It's hard to reconcile an area of natural beauty with the ferocity of World War I. However, even Sutton Park was called upon to its duty of King and Country as this tablet erected in Sutton Park commemorates.
As an act of patriotism, the park was given freely to the UK government to use as it saw fit in 1914-18. As such, the local Warwickshire regiments received their training here before being shipped out to the continent to see action. The wounded also returned back here to convalesce. Lastly, troops from New Zealand occupied the Park prior to returning home following the end of the war.
As a piece of public art, the tablet is unremarkable at best. However, the story it tells is a truly fascinating one, adding to the layers of history that are so evident in these surroundings. read more
