I found Bronx Jiu Jitsu on Instagram after looking for some jiu jitsu training in the Bronx. Though…read moreI train mainly in Westchester I decided to come to a seminar hosted here and had a wonderful time. Bronx Jiu Jitsu is so professional, respectful, welcoming and supportive of all jiu jitsu practitioners. Being new to the sport I was anxious about being in a training facility with high level and high ranked practitioners. The people who work and train here are nothing but kind hearted and welcoming. I have done drop ins and trained in other gyms like the UFC Gym in White Plains and was unfortunately not met with the same level of respect and integrity. This gym is all about giving you the tools and skills you need to be successful. This is the type of facility that produces competent fighters and practitioners of the sport. I will be returning should they host any more seminars or events.

I'll start the review off by stating that I love Bronx Jiu Jitsu and if you live/work in the area…read moreand are considering trying it...you definitely should. In the 4 or so years before walking into BXJJ in August 2018 I had taken somewhere between 5 and 10 jiu-jitsu classes at about 4 different locations between DC and NY. Despite feeling like this was something I really wanted to do, I was never able to find the right place until BXJJ. This review is going to be broken down into what I feel are the relevant aspects of what makes this place special: COST: You will not find a better bang for your buck in terms of cost per class than this. Jiu-jitsu can be an expensive pursuit, especially if/when you really get into it (tournament fees, gis, rash guards, special seminars, etc.) so it's a huge benefit to take classes at a gym that never makes you feel like you're being price gouged. That applies to both the regular membership rates as well as the really, really fantastic introductory month specials. ATMOSPHERE: One of the issues I had with the previous places I tried to take jiu-jitsu classes was the stiff atmosphere. Yes, martial arts is serious business, but I'm also a firm believer in occasionally laughing. You'll find that everyone from the instructors to the students is more than willing to laugh at themselves and each other and that makes it an easy place to be a newcomer and ask questions. At the same time, it is also a really welcoming place where many of the people you meet take tons of classes there and, as a result, are totally comfortable helping you out one on one when something that is taught in class goes over your head. TEACHING: Phenomenal. One of the things that I most appreciate is that you never feel like you are part of a jiu-jitsu factory. Instructors take the time to learn your name/about you and they take care in observing everyone when it's time to roll so that you get personalized/actionable feedback. I can credit so much of my progress not just to what we are learning within the structure of the 1 hour class, but to the time instructors willingly take to break stuff down with me after class (related, it helps that they try not to pile classes on top of one another back to back to back so there is room for that). FACILITIES: The mats/training area does not stink. This might seem like a little thing, but...go to enough jiu jitsu gyms and trust me you will appreciate this.

Who would've thought that a child of then 5 would have such a rough year for their first real school experience with bullying. My son did, and it was really affecting his behavior in school and then eventually at home. I knew that he needed a positive place to release the stress a young 5 year old can feel. Within 3 months I've noticed such a big change in his behavior, he was walking around with a smile and less aggravated to attend school. He is in his 8th month this December and in first grade now and I no longer pick up an angry child from school. He is more confident, self assured and although it has gotten tougher for him he has stuck it through and made some friends he can hopefully build long lasting relationships with. What makes this place great besides the beautiful space and well kept dojo and bathrooms are the Senseis. Both Sensei Luis and Sensei Rahul are amazing with the kids. Disciple, structure and respect will be learned here and they demand it. They are serious and tough on the young ones, pushing them to their full potential. And on the other hand they are very playful and loving and give the kids a break with occasional games when they are deserving. The children really show interest to be here, they are ready in line and excited. I have seen some amazing students that they have molded in this dojo and only hope that Noel will also follow their footsteps. Glad to be apart of the BX Martial Arts family. I truly am grateful for my sons Senseis and have an immense amount of respect and love for what they do for our children. Keep it up!

So far, we're about halfway through and Rene has been awesome! Our lesson are semi-private (we both take them at the same time) and we both get a great workout as well as good instruction. During our first session, we got there early to fill out some paperwork and discuss with Rene, what it was that we were looking for. We did a good warm-up, went over the punches and got our workout in. We were both sweating like crazy and it felt good. By the end, we decided to incorporate more of a kickboxing routine to our following sessions and it's been amazing. Rene modified some of what he shows us for me due to my diactisis rectii, from my last pregnancy, and he also gave us workout and nutritional tips to try out at home that woudl continue our progress during the days we don't have a session. This is a small neighborhood dojo that has everything you need for a good workout. There is steet parking available and the price is very reasonable compared to other MMA style places that gouge you. I recommend grabbing a friend and committing to a 10 class program with Rene. You definitely won't regret it.

My…read moreson started training when he was younger, and now at 13, the growth we've seen in him has been truly remarkable--not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Through consistent training, he has developed strong confidence, improved athleticism, and a sense of discipline that carries into all areas of his life. He carries himself differently now--head held high, focused, and respectful. What stands out most is how he's grown into a leader among his peers. He's well-liked, commands respect in a positive way, and has built meaningful friendships within the school. The instructors here don't just teach martial arts--they instill values like perseverance, accountability, and respect. They genuinely care about each student's progress and take the time to mentor them both on and off the mat. If you're a parent considering this school, I can't recommend it enough. The benefits go far beyond learning kung fu--it's about building character and confidence that lasts a lifetime. Like anything worthwhile, the key is consistency. The students who show up, stay committed, and take their training seriously are the ones who truly thrive. This school is a special place, and I hope more families take the opportunity to be part of it. Lole T
