We did not have a reservation, but they fit us in as a walk-in at a small coffee table with 2 ottoman seats. Not the most comfortable set up, but I appreciate the cozy atmosphere, almost like you are sitting in someone's very posh and dimly lit den. All the NOLA classics were featured, like Vieux Carre (no likey), old fashioned (likey), and hurricane. There were some twists on the classics as well. I liked the newer house specialties, and ended up having 3 drinks, more than I intended. We snacked on some popcorn chicken, which was nothing special, but very satisfying when hungry. We were also lucky enough to be there when the live jazz band played a brief set, which really set the mood. I took off a star because not every drink was a homerun, and the service was a bit too impersonal for a speakeasy. We had a different server each time. One of my favorite parts of going to a speakeasy is to watch the bartenders work their magic and ask them for recommendations, and if I'm lucky, maybe get an off menu drink. Not quite set up that way here.

I go there usually for a nightcap, but there is no reason why you couldn't make an evening of it. There's a restaurant upstairs and by all accounts, the food is decent. I cannot personally vouch for it, though. The clientele tends to be locals, so it could be a great way to meet new people from your neighbourhood. I like to support local businesses. Cleverly incorporating dim red lighting and decor, I recommend you go down to Vanilla Room for a schmooze, a smooch and some smooth cocktail action.

The place is a little worn but that adds to the charm of it. Also, don't be discouraged by the seemingly small space as you walk in, there's plenty of room upstairs (+ a quaint balcony). It's got the best cocktails in Leichhardt (probably the inner west) and a wicked value-for-money tapas menu. Now unlike other places trying to pass off "small-dishes" as tapas and serving up a pathetically small amount of food on each plate and charging $20+ for each one, this place does $5-$12 plates and there is enough on each one to give a group of 4 a taste or, like us; a couple, a hearty bite. The Haloumi, Chorizo and Pear/Rocket/Parmesan salad are a great place to start but really just about anything on the menu is a good choice! Tonight, for a final bill of about $60/pp, my partner and I ate 'til we were on the edge of comfortably full and stuffed (8 dishes in all). We drank 2 cocktails each, I had a starter cocktail which was a Caipiroska variant with Rasberry and Macadamia and my date had the Violent Femme, a wicked dessert-style cocktail with Baileys, French Chocolate and Violet Crumble. We also had 3 glasses of red ($9) between us. The price of the cocktails are reasonable @ $15 - if this place were in the cbd it would command 50% more $$$, but as it's in Leichhardt (down the quiet end), it's very affordable.

It's a little dirty, a bit tired and service is unpredictable. The terrace upstairs has the potential to be such an amazing place to hang out (and a great space for private functions) and the downstairs area is big, dark and condusive to romance (ahhh... memories....)... but overall Kuletos has lost some of the spark/energy that can be found in similar bars across Sydney. Despite the tiredness, this is a great bar to start your night (or spend your evening, if you're not having a big one). Grab some two-for-one cocktails, unwind with friends and transition into a more tipsy, carefree version of yourself. You'll have a good time, the drinks are great, it's got a nice vibe... but it could be so much more.

It is 3 levels separated by street art painted walls. The inside levels have some bar, stool and table seating, the atmosphere is quite closed up and dark. The upstairs level has picnic tables and a far view of the city and has a completely different feel compared to inside. Maybe it is the daylight drinking or my older eyes but it is showing some age, but still if I am in Newtown I will be grabbing a Toblerone.
