I'd already clocked the Usain Bolt installation outside the Council House and had heard rumours that other displays by Birmingham City Council's park team would be sprouting up and taking root all over the city to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics. However, the weightlifter here, made from entwined wicker like Bolt, doesn't relate to a celebrity athlete. In fact I would go as far to propose that the wicker figure is as androgynous as it is anonymous, standing on top of a plinth of a stunning range of yellow blooms. I noted chrysanthemums, but couldn't really tell what the other flowers were. They were as mysterious to me as the figure himself... or herself. Either way, by shunning an actual competitor, this clever display says something about the inclusiveness of the Games - how the beholder can project their own image onto this woven hero. read more
