Huge WOW factor from dawn to dusk!

No short review can do justice to the exquisite views at the aptly named View Hotel and adjacent campground and cabins! The minute we walked up to our premium cabin, we were thrilled beyond words and felt at one with nature and the sweeping Monument Valley vistas. The cabins have been located with care, each directly facing the Mittens and valley. Adding to the charm, there are wooden privacy screens on the side ends of each porch, so you're shielded from neighboring cabins and night lights that might otherwise obscure views of the gorgeous night sky. We took a fantastic guided tour and drive of the loop but also found it hard to leave our perfect little cabin, which was well designed in every way -- it felt like one of the smartly appointed "tiny houses" you'd see on HGTV but with the unbeatable views of Monument Valley added in. The porch was the perfect place to enjoy the panorama to the fullest, gleaming dawn to starry late night, but during monsoon storms, it's also easy to sit right at the cabin's main window and still savor the exceptional scenery. The restaurant at the hotel offers carryout from both the main menu and local vendor Linda's, so eating inside your own room can be a wonderful option. The premium cabins, situated front-row, are worth every penny, but the units behind are well tiered, with parking behind each set of cabins, to prevent cars from obstructing the view, and there's easy access to the hike trail around the Mittens. Absolutely outstanding!

View from inside of the cabin looking out to the front porch. Wind was up so a little hazy today.

This is a review of the cabin with the bunk beds. The kids loved the bunk beds. The AC kept the cabin cool even in 110 degree heat. The cabin itself is not luxurious in any way, but they appeared almost brand new and everything worked great. There were no insects inside or any big problems. The fridge kept the drinks plenty cold. The location is what you are paying for and it's spectacular. For parents, be warned the bunk beds are right outside the bed room door. Luckily the AC's are noisy! And be warned you need to pay the tribal fee at the gate every day you come back in which is pretty annoying.

The View Campground has the most incredible view (as it should with a name like "The View.") Overall I had an incredible stay at this campsite. The campgrounds are situated a little bit away from the hotel, but a short walk provides you with some hotel type of services (wifi, store, restaurant, etc.) The check-in process was easy. They give you a map, you find a site, and then you go back to the office to finish up the check-in process. Some of the sites are uneven due to the blowing wind. You are camping essentially on sand dunes (You will get sand in everything. Standard tent stakes may not hold in the fine sand.) Additionally, there is not a single bit of shade in the campground (I brought a tarp and made my own shaded area.) Do not come to this campground expecting privacy or seclusion. You will get neither. Each of the 30 sites are very close to each other. In some places within 15-20 feet. I had site 25 (furthest down along the "do not camp beyond this point" sign.) This site allowed for a completely unobstructed view of the buttes with no one in front of me. The bathrooms are locked with a keycode and were VERY clean. In the mens room there were 3 showers, a toilet, a urinal, and 2 sinks. Over the entire weekend, the bathrooms were very clean. The toilets were flushable toilets. The 17 mile Monument Valley loop is right there as well as (1 of the 2) hikes you can do without a guide, the Wildcat Trail (a nice, short 3.8 mile loop around the West Mitten. It's not too strenuous except the climb back out in the loose, find sand. For anyone in an RV, it didn't look like the best spot. The RVs were essentially in a parking lot above all the campsites. No hookups, no electric, but there did seem to be a picnic table. The campsites had no tables and fires are not allowed. It seems like they may hold some campsites. I checked their website last week and it said there was no availability for this weekend, and upon staying for 2 nights there were definitely open campsites. It seems like you may be able to go there day off and find a spot. Perhaps I was lucky, but even with the close proximity of other campers, everyone was very courteous and there were no obnoxious people like other popular, established campsites. Other campers were quiet at night and in the morning. While I would probably not come back again (on my own), I would eagerly encourage others to definitely check it out. You're probably not going to find a campsite (especially a car camping site) with such an amazing view!!! Check out my video here: https://youtu.be/4jUJOVrPEC0

Tiny bathrooms. The spots all over are moths. They were everywhere in the bathroom.

*BEWARE!!!* We reserved a campsite for the night. All site are dry sites but we figured we would pay the inflated rate because the view of the stars is supposedly the best from here. It wasn't until I received my confirmation email that I was notified of a Navajo Tribal fee that was not included in the reservation. We discovered upon arrival that you are changed a fee to get to the campground area. $20 for 1-4 people $6 for each additional person or $35 for groups of 6 or more (see attached picture) this was in addition to the inflated site rate!!! I was mad to say the least! The guy up front told us that we were the last ones to check in so all he had left was a spot with a view of the cabins. After talking to our neighbors we found out that they told them the same thing. There are plenty of empty spots up by the office open that have a great view of the valley. He totally played us! The bathrooms are tiny! There are 3 shower stalls and 2 toilet stalls but only room for 2 - 3 people in the common area between them. The bathroom stall doors do not lock so be sure you have someone stand guard for you. I had multiple people try to open the door while I was using the toilet. They are full doors not stalls so you can't look for feet under the door to check if someone is in there. There are jeep tours available but they charge $80 a person including babies. Even if they sit in your lap. Bottom line, we felt taken advantage of and ripped off. I will not stay here again and recommend the same to others. We wish we had driven just out of the reservation and stayed at one of the campgrounds there. The view was not worth the price we saw just as much from the car during our drive if not better.

    Inside the cabin

Amazing!!! You can't beat the view. We stayed in a cabin which had a queen size bed in the back, a set of bunk beds for the kids, and a sleeper sofa big enough for 2 in the front room with a kitchen. It even had free WiFi which was a pleasant surprise. Only drawback is that it can be a bit pricey, but you really can't get any better!!!

Easy pull in, picnic table, & the most quiet campground in the area. Fantastic views that will make your stay truly memorable. The price is $20 bucks, but the views make it priceless. If we ever come through this area this will be the only place we will consider. The entrance road is a little rough, but if you take your time it is nothing to drive in. Sites are far apart & mostly level. All dirt sites, but well packed. Owner owns most of the land around the campground 250ac so he is ok with you hiking all of it as long as you stay away from his family's homes. He was very informative on things to do in area. Easy drive to Monument Valley, Bears Ears, Natural Bruges, Gooseneck State park, too many things to post here. This is a 1st come gets the sites only, no reservations. We were there in Oct., pulled in had the Campground to ourselves. The four days we were there we saw only 5 other campers. The sunrise & sunsets are to die for. There is one portable potty on site, clean, but we didn't use it. People not in RV's were. Campfires were allowed & you can bring your own wood. Do not harm local junipers or gather wood. Some of my pics show the formation that is the camps name sake. Our dogs loved the freedom of running around when there were no others on site. **there are reservation dogs roaming around & livestock, so please be respectful to others **everything you bring in you MUST pack out **some sites will accommodate large RVs ours was 31ft. **the stars are amazing, even seeing the Milky Way, no light pollution. **there is NO internet, cable, & our phone service was sketchy Owner or family member will come to take your money, there are no pay stations. You will love this campground due to views, peacefulness, distance from others, just a total immersion into the environment.

As some background, we're experienced campers and well traveled. We were ultimately so disappointed with the Mustang Valley Campground that we left and did not end up spending the night. The photos on HipCamp looked great and we read the reviews about the site being close to the road but figured we'd give the campground a try. Mark, the campground host, was nice enough and responsive via text messages. However the campground had the aesthetic of squatting along the roadside in tents. The showers and outhouse were ramshackle shed-like structures with only partial doors and minimal privacy. The tents available weren't well maintained and had vents/doors broken. One of the Mark's two dogs was aggressive with ours (a 10 lb Boston Terrier puppy kept on leash at all times) and it was apparent his dogs just roamed the site. Yes, it's right near Monument Valley and the view of the formations are beautiful. Yes, Mark seems like a nice person minus the after drama I'll go into below. However would not recommend this campground. We'd recommend you support other Navajo owned businesses and stay elsewhere. As a follow up, over the past year I've had to deal twice with Mark writing responses to my review on HipCamp filled with lies. Calling us difficult or demanding and accusing our dog of being off leash and terrorizing children. None of which are true. We made a reservation that included a tent and the tents were not in good condition. We were told his dogs wouldn't be roaming and they were. One of which was not friendly to our puppy who was kept on-leash at all times. We didn't feel safe or comfortable here as two women. HipCamp ultimately refunded our camping fee after I spoke with a representative after the first issue with false comments. We would personally not recommend this campground to anyone.

We arrived at 4:51pm and were told that because we were late, the host, Mark, had already left the property to run errands. I asked why he had not waited just a bit longer since we *had* notified them of our arrival and we were only a matter of 6 minutes late. The attendant gave us a obnoxious response of "He's doing laundry. Have you ever done laundry before? Usually people like clean sheets." We went to a nearby restaurant (Goulding's, a lovely little inn with a beautiful view and decent food) to wait and after about a half hour we received notice that Mark had returned to the campground. Our food had just been brought to the table so I asked the attendant if she could provide the coordinates for the Hogan we had booked so that we could meet Mark there once we were finished with our meal. I received a scathing response back saying that it would be better if I just cancelled the reservation. She said that I was trying to break their established rules by asking to go to the Hogan on our own (this was incorrect, since I had asked to meet Mark there -- not go there on our own. The attendant seemed too irate to notice the difference.) At this point, of course, we did not feel safe continuing with a reservation at a place where we were clearly unwelcome so we collected our refund and continued on to our next destination.

I've traversed that blacktop so many times and yet I missed the obvious: the sign for the Sand Island campground and petroglyphs. This campground is a great base for exploring the region and the adjacent boat launch area that hugs the San Juan River makes it even more pleasant. Of course, what lured me here is the large 300-foot long sandstone panel of petroglyphs that overlooks the campground. Thankfully protected by a fence, the images here are in very good condition with none of the bullet holes and routine vandalism that too often affects other sites. Over 1,000 images here date from 3000 BCE to AD 300 and are the result of many peoples: Ute, Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, Pueblo, and European ancestry, too. Some of the etched images no longer contrast well against the surface because desert varnish -- the dark mineral coating that coats stone over time -- has seeped into the crevices of the rock art. The nuanced surface simply attests to the age of these petroglyphs. Spend a night camping at Sand Island and you'll literally have a front row seat to ancient history.
