This sculpture by Anthony Gormley is situated right at the top of New Street in the shadows of the Town Hall. Many hated it when it was first erected in 1993 - why would Birmingham want a wonky, rusty statue.
However, I have always really liked it. It is a great juxtaposition to the other, much older, statues in the area. The contrast of the dark red-brown metal against the sandstone of the buildings in Victoria Square highlights its simplistic form.
Officially named Iron: Man by the sculptor it is meant to represent the traditional Industrial Revolution skills honed in the area.
Many people now seem to miss this 20 foot piece of artwork but the next time you are walking though the square go and spend 5 minutes appreciating it. Gormley's "Angel of the North" is much celebrated and us Brummies should be proud of this unique piece. read more
