Saturday, August 11, 2007, was the 7th Annual UMS, billed as Denver's South by Southwest.
Passes cost $12/each, and were good for 12 hours of music. 70+ shows could be seen at Hi-Dive, Fancy Tiger, Kozo Fine Art Materials, Thrifty Stick, Indy Ink, Skylark Lounge, 3 Kings Tavern, Irish Rover, Sobo 151 and Sputnik.
I'm tempted to write two reviews for the showcase. But I'll combine them here:
The Before 8:00 pm Showcase: 5 stars. I caught the Wheel at 5 at Fancy Tiger, 'cause Nathaniel Rateliff + Carrie Beeder = Awesome! We sat on the floor of this little shop and saw a great performance. The audience was all absolutely silent during the songs and boisterously enthusiastic in their applause between them. I had a great time, catching every word passed between musicians, every facial expression, every nod. Surrounded by people who were also appreciating my friends' performance, I felt almost like I was a part of something, something much bigger than the Fancy Tiger. It was cool.
The After 9:00 pm Showcase: 2 stars. During Bela Karoli's performance at Fancy Tiger, there was a group of drunken women screaming continually for 20 minutes right outside. Continually. Why would you come to a music showcase if you're not going to listen to the music??
I wanted to catch Monofog at the Hi-Dive at 9:00 but I was turned away, it was too full. Instead I walked down to the Irish Rover to see a bit of Bad Weather California. We went back to the Hi-Dive for Laylights and then we wanted to go back to the Rover again for Gregory Alan Isakov.
This is when I got pissed. I looked around the Rover and suddenly realized that only 1/4 of us had UMS wristbands on. They were letting just anybody in, and these anybodies were all drunk frat guys pining for the Cubs loss. They were yelling and pushing each other around. They didn't even know anyone was playing live.
First off, that's what LoDo's for, guys. Second of all, I paid $12 to see a show and they totally ruined it. I had to leave because the volume was too crazy. It was total total bullshit. Boo to the Rover for letting them in. Boo boo boo. Maybe you made some money off the shots they drank but you pissed off a lot of other people, cool people who behave themselves and tip well.
I'm still mad about it. Next year I'll only attend shows during the daylight hours, before drunken assholes get in the mix and make it impossible to enjoy. read more
