This family owned vegan restaurant was across the street from our rental when we visited Harrisburg earlier this month. Super friendly staff, very helpful sign in the shop telling us about different allergens that can be left out of our orders. I ordered the tofu banh mi sandwich. It was big enough for leftovers and delicious in both flavor and texture. My daughters ordered the eggplant Reuben and cheesesteak sub and declared them very flavorful. We took our orders to go and they stayed hot and fresh. If we lived in the area, we would definitely be back! read more

I'll start by saying that this review is just for the spot and the beer. I have no issues with vegan cuisine, just went there to sample the beers. Veg Hunter is a nice space on N 2nd Street, a few blocks north of the main restaurant district in downtown Harrisburg. The first floor has a service bar and small seating area, with a more conventional bar and seating on the second floor. Tables outside, too, when weather permits. The staff was very helpful and friendly, and very honest that beers take a little longer because they are a nano-brewery so they are not using a high powered tap system. I ordered a flight (pictured) for a sampling of styles The beers were OK, not spectacular. To me, that's not unsurprising at a nanobrewery (which can be hit or miss). This place is so good that we rerouted our drive from Massachusetts to Maryland to make sure we hit Harrisburg and luckily we got there at around dinner time and hungry. This was the longer route but I have no regrets as The Vegetable Hunter did not disappoint. For this second visit we got the Peruvian Potatoes (my wife's fave) and loaded sweet fries as apps. Also ordered the mushroom soup (my favorite), Channa Masala, Banh Mi sandwich. All great. It is rare that we go to a place twice and everybody leaves super happy with all of their choices. Maybe next time one appetizer will be just meh? I really hate to write such a negative review, but here's just a PSA to everyone that the food here is so bland, unappealing, and a big waste of your money. I love supporting local vegan restaurants so I was excited to try this place. When we got there they said they were out of the Mac and cheese and the fried tofu. While I was disappointed and looking forward to the mac and cheese I settled on getting the Philly cheesesteak (which was recommended to me by the server). My friend ordered the Chana Masala bowl. When our food came out I just stared at the Philly cheesesteak because it looked unappetizing and was questioning my decision. I finally took a bite and it was just so mehhh and it was mostly bread. The Chana Masala bowl had rice that was probably 2 days old and this white mayonnaise on top that didn't match the flavor profile at all. My friend and I didn't know what to do because there is no service. We wanted to grab a quick bite because we were traveling but we were left with confusion and disappointment by our meal. Don't sleep on this place. I travel a lot for work and being vegan makes finding good vegan food while traveling a scavenger hunt. My work gifted me a gift card for this place so I came down on my day off to check it out. Right away the vibes of the place are great. Walking through the door and I'm immediately overwhelmed by the amazing smells. Everything smells delicious. I order the cheese steak, Mac and cheese, a burger, and 2 sides of chickpea salad. Everything was made in house, and everything was delicious. I'm sitting here at home with the last side of chickpea salad trying to reverse engineer this stuff so I can live off of it. I've been to a lot of vegan spots all over the country. This place is high up on my list, everything had seasoning and flavor, you could taste the pride in the food, there are so many places that make vegan food but it lacks flavor and spice. We stopped at The Vegetable Hunter in Harrisburg for lunch during a road trip from Jersey to Pittsburgh. My husband is vegetarian, so I found this place online and made it a pit stop for us. We found metered parking near one of the government buildings nearby, maybe two blocks away or so. When we got there, we were the only patrons at the time and had the place to ourselves. We got a table on the first floor. Food was really good - I had a banh mi sandwich and vegan mac and cheese; he had the Israeli sandwich. It has interesting décor and the bathroom was nice. We've ordered delivery from here several times and each time has been worse then the time before. As a vegan I was super excited to find a vegan restaurant and couldn't wait to order from there but the food is consistently bad. The cupcakes used to be worth the ridiculously high price at least but the last time we received them they were half the normal size and stale. Their tofu sandwiches are just breaded wet tofu With little flavor except for whatever sauce they pour over it. The burger I received was edible except the cheese is flavorless and I had to eat it with a knife and fork due to it being so soggy. The side of chickpeas that comes with the burger is just weird tasting. We've given them several chances but that was the last chance. read more

The cashier said I could select "any side" with my Bahn Mi (tofu sandwich), failing to warn that one choice had an upcharge of $2 (even though it was only $1 more in the sides menu). After switching to a choice without an upcharge, I noticed that the sandwich and coffee were EACH being charged at $1 higher than menu prices. At first he denied it, claiming it was tax until I showed that tax was shown separately. Then he admitted the prices were higher, but claimed he couldn't honor the listed menu prices. I asked him to call his manager to approve honoring the menu, but he said he didn't know how to reach them. FFS, if management is going to be unreachable, they need to give employees agency to make honorable decisions for the good of the business! He kept saying it wasn't his fault. I agree, but what difference does that make?!? He kept saying, "Don't worry, everything will be fixed", but he meant only that future customers would not experience my problems, not that he had ANY intention or agency to fix my problems right then and there. When I warned the cashier that I would be posting a negative review, he replied that they were accustomed to getting bad reviews. Wut?!? Was this guy trained at all in customer relations? I gave up and paid the fraudulent extra $2, partly with a $10 gift card and the remainder in with a $20 bill. Then I caught the cashier shortchanging me by $1. The receipt didn't even show the cash part of my payment in full! When I tasted my latte, it was icky sweet -- he failed to use UNSWEETENED vegan milk! At least it was good once he remade it correctly. The sandwich itself was soggy with way too much mayo. The kale salad was uninspired but fresh. Not only did this restaurant lose me as a future customer, I warned at least 10 of my fellow convention attendees to avoid this place. For the owners who were asleep in their freshman business classes, the bottom line is that their restaurant's attempt to cheat me out of a couple of bucks resulted in their losing HUNDREDS in revenue today and who knows how much more in the future because, evidently, they don't think bad reviews can be avoided. This bad review could have been avoided by simply acting honorable. read more

While at another brewery I searched for breweries in walking distance of my location (because I wasn't paying for parking twice) and found this spot. I'm not vegan and very picky when it comes to my vegetables so the food wasn't for me but I'm not holding that against them. I got the Mac & Cheese with a Kale Salad. The beer is good though. Picked up a pint glass for the collection. The reason it lost a star for me was it was an extremely hot day outside and there was no AC. We were visiting family in PA, two of us are dairy intolerant and we looked for some Vegan options. We were thrilled to find this delightful Vegan cafe and Micro Brewery! The food was made with love and attention to detail. I had the Maple Dijon Chicken Salad - bright and savory, so delicious and fresh! All of our dishes had some kale salad - delicate leaves, no heavy stems, perfect garlic dressing. One of our family members had the Pulled Pork BBQ Sand which was a hefty size with a Mushroom Soup. All incredibly good. Another had the BBQ Mac & Cheese Chicken Sandwich, great textures all around + creamy mac n cheese with no dairy, pure heaven! The drinks were stellar! - Oat Milk Stout - nice aroma, full body (went great w pulled pork and mushroom soup) - Strawberry Seltzer - with real fruit! - Lavender Kombucha - subtle herbal notes with traditional Kombucha. It would be much more palatable if the spice could be served on the side. Spice can't be removed from the pre prepared food, but it could be added if desired. I stopped off here on a road trip and it was worth the detour. I got the vegan Bahn mi and the chikn salad. Both were good; the Bahn mi had a decent spice level thanks to the jalapeños. The tofu was prepared well and seasoned with warm spices, and if I have one critique it's that there could have been more in the sandwich. I've been here on two separate occasions and neither time was I disappointed. I came in from out of town with some friends and was greeted with the same warm and welcoming atmosphere as we had received nearly a year ago from the owner and his staff on a slow Friday afternoon. The staff are incredibly friendly and polite, offering assistance and opinions about anything on the menu. The first time around we grabbed a flight each and were stunned by the unique flavor combinations we encountered and the stability of their more traditional beers. Returning a year later, we were till thoroughly impressed by the full flavor of traditional styles, but we sadly caught them at a less creative time (so visit often!). My friends snagged the Israeli pita pocket while I settled on some nachos. These are not for the faint of heart. Portions here beg for leftovers, so come hungry. My friends described the pita as having great flavor and texture, packed into every nook and cranny of a pita. As for my nachos, the seemingly odd introduction of hummus alongside salsa, vegan cheese, guac, and black beans not only complimented well, but enhanced the overall dish. We stopped here on our drive from Pennsylvania back to Ohio. I'm gluten free and would rather not eat meat. He wasn't hungry but wanted a beer. This place fulfilled both of our desires. The dishes that I was most excited about were not available without gluten but beggers can't be choosers. I'm not sure what I had. Possibly the super food bowl. The gentleman behind the counter said it was the most popular dish they had. And for good reason. It was delicious! I might have wanted something else but was glad to have what I ended up with. I also had some strawberry fizzy drink that was delightful. My boyfriend had a beer. I guess they just tapped the keg and have to let it sit or something? And it comes out super strong if you don't. The guy who brought it to our table told us this and he was right. But the guy working there brought him out a flight of beers to replace the problem beer. They brew them there which we thought was pretty cool. Some of the beers my boyfriend loved. I think one or two not as much but he was really excited to try them and I thought that was excellent customer service. Everyone wore masks inside. It felt as safe as things can right now. The food is good but needs just a little work. We split the buffalo chick'n sandwich and the cheese steak along with a side of Mac & cheese and an oatmeal raisin cookie. The buffalo sandwich was very good. I've never seen tofu fried in such a way that it outwardly looks just like chicken. The cheese steak was very messy and needed more meat. The Mac & cheese flavor was awesome but the noodles were pretty mushy. The oatmeal raisin cookie was amazing! We ended up with two since they were stuck together due to the heat/humidity in the front section of the restaurant. The service was kind and helpful, cutting our cheesesteak for us when my husband asked to make it easier to split. Almost forgot! We also had the chickpea salad and kale salad sides. The chickpea salad was ok, the kale salad was just kale with some kind of light dressing. The kale wasn't in the best shape so I didn't each much of it. Again, we did enjoy our meal but there are just a few tweaks that could make this place really great. This is some tactical advice for management. Please ask your employees to refrain from wearing headphones while on the job taking orders at the register. Our order was taken incorrectly. Please don't burden customers with tipping prior to being served. Our meal took a long time to come out and, when it did, it was placed on our table in a haste without utensils. The server, who still had headphones on, didn't ask if there was anything else we needed. Not then, and not once while we dined. I regretted giving and advanced tip. When we were done, the kids wanted a dessert. We stood by the dessert display for a few minutes waiting for service, but nobody asked, so we left. Regarding the food, it was mediocre. The classic burger bun was toasted and hard as a rock. The mac and cheez was too mushy. My kids wouldn't eat it. The taco bowl was a hodgepodge of textures and mismatched flavors. I couldn't get through more than 5 bites. I love to support vegan restaurants when I travel but things need to be improved here if they want to keep folks' business. One of the worst experiences I have ever had. Being vegetarian we stopped by here based on the reviews and ordered Vegan Nachos, Chana Masala bowl, BBQ Mac & Cheese sandwich, Nacho Hot Dog along with berry tea's. The place was not really busy, but we did not get our food for an hour plus. When we started getting order, the Nacho Hot Dog was rock hard and I could not even bite into it. The nacho's never came. The chana masala bowl was ok. The bbq Mac & Cheese was undercooked as well. After almost 1.5 hrs waiting for our order and getting only partially served, we finally got fed up and asked them to cancel the rest of the order and walked out. It was a load of food. I went to get a box for my leftovers and asked about my Peruvian potatoes, the waitress was like, you ordered one of those as well? Yep I sure did. About ten minutes later it came out. I got the potatoes to go. The blackberry lemonade, yuck. I was hoping for some fresh squeezed action because of the price. Instead got some chemical tasting lemonade with blackberry syrup. Hard pass. When I got home I tried the potatoes. They weren't cooked all the way through. They were still crunchy. Disappointing. So happy I finally found an affordable vegan option in Harrisburg. I was in town for work and came across this place on Yelp so I decided to give it a try. I was coming from Strawberry Square so it was a bit of a walk for a lunch break but I would not hesitate to come back when I'm not so pressed for time. I ordered the Israeli pita sandwich w/ beet salad. I ordered my meat-loving friend a 'crab cake' pita sandwich and chickpea salad. I also ordered their house passionfruit kombucha. The food and kombucha were divine! I was so impressed with everything and could tell each ingredient was well thought it and & freshly prepared. They truly care about the food they're putting out and it shows. My meat-eating friend was blown away with the food and has already made plans to go back again. I consider that a total win! Thanks Vegetable Hunter for helping to shift the mind of a meat eater that plant-based can taste great too! My only suggestion would be to offer more sustainable/eco-friendly packaging for the to-go food options. They are off to a great start with the cardboard food containers which I appreciated! I don't want to generalize for the vegan community, but i myself chose to go vegan for the animals/environment, which means I also like to be mindful of all of the waste/packaging I am using. Stopped in for takeout when in town for a family event. We ordered the eggplant Reuben and banh mi, both very good. The Reuben was a little soggy for eating in the car but would have been better had I been able to use a fork and knife. The banh mi was excellent with crunchy veg amid the flavorful tofu.
