They stuck some nuts and water in front of me and started a tab. I was all set. While it's not the New Orleans style place it's described as, the atmosphere is great. As the night goes on it gets crowded but you can still move around. Prices are on the higher side, but you're paying for quality.

I got to Earl's and was met with a modern take on N'yorleans - nought ies' hip hop, hot (seriously) bartenders in singlets with beards & 40's haircuts & voodoo trinkets galore. I was hooked. I ordered "something with gin" and my friend got a dark & stormy. The drink I got was really readily drinkable, smooth & tasty. My friend said the d&s was the same. After several months of hammering shit together and an injury or two, these two fellas have found their Arcadia, and joined the Sydney small bar scene. Arcadia is right near that really ugly sculpture on the corner of Redfern & Regent. When you walk in, the light is warm (maybe a little too bright?) and the place is decked out delightfully: exposed bricks, rustic metal chairs, stunning glass mirrors (from Rozelle markets), and a back patio area full of well tended plants. It's a gorgeous garden space, and yes, this does provide a spot for smokers. The bar itself is large & wooden), with the bar stools just a tiny bit too low. Like The Dock nearby, this is a place where it's fine to linger at the bar all night, chatting with the owners. It's a spacious place, and we spotted an upstairs - though didn't venture up there on this visit. There are 2 beers on tap (Coopers & a crisp German Larger of some description), and right now they've printed up their wine list, with the cocktail menu still in the works. Actually that's quite good because you can ask the guys for classic cocktails & they're happy to oblige (at approx $12, depending on what you order). The Old Fashioneds were excellent, and mixed with precision & humour. You can order food from Wah Fung (across the road) and eat it in the bar, and they'd probably let you bring in a Vietnamese roll from that little place nearby. It's pretty laid back. All in all, this place is excellent, and will most likely get rather busy on weekends. I almost wanted to give it a bad review just so we can keep it to ourselves.

There were a decent number of beers on tap, and three separate bars (though one of the was a restaurant, oh and four if you count the one outside). During the week and specially in the summery days plenty of people after 5pm for cheap drink and nice food. The place is really big. Lots of seating outside and inside. has two outdoor areas where you can enjoy the sun on comfy couches. Once went for a farewell party on Thursday after work but finish paring around midnight. The place is famous for the Thursday dancing evening. One minus - very young Thursday night crowd but the music was great. Because the place is located in North Sydney I will be coming back for more good times here.

With most pubs in the area and their swanky bistros, $16 would be considered cheap. Not at the Landsdowne, serving up pub meals the way they are supposed to be served - with lots of change left for beer.

I love how this place does drinks - there's four taps of rotating craft beer/cider, and once they're out they tap a new flavour. They ran out of 2 beers while we were there, and a new keg was quickly tapped each time. They have cardboard signs serving as labels - an easy way to keep the signage current - and at $8-9/pint, its a great way to try different beers without damaging your wallet. For wine they only offer 1 red and 1 white each night, and those change daily. The cocktails are made with care, with a good selection of classics (martini, Manhattan) and some fruity modern conceptions as well. Food was quite good, despite some of the portions being small. The cheesesteak for $16 could easily be consumed in a few bites. The pulled pork for $16 was delicious, served between two toasted pieces of delicious bread (not the "hoagie" I was expecting, but some of the best pulled pork I've had in Australia), and a better serve than the cheesesteak. The sliders were, again, on the small side. At $4/each or 4 for $15, you'd need 4 to make a meal. I found the chicken sliders a bit bland, possibly being overpowered by the potatoes in the garlic mash. The beef sliders were much better, with a delicious pickle relish. Of course, I had to grab the wings (6 for $9 or 12 for $16) which were one of the standouts for the night. A bit sweet at first, they pack a bit of a punch with a heat that builds. The three chip options (chilli cheese fries, sweet potato wedges, and steak fries with chipotle mayo) were all pretty good. Rumour (or rather, Facebook) has it that this place does $0.50 wings and $5 hot dogs on Wednesdays - definitely worth checking out. Come early if you want a table - we managed to grab one of the last of them at 6 pm on a Saturday, and didn't see much turnover during our 3 hour stay.

I asked for the basic, but the bartender quickly tried to get me to try the jalapeno margarita. I was quick to decline since I'm not into jalapeno or spicy drinks. The drink was mixed and strained into a martini glass... didn't seem to be as full as it should have been, but I wasn't upset. Drink tasted great, not too strong, too sweet, or too tart. I noticed lots of people getting the freshly pressed apple drinks, so I decided to try one. When in Rome, er, Newtown.... Asked for the Sailor Jerry and apple, but once again, the bartender was quick to recommend something different. He wanted me to try JD Tennessee Fire and apple. I know it's like Fireball, which I hate, but he was very persistent with his glowing recommendation, so I obliged. I'm glad I did, because it was delicious. You could only taste a hint of the whiskey, but mixed in with the fresh apple juice - which had a nice frothy foam on top - it was like cinnamon spiced apple sauce. Yum! If you don't listen to the bartender's advice, listen to mine! Prices? Eh, it's Sydney, not cheap. It is what it is. In the end, very pleased with my visit. Kind of annoying that both times I asked for a drink, they tried to convince me to make me something else (must have been competing on a promo or something), but hey, their advice was sound and if I didn't listen, I would't have had my delicious applesauce drink!
