The first time I went to the bakery I didn't know the routine, but I had another customer show me - when you walk in to the right is a rack that has round aluminum trays and tongs. You take a tray and tongs, and then go to the clear display shelves along the walls and to the baking racks in the middle of the bakery to get your pastries, breads, cookies, churros and so much more. All the pastries, breads, etc, are freshly baked and some of our favorites are the custard filled horns, the rice pudding turnovers (it sounds strange but it is delicious), the strawberry filled churros, and the the pecan muffins. The absolutely best is their tres leches cakes, they are available by the slice or as a cake in two different sizes. You can get them with fresh strawberries and other fruit. Not only are their tres leches cakes beautiful, but it is truly the best cake I have every eaten. This is now our go to place for all celebration cakes. If you like flan, you will love their flan cups that are available in a glass display case in the middle of the store, yummy! They are also known for their freshly made tamales, we tried the red ones last week and they were delicious, looking forward to trying the green ones next time. The staff are very nice and helpful, and the prices are very reasonable. This is a must for anyone who loves good pastries , cakes and breads.

Being that Fox Lake is a population of merely 10k, this seems to be a popular place to hangout, especially when the weather is nice enough to permit outdoor seating around the corner. There was quite a line for a Thursday afternoon and the staff seemed a little swamped (and therefore were moving a pinch slow), but they were keeping their cool and maintained a pleasant attitude to all of their customers. Disappointing Visit After Ownership Change We were really looking forward to stopping by The Village Bakery in Fox Lake, but unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The new owners have remodeled the space, but it lacks the charm and warmth it once had. We purchased six items and spent nearly $16, which wouldn't be an issue if the quality matched the price--but it didn't. Every pastry and donut we tried was dry, almost stale. The fillings didn't taste homemade at all--more like they came from a can. The cherry Danish, which used to be a weekend favorite, had no real cherry pieces--just a sugary red gel. This used to be a regular and beloved stop for us, but sadly, it no longer lives up to the standard set by the previous owners. Hoping they take the feedback to heart and bring back the quality and care that made this place special. read more

As I've said, a huge disappointment. The new owners obviously are putting their own spin on the business, but, unfortunately, it's a downhill spin. They have failed the first test of taking over a business - don't change what works! I'll not be back, no matter how much the new owners plead for another chance. They've already lost me forever.
