I can't quite believe that nobody has reviewed this place yet, but there you are.
The V & V cafe has replaced the former Tapa Organic, although you would be hard-pressed to notice as the interior is pretty unchanged apart from a snazzy new counter and the removal of a table downstairs to make it a bit more roomy. Otherwise, it seems pretty much like the old place, although I don't know if it's the same management or a completely new owner. But they still sell artisanal bread and yummy cakes as well as the fair-trade coffee.
The food seems to have downgraded a bit though, and I found the menu somewhat lacklustre and uninspiring from somewhere that is trading on its veggie and vegan credentials. Lunch options seemed to be mainly soup and a sandwich or panini, with the "special" being a vegan curry.
I chose the soup and a roasted vegetables and hummus sandwich, and a long black of course. The soup came in a reasonably sized bowl, and the sandwich had salad and a wee dish of chick peas on the side. Mercifully, it was served on a plate and not the uber-trendy piece of slate that so many venues seem to favour these days.
It was OK, and the long black was equally OK, if not quite up to the standard of Tapa. And that about sums it up for me - it was OK. Not exceptional, not particularly outstanding.
There is a lot of competition in this stretch of Great Western Road, and they are going to have to try a bit harder and front a more creative menu to compete with the likes of Roots & Fruits, Papercup and so on. I hope they can rise to the challenge. read more
