If you want to experience the Irish Midlands this is the place to go; both my wife and I travel and we try and avoid the touristy areas, preferring instead to spend our time meeting new people, and this trip provided that. Being American, I seldom get to have a good talk about football, but Pat was happy to oblige here. He's also made sure that every time I see Archie Gray take the pitch I will think of Weirs.

They have carvery and sandwich bar, my husband had Lasagne and wasn't good, he couldn't even finish it, too much bullion in it and I had just a ham & cheese toast, my ones are better. ( so, don't go there for food, drinks only) They also have a beautiful beer garden, very colourful and flowery and loads of seats. Heard they have live music it's quite good. So, I do think this would be one of those good places to go for drinks with friends, probably a late bar.

The bar itself seems like an old man's bar, in fact it is full of old men usually. I fell in love with The Old Stand when I popped in there one wet and cold winters day while I was waiting for my wife to come in on the train. The fire was roaring and there was a cat wandering around. Myself being a cat person meant that the cat wandered over to me and jumped up on to my lap for a cuddle. When my wife got in I had her come meet me and we stayed for a drink. Next door is the off license where they have a wonderful collection of Whiskey and some good world beers. The heated and covered beer garden outside is quite big and attracts the younger crowd. There is one of those punching machines in there if you fancy a test of strength. I must try and get back some time and see what it's like these days. Unfortunately even though I only live 10 minutes drive away, it is over €20 each way in a taxi making it much cheaper to get the bus to Dublin for a night out.

This expansive restaurant and hotel is on the River Inny and the Royal Canal. there are walking & bike trails in all directions from here. We walked for 40 minutes before lunch. Very picturesque country village. Note: this was a group of 50+ visitors. But it was evident that this inn can ably handled large events. Great meal starting w/ creamed vegetable soup or beetroot salad. Then your choice sirloin of beef w/ Yorkshire pudding or baked darne of salmon. All served w/ three potato choices & other vegetables. Also a choice of two decadent desserts - apple crumble cream filled profiteroles. Yummy. Local music from some Farrell cousins during dessert. Open daily from 10am-1130pm.
