I learned that the children's author Sherri…read moreDuskey Rinker, who happens to live in the suburbs, is doing story time events at several suburban bookstores to celebrate the release of her newest book. My daughter is a big fan of her Construction Site and Steam Train Dream Train series, so I was excited to bring her here for the event. We got here a little too early--about five minutes before they opened, and 35 minutes before story time--but I wanted to make sure we got a spot! The area where they hold story time was really large for an independent bookstore. After the story was over, the author personalized her signed books for the kids. I'm glad we went to this event because in addition to it being fun, we picked up several books and one of them has so quickly become a new favorite of my daughter's that she already can recite pages from it three days later. The bookstore is nice, and larger than I was expecting to be honest. It was fun to wander, even whilst trying to keep an eye on a toddler. They have various events, story time, fundraisers, and so on. I think it has the potential to be kind of a madhouse for some of their bigger events... it seemed a little unorganized getting folks in line for this signing and they don't really have a lot of space for folks to queue up so some people were cutting in front of folks so it might be kind of messy when there's a big event happening. But still, worth a stop if you like bookstores! There's lots of parking around on the street and even a municipal lot.

The staff here said hi as I entered and then gave me the freedom to browse. Anyway, it's a lovely little store with some really nice things. It's not just a clothing store, which I appreciate. They do have clothing, but when I was here most of the merchandise was non-clothing; books, toys, games, and so on. The prices weren't super out of line with other children's stores around. The clothing is more on the expensive end--they don't really seem to sell mid-range stuff here. But it's high quality children's clothing (but do check labels--I've been to some children's stores where dry clean is recommended and that's not something I can justify for children's clothing, though I do forget to check the labels). I stopped in to see if I could find something for my friend's son for his birthday, but didn't find something that jumped out on me at this trip. I am not in Northfield very often, so it's not a shop that would be a place that I would just pop by. But if you're looking for something special or a nice gift it would be a good place to take a look.

Tonight I finished my holiday shopping for my niece and picked up a couple of beautiful gifts. The kids section contains high-quality merchandise. My hubby was literally double-parked outside, and I thought I could just run in and out, but no way. I wanted to buy the entire collection! From adorable natural cotton baby clothes to books, to stuffed animals, to toys, you will not leave empty-handed. They have something for every budget, and I think the prices are spot on for the quality. I truly admit to being completely obsessed with an adorable owl stuffed animal. Sooooo cute! Now, the best part about this store? Well, aside from the well-curated merchandise, is the owner. She's a total sweetheart and helped me pick out the perfect gift. She also gift-wrapped it in a super cute burlap bag with my choice of tissue color and a tie. Thank you...thank you. I'm so happy to see that this store is around. I need to stop in more often. I haven't done much shopping in town since Shirise closed their doors earlier this year (RIP), but it's fabulous to have a store where you can quickly pop in for a housewarming gift or just a little something for visiting a new baby. In the few weeks BlackSheep has been open I've stopped in twice to purchase: a) a lovely candle for the host of dinner during the jewish holidays b) a lovey for a new baby visit (the "real" gift wasn't ready quite yet) And of course I can't forget the few times my pre-schooler has dragged me in there for "just a few pieces of candy."
