I didn't quite understand and then one day, I saw it. Just a few yards from my dorm room. It is like a liquor, supermarket and wal-mart all condensed into a compact corner convenient store. The only thing was that they couldn't quite understand me when I asked for 'aluminum foil' because you have to say 'aluminium.' When I would run out of vodka, luncheon meat, gravy granules, tea and crumpets, frozen pizzas for 99 pence, or even fried chicken to get me through the cold, grueling days of studying, this Spar came to the rescue, everytime. I only have fond memories of this lifesaver. Oh yea, and they have instant ramen and siracha sauce too! What a relief!

SPAR is the largest convenience shop on campus and offers competitive prices on campus. Although…read morestill more expensive than supermarkets or other places in town, you are paying for the convenience. It offers a much wider range of goods than the comparable LUSU shops. This often means that I walk from the other end of campus just to get a particular brand or item that I can't buy in the nearer LUSU shop (aka Central Stores). I hear the SPAR baguettes are amazing, but I've yet to try them.

The prices are slightly more than Asda or Aldi but better in some respects than Sainsburys or other supermarkets. Food is fresh and a longer sell by date than those equivalent meat, fish or fruit and veg perishable goods at ASDA. In terms of overall experience, this is best for special occasion shopping such As Christmas, Parties, or large varied non normal shops as well as regular shopping. You pay slightly more but the quality is there.

The fish always looks super fresh. I also love their pie counter - well I'm a northern lass, of course I love the pie counter! And the instore bread is always good. They do a fine range of deals and I always manage to pick something up on BOGOF And the cafe is great. Waits for tables and food can be long but that's because, for the price, it's worth hanging around.

My partner's card payment at the self-checkout didn't go through because of a system glitch, but we thought it had as there was no alarm and no barrier stopping us. As soon as we were told, we went back in and paid the £44 immediately. Instead of handling it calmly, the Scottish security guard stopped us outside in front of everyone, speaking harshly and making us feel like criminals. It was humiliating and completely unnecessary, especially since we had already resolved the issue. For context: I work at an accounting firm and my partner is an NHS hospital audiologist -- we certainly don't need £44 of Asda shopping, and in five years of coming here we've never had a problem. Asda should train their staff to treat customers with respect, not embarrassment.

According to the locals, this is a bigger store than the regular ones. If I get a chance to visit a regular store, I'll confirm, lol. This one does have 2 levels, and you can take the lift (elevator) or the escaltors escalators. The escalator going down wasn't working the times I've been, but just walk down anyway. They have cashiers for check out as well as self check-out lanes. Prices here are awesome! I'm a huge fan of their bakery bread and the snacks. Their sparkling water game is pretty strong, too. Don't be shocked if I check in here again, lol!

If you're around Liverpool, Tesco's of all versions are dotted around places: metro, local, express, superstore. If there are any more, you'll have to let me know! The Liverpool One branch of Superstore is not actually the most super I have come across in Liverpool as there is one in Litherland which is gargantuan in comparison. However, Liverpool One Tesco is certainly what the town needs. You still have plenty of choice here, a variety of sections such as deli, clothes and international foods to keep you adding more to your basket! I find this place more of a relaxing and enjoyable shopping experience as opposed to the Metro version by the big screen, because its more spacious and offers an abundance of products. The location isn't great if you're driving there as it'll cost you pounds to park somewhere nearby but certainly convenient when you have other chores to do around town.

Driving on the left hand side is not something to choose easily....I have only done it once before in 1982 in Jamaica and it was fine because I was incredibly young and the roads were less travelled back then but it's hard to change. When we arrived at the York train station we had some time to wait so Joe said " Go check out the Booths" I already knew this is a grocery store chain in England and had seen it before But I was blown away at this one and was surprised to find it at the Windermere train station. I spent a good 45 minutes in there and purchased many items for our next destination. Beautiful produce and it also had a whole bakery area and a area with pharmacy type items too. If you're self catering in the Lake District and are looking for quality well above your average Tesco Express, be sure to make the drive to Booths.
