The last time he bought new sneakers was... 2010. I am not making that up. That means his current pair could legally be classified as antiques. Recently we went to a Tai Chi class together, and this man -- who otherwise considers himself quite stylish -- showed up in CROCS. I briefly considered pretending I did not know him. The very next day he said, "Do we have time to go look for sneakers?" followed by, "Where does one even buy shoes around here?" Enter DSW, my hero. Not only did we find him a pair... we found two. Their selection is fantastic -- all the good brands, tons of styles, and prices that don't make your eye twitch. Men's, women's, kids', athletic, dress, boots, casual -- if your feet need it, they've got it. They even have enough socks to support a full-scale sock-puppet theater troupe. My only tiny complaint? They could absolutely use more benches. One per aisle would be dreamy. Because when you're trying on shoes like it's your job, you need a place to sit. In a world where everything is online, I love that DSW is a real, fully stocked, walk-in store with fair prices and instant gratification. And yes -- there's a rewards program. You're not going to retire on it, but I did earn $5 off my next pair, which at today's gas prices may very well cover my round-trip there and back. We walked in with a shoe crisis. We walked out with happy feet and dignity restored. Five stars, no notes.

I've been to three of the Hot Topics in Buffalo, usually during Xmas-present-buying season. All are located inside the big shopping malls in town, and all are very similar. They have indifferent service, but sometimes friendly. They have all kind of wild products for goth looks, porn looks, rebel looks, punk looks, you name it. They actually have a lot of really fantastic stuff in store. They also have hot employees and extremely attractive customers. This particular location is inside the Galleria, and is a little hard to get to because it's such a big mall. But once you get there, you will find everything for your neon-red-hair and temp-tat and offensive-t-shirt needs. There's a lot of very fashionable stuff in here too, and it's a very underrated store. If it had Acne Meds, then it'd be Spot Topic, but it's not. Actually is Spot Coffee for people with Acne?

I looked up ahead of time to see if there was a location nearby and I was in luck. This is one of the shops inside the fashion outlets that do not have the same hours as the mall itself. They are one store that opens before the mall does and, from what I was told, one of the few that stays open after the closing times. I came in, and appeared to be the first customer of the day. They had a sale on the graphic tees. I grabbed two to get the deal and continued onto the clearance rack. I grabbed another shirt and headed to the registers. When I got to the register and she was a delight. She was very knowledgeable of the items they have in the store and about the general area. We chatted a bit about everything and anything. I even asked if there were any Columbia stores in the area I was heading to next. It was a refreshing take on shopping.
