get through either. read more

No help at all. Mailed me my bond so the operator says but I have not received it. Operator basically says i cant help you. We mailed it out so our part is done. 90% of the workers there are a holes! read more

This place is kind of like the Secretary of State - it's gonna be crowded, and none of the people who are there are gonna be happy. Those visiting are already ticked off because 1. they're there because they got in trouble, and 2. they're there to pay for it, be it with time, money, or both. Those working there are already ticked off from dealing with these ticked off people all day. So I went in with a smile and a healthy amount of patience, knowing I'd need it. The biggest pain is getting in. Heads up - not only do they not allow cell phones, but no glass of any sort (I even got popped for an itty bitty nail polish bottle I had in my purse), and nothing metal and/or sharp (got popped for the tweezers in my makeup bag, too). Also, no food or drink. Leave all of these items in your car before you go in...if you try to take them in you'll either be giving them up to the guard permanently, or be walking back to put it in your car anyway. Because I had called ahead, I knew where I was heading to to take care of my ticket. I asked an officer where the office was, and he was more than happy to point me where I needed to go. Once in, the woman at the desk took my info, stamped and wrote my citation up, made me a copy for my records, and I was done! Was nice and friendly about it too. Granted it was a simple ticket for not having my registration - so I was not even paying, just had to bring my ticket and proof of registration and they wrote it off. I imagine if I was there to post bail or something more intense, the situation might not have been so breezy. As I was coming out the same officer asked if I had found everything ok. I have a thing for men in uniform so I like to think he was just finding another excuse to talk to me. ;) I'm not planning on having myself back at the court anytime soon (unless it's to hang out and troll for cute cops)....but if I do, I'll know to leave everything but what I absolutely need in the car, and that if I am nice to the employees, they'll be nice to me. read more

Getting into the door of the court is more than a notion. Sometimes, the line is so long, people are waiting outside just to get into the revolving door. Once you get in, get ready for a mob of people waiting to go through the metal detectors. My advice is to leave everything at home or in your vehicle. Just take what's absolutely necessary -- your ID, registration, form of payment and/or whatever paperwork is necessary for your visit. Maybe a small pouch to hold it all. DO NOT take your phone in...save yourself the trip back out to your car. Also, don't take ANYthing that can be used as a weapon. Use your better judgment, folks. DO take a piece of reading material to kill time while you wait once inside. Anyway, the employees were relatively nice. You go into these places expecting everyone to have an attitude. This wasn't the case. My only gripe is the kiosk payment process. I attempted to use the kiosk to pay (after my business was taken care of) and after swiping my card, the kiosk indicated that my card was declined. I was nervous about this because I knew I had money on that card, so rather than continue to try at the kiosk, I went to a window. The gentleman swiped my card there, then went to his computer system to mark me as paid and noticed that the ticket had already been paid. So, the kiosk successfully took my payment, but told me the card was declined. So, I paid the court 2X :-( The gentleman was, however, quick to refund the payment he took. So, all was not lost, but that was quite the scare at first. I hope to not have to go back to court any time soon. read more

Bad news - I got a speeding ticket (deserved) and I didn't have my proof of insurance (dumb). Had to go to court and expected the worst. Every person I encountered there was courteous, professional, efficient and friendly. Ended up with a fine and zero points - a much better outcome that I expected. read more

So I've come to a revelation - these are real people, with real lives outside of their jobs at this court. I have grace for them, as they deal with a multitude of people (with a multitude of personalities) throughout the day. They're humans, doing a really REALLY tough job of dealing with people and their legal drama. I can give the attitudes a pass. My bigger issue is the professionalism in general of their system. I had a traffic violation that I decided to fight in court as opposed to just giving them money for something I felt I didn't need to. Mind you, I got the ticket in June, and they didn't put it in the system until late July. I drove two hours for a 10 minute pre-hearing in mid-August, doubled back the next week for the actual hearing, just for my officer not to be there. No notice, nothing. Not only did they NOT dismiss my case in the officer's absence, they forced me to reschedule. I get they look out for their own, but they don't really know how much of an inconvenience it is to play cat and mouse with them. Maybe they do, maybe they just pick until the point that you pay for your ticket anyway. All in all, I know that some of them really just want to do their job and go home. You can tell in the way (some of them) act really...but there's a level of responsibility on the court's part to make sure that they don't burden other people. Their phones seldom work, their online system is never really up to date, and fighting small cases? A headache. They have a reputation for this type of behavior, apparently. If you have a ticket and can afford to pay, save yourself the headache, lol. read more

The next chapter in the ongoing saga of my hack license. The final step was to obtain a traffic clearance, which I have never heard of, but nonetheless, I had to obtain. The process wasn't bad. Passing the ultra tight security was. I am one of those people who needs their backpack to carry everything from my Ipod to my camera. Who knows when there will be something worth taking a picture of? The first time I was there, I made the mistake of bringing my camera. Not allowed, even without the batteries. So the second time I came back, I made sure that the camera was home. The actual process of getting the clearance was simple, and for a few minutes I didn't believe I was in Detroit. It was a pleasure. The actual paperwork took a few minutes and when it was all over, I was $5 dollars lighter, but one step closer to that hack license I have been chasing. I hope that I never see them professionally. I mean, I don't like getting tickets, or paying fines. But if you have business with the court, you can be assured of getting in quickly and getting your business done in a timely manner. Shocking isn't it? read more

I'm not sure why it has such negative reviews, but everyone here was very helpful! Yes, there were long lines but that is to be expected. Everyone was very polite, efficient, and professional. I would agree with others that you only bring the bare minimum with you (your paperwork, ID, wallet, etc). A lot of people took longer to get through the doors because they brought way too much and couldn't take some of it in the building. As long as you bring the correct documents, and expect to wait in line, it really is a breeze! read more

Awful awful awful so I recently paid a ticket off online that was not in the system the whole 2020 which caused my license to be suspended the ticket was for 258 dollars it's just finally got in the system so I payed 158 and a couple of hours later 100 when I checked the systems it's says I still owe 58 dollars so when I call to see what's going on they say they only have 2 payments of 2 100 dollar payments which is not possible because I have the receipts that their system generated and emailed me on top of bank statements when I go to call the lady she was so mean rude and nasty when I told her the situation I can tell the lady was a older women by her tone but I'm just not understanding all the attitude when I'm just trying to get this matter resolved for the simple reason that 58 dollars is still causin my license to be suspended now what if I get pulled over and go to jail and have to pay unnecessary money for a ticket I already resolved PLEASE GO PAY YOUR TICKETS IN PERSON OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A GLITH IN THE SYSTEM AND A MEAN OLDER LADY READY TO BE RUDE!! read more

I understand rules are created, because incidents occur that create a demand for them. HOWEVER, there should be better communication regarding what is allowed and what isn't allowed within the court room. Pursuant to MCR 8.115(c) 1. Electronic communication devices must be turned off or set to silent mode prior to entering the courtroom. That is the policy. This court should be held accountable for this discrepancy in the laws the are enforcing. read more

had to park a mile away and then re-park my car 3 times because the first two meters I tried were broken... then had to walk back to the car and leave my cell phone etc in there since they don't allow them into the building... when I got inside to bring proof of insurance and registration I could not for the life of me find where I was supposed to take the proof to. there were two HUGE lines which were not well marked but one seemed to be for the cashier and one for I don't know what. I looked lost enough that someone came up and asked me what i needed then took me to a small back office with 4 cops in full uniform at desks... one of the cops stamped my ticket and signed it multiple stamps signatures dates etc.. then instructed me that he had canceled the ticket but there was a $25 cancelation fee I would wait in the long long line at the back and pay $25 I waited in that line for an hour and when I got to the front the cashier told me my ticket wasn't in the system yet and she went to look for it... I watched her go in the back office and socialize at other peoples desks then come back 5 mins later... told me to wait and she would call my name when the ticket had been entered... mind you this is a HUGE lobby area with 100+ people and 10+ cashiers so how am I going to hear her call my name? I stood really nearby so I wouldn't miss it... when she finally called me back up she had one of the two items she needed and I ended up waiting at the window another 10 mins before she would take my $25 cc payment. Flash forward 3 weeks and I get a Default Judgement card in the mail basically the card reads as though I never appeared with proof of insurance and registration and now they say I owe $225 and points go on my license. I have proof of my CC payment and a receipt so I am currently trying to call the court to see what I should do to have this reversed. I had to try 10 numbers and finally using this number (313)-965-2200 I was put on hold... I am still on hold and it has been 38:28 mins. I don't even know what to do now.. go back and wait in line for another hour to see another cashier that has not idea what she is doing I guess.... heaven help me. Okay Update.. finally took my call after 45 minutes and told me over the phone that she ASSURES me that it has been canceled and I should JUST IGNORE the card i got in the mail .. the card that says "Failure to Pay will result in the suspense of your driving privileges." and "Delinquent accounts may be referred to a collection agency or credit bureau" ... just ignore it ..its fine read more

I was not mad about the whole check in procedures. I would rather be safe and frisked than unsafe and not frisked. What pissed me off is that I received a ticket for no insurance. All I need to do was bring proof that I had insurance on the day I was ticketed, which I did but the judge i was supposed to see was absent for the day. New court date scheduled for November. But I am scheduled to go back to Houston this week, smh. read more
