A E Housman is just one of many other famous people to have been born in and around Brum. As a pioneering poet, he certainly deserves recognition, and Bromsgrove high street marks his home town perfectly.
Stood in the centre of the high street, you'll find the man himself who looks as though he is hiking, although it isn't really clear exactly what he is meant to be doing. There's a plaque on the side of the statue, stating his name and profession, however it doesn't actually explain why the statue is posed this way. I think the statue could be better, and could represent Housman's scholar and talent much better than it currently does. After all, he has influenced many music composers, as well as represented both the Victorian and Edwardian eras through his work.
As a key figure and lecturer, Bromsgrove needs to celebrate the fact that Housman was born here, rather than erecting an unclear, generic statue of him; But at least this is here for now, even if it doesn't capture pedestrian's attentions. read more
