The restaurant got its name from the olden days when merchants traveling through Wilson would use this area to display their products or "samples". We were staying at the Midland RR Hotel and wanted to try the restaurant as well. The room has a very historic look and feel. Due to its location in the basement and the lack of modern acoustics, it was a little on the noisy side. I was thrilled that the chef's daily special was Shepherds Pie. My Irish ancestory kicked in and I had the special. The Sample Room's take on Shepherd's Pie was excellent. I also had an appetizer of Gizapaco (their take on gazpacho) which was also quite good. My wife had the Reuben with fries which was also great. The service was good, the decor and atmosphere was historic and we had a great time. Would definitely stop here again.

Service slowed to a crawl, and we eventually learned that our waitress had been sent home by the manager even though the bar was packed on a Friday night. A young server, only two weeks into the job, was left to take over, and unfortunately, he had no idea what he was doing. Another waitress stopped by to help but admitted she usually works upstairs in the restaurant and didn't know the cocktail menu either. The shift in service quality from the first round of drinks to the second was very jarring. There was live music, but the sound system wasn't great, so it didn't add much to the atmosphere. We did order desserts from the upstairs restaurant, which were a nice finish, but by the end of the night it was clear the staff was overwhelmed. As we left, we even saw the manager outside looking exhausted, which made us feel bad for the whole team. Overall, while the drinks were solid and the JoJos worth trying, the experience was inconsistent and stressful. While in Wilson, we spotted the Midland Railroad Hotel and Restaurant and decided to arrange the itinerary for our next trip so we could spend the night in WIlson. So, we arrived late afternoon and got checked in. The hotel has been restored to what it was like around the 1920's but with full upgrades including fire sprinklers, air conditioning, etc. Our room was a bit on the small side (1920'ish) but was quite comfortable. The bed was very comfortable and we got a great night's sleep. The was a complimentary breakfast in the morning that consisted mostly of local bakery projects, meats and cheeses. If you looking for modern amenities or a full HOT breakfast, you should stick with the major hotel chains. BUT, if you're into history and histrorical restorations, this place can't be beat. We thoroughly enjoyed our night in Wilson at the Midland Railroad Hotel and Restaurant.
