Well I'm on for some bird action now. Nope I've not switched buses, I'm talking about the Owl Pub…read more Just out of Leeds in the Rodley area it's a nice little player. For a start it's a nice building and is done out well. The reason I like it though is because it's got quite a bit to offer. They are really doing their bit for the local and underground music scene and still have live gigs on most weekends. That has to be commended so I am. You'll get everything from blues to folk. Worth a punt even if the genre isn't essentially your thing. Next up the beer is good. Oh yes, we're talking good casks and local too. Fancy a sip from a Leeds, Skipton, Sheffield, York, Ossett or Saltaire brewer? Then no problemo, my amigo. You'll also find Tetley's and John Smiths too. Aint half bad lad. As for the grub, it's proper pub food here. We're talking roasts, burgers and lighter bites at lunch too. Never going to win prizes for originality but you've gotta love some pub food as it should be at times. Don't be fooled, this is a pub. It's not a bar but we like it for it.

At some point or other you can do all of these here and you'll always have the option of some great ales. Black Sheep is one of the regular ales which I rarely see past but there are normally 3 guest ales too. It can be very busy in the Vault when there's a game on but the bar is usually well staffed. The food is good, very traditional but good and there's plenty of room to sit down if you're eating.

Despite the challenges of planning something with hosts who were in the U.S., the Waterside made this dinner a night everyone will remember. It was the first time bringing together different strands of a family that literally came from around the world. Ian kept everything running perfectly. We met up earlier in the day to iron out a few details and then those of us hosting didn't have to worry about a thing. Paul Huddlestone is a world class chef who works with fresh, organic, Yorkshire ingredients to make a menu that is both local and international in flavors. We are a family who really enjoy good food -- with many avid cooks, including professional chefs -- and everyone loved the food. The wine selections were perfect. And the prices were reasonable too, which was also a factor selecting the Waterside as a place for the dinner. They worked with us to please the tastes of everyone. Despite having a larger group, the selections were customized. The staff were all so warm and friendly. Chef Paul even surprised us with a lovely amuse bouche for our sparkling wine toast at the start of the meal. By dessert there were many more toasts thanks to a dinner that made us now one family. I have attached some photos just to show how happy we all were -- and the good food and relaxed atmosphere made that possible. If you want to have a dinner with some world class food that is firmly rooted in local cuisine, you should dine here. In addition, if you are planning a larger special occasion dinner: I cannot recommend the Waterside highly enough.

Simple as that. The building is out of this world. It's a grand affair and dates back to the mid to late nineteenth century. You'll be impressed as soon as you see it from the outside. That's always a good start. Once you're in, it doesn't disappoint. I'm in love with the huge roaring real fire and could quite happily stay there for hours on end. The service is fantastic too and it's a great atmosphere in a beautiful building. As for the food, well it's good old decent stuff and the price is more than reasonable. I wouldn't say it's out of this world, unlike the location, but that's mainly because it belongs to a chain. You've got real ales to sink into as well and a fab wine list. You know I love my wine and this doesn't disappoint. All in all this is one pub that you really must get to. Is that clear enough for you. Brilliant.

That was a good few years ago though. However, THIS time... the log fire was perfect to warm Ma W's bones and the whole atmosphere was lovely. I've knocked a star off because their food is quite pricey for pub dinners and when i asked whether their apple was homemade, a resounding "no" was heard... is any of it not shop bought? "ummm.... the crumble". ok. i'll have that. It was ok. mine is better. It's worth looking on their website as they do have offers 241s etc and I joined their mailing list and got a free glass of wine ahem 10minutemail.com ahem
