The blueberry muffin with it was perfect - light and fluffy and with big juicy blueberries inside. The two coffees and the muffin were inexpensive which is always a great bonus. Bristol, Va. This bakery was our go to place for breakfast…read moreduring our week in Bristol. At first I was skeptical because of the long line that didn't seem to be moving. As it turns out there are a couple of ladies who really know how to run the show here. The line does move along efficiently and the lead lady communicates with the staff quite efficiently. There is also another lady who is a wizard of the espresso machine, it is a good thing they have her. On our first day there she came in late and this other lady took FOREVER to make our lattes, which turned out weak and milky. On follow up visits the wizard swiftly prepared our caffeinated beverages with great skill. The bean they use here has a good flavor but the espresso lacks boldness. The end product is just not rich enough, but it will do. The quiches are excellent, we always went with bacon Swiss or Loraine. They are a good size with a nice flakey crust, The granola yogurt parfaits are pretty good, the granola has a nice crunch to it. The yogurt was a bit sweet, it may be Chobani, but it went very well with the extra cup of berries you can purchase on the side. These berries by the way were fresh and beautiful. All the cookies we tried were great. They make a perfect affogato here, very addicting. I'm not sure if it's on the menu, but ask and you shall receive. The ice cream here is of a great quality, very creamy. The lemon berry tarts are way too sweet, they missed the boat on this one. I could not eat more than half of one. They did give us 15% off on the tarts because they were a couple days old. The candied pecans look good but the nuts are a bit rancid. All that sugar can't hide that.

In town "vacationing" the nearby places had never heard of seltzer waters I felt like a northern outta place. I knew as soon as I stepped in to this coffee place it felt more like home. Espresso cookies 10/10 I mean so good I ate it and then bought 2 more. If you're looking for a great coffee place this is your place. 100/100. Check this place out; seriously.

This cafe has a fascinating location surrounded by the remains of a coal mine and associated…read moreindustrial facilities which have been abandoned for some time but still look impressive. The cafe itself straddles a stream that was likely used for water power. They had pastry options and some diner style hot breakfast, but I wasn't blown away by these options and (correctly) anticipated that I might prefer my food options on the other side of the mountains. However, their drink selection was quite robust for a place in a pretty rural location. I ordered a coal dust which was a mix of white and dark chocolate; I was a bit miffed that the menu didn't make it clear that it was actually a coffee drink as it could just as well have been pure hot chocolate. However, the flavor combination was ultimately successful for me. Travelers should certainly consider stopping in this location to take a look around, and why not pick up a beverage?

Welcome to Harlan Kentucky, I've been here for about a week now, here in the mountains everything…read moreis spread out It takes a little bit to get anywhere, but the one thing that this area of Kentucky is not short on is unique coffee shops, in Harland Kentucky in the old Buttermore building, you really feel like you have stepped backwards in time. There's an area in the back that feels like your living room, you're surrounded by old books on all four sides, there was a live fire chimney that we sat by for quite a while. This place is filled with thousands of books, a lot of them containing Appalachian literature showing the history of this place. Today we had the creme brulee frappe, a hot coal miner latte, and a hot mocha latte. I was able to order the lattes in "for here" mugs which made for great pictures. We also got the bacon mac and cheese panini, I'm not a big fan of putting mac and cheese in sandwiches, but this tasted amazing. With this being a small downtown area on an early Thursday morning, they only had one employee Skylar, but she was amazing and able to still get everything out quickly and she was very friendly while we had a lot of questions. Final note, I was impressed with the name of this business Moonbow Tipple. Moonbow which means lunar rainbow and tipple which can mean someone who drinks a lot or what your favorite drink would be. Which sounds like a great name for a bookstore. So have to speaking to the barista, moonbow is common occurrence here in this part of Kentucky and Tipple has to do with a coal tipple.

The interior has a cute roasting station. I spoke briefly with the manager/owner (Greg) who has operated in this location for about 5 years. I had a large cup of brewed coffee (it was a medium roast) with 2% milk. Wow! This delightful cup of coffee kept me awake for the remaining drive. Note to readers - this is more of a "grab-n-go" place that does not have much indoor seating. Thank you Yelp for leading me to this coffeehouse tucked in a hidden area of Johnson City, TN. If you're a student at ETSU, it's worth the 5-6 minute drive to get freshly brewed coffee here. If you are driving between Asheville, NC and Abingdon, VA and sorely in need of something a bit stronger than a cup of coffee at Starbucks, I would recommend Pike House Coffee in a heartbeat.
