    Roast Trio

We came to The Trout Inn after hiking Port Meadow. It was a lovely old pub! There is plenty of seating inside and outside. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We sat outside by the river. They usually have peacocks around the tables in the summer. The menu was diverse and creative. They also offer okay drinking and dessert menus. Our food was prepared and served within 10 minutes. I highly recommend coming on Sunday for their brunch roast. I had their Roast Trio (pork, beef, and chicken) which comes with a few sides. There is definitely plenty to share between two people.

Normally the food is great as you can see the starters were delicious. However the desserts were not up to standard as they came out with the ice cream melted and pudding swimming in melted ice cream. Service was great as always and staff are always pleasant. I understand it can be busy at times but I would have thought the kitchen staff would have noticed the liquid mess with the desserts. Hopefully next time it's up to scratch.

The star of this place is arguably the location and setting. Very peaceful with great views and a nice atmosphere. I find staff to be so-so. Front desk staff is hospitable depending on who you are. Waitstaff is pretty attentive. Food looks nicer than it tastes. A bit on the bland side. Not sure the Roast Trio is really worth the extra £4/5. Comes with a slice of beef, a piece of pork loin, and a chicken quarter. Roast Chicken comes with half a chicken at £14. I thought the portions were alright and would've been nice if it came with a side of gravy instead of having to ask for it since they put so little on the plate. Staff offered sauces to all other tables except us, which would probably have made a difference on the blandness.

Had dinner here last night. Ambience was great as was the service. The food - very disappointing. Ordered the fishcakes and onion rings, but server couldnt figure out how to order rings instead of fries. I got both sweet potato fries and onion rings. Rings were burnt, fishcakes were tasteless and were like baby food inside - pureed and not flaked. Also rolled into a giant ball like arancini, not a cake. Sweet potato fries were best part of plate. Ordered an Eton Mess for dessert - I think they sliced 1 strawberry for the entire plate. Tasted good, but more cream than meringue or fruit. Nothing here to bring me back again.

The Trout is an institution of every season. In the warm weather, the outdoor seating by the river with peacocks meandering amongst the tables is one of the most pleasant places you can be. In the cold, the cozy, country interior with live fires, nice armchairs and ancient wooden beams have the same effect for the opposite reasons. A very pleasant way to get to the Trout is to walk up Portmeadow. At the opposite end from Jericho, you can walk up the Thames tow-path and when you see the ruins of Gadstow Abbey, you're almost there (can't miss it.) The food menu is somewhat up-market and delicious. Drink selection is not great, but not the reason to go here anyway. I would suggest making any retreat from the city to here. It is not far outside the boundaries and you feel as though you're at a country pub in a matter of minutes on the bus.

Firstly: The Trout is gorgeous. No matter which direction you come from (through Wolvercote or through Port Meadow), it's a lovely stroll even to get to the Trout. The outdoor seating area at the trout is beautiful, overlooking a canal & weeping willows, with lots of ducks, swans & other wildlife bobbling about. I even saw a Heron! Just around the corner is Port Meadow as well, with horse, sheep & other cute animals. Aside from the lovely outdoor section of the Trout, the major selling point of the Trout for me is the interior. Low ceilings, exposed wood beams & brick, cozy lighting, warm & inviting colour scheme. Perfection. But I digress. I've been here a few times. Twice for a proper dinner, and a few other times, just for a casual drink. Be warned; The Trout is extremely (extremely) busy on Sundays, even more so if the weather is nice. So I suggest going on a weekday afternoon, perhaps? (Really though, I don't blame the crowds, because It is the perfect place to wander to on a lazy day) All of the food I've ever had here tastes & looks gorgeous, but is quite pricey. Also, the beer selection is kind of weak compared to other places around Oxford, if I'm honest. There is an extensive overall drinks menu, but I'm a beer girl. Verdict: The Trout is a pretty-but-pricey gastropub that's got lovely enough surroundings that it's worth the trek all the way up to Wolvercote, even if you're too broke to indulge in the fabulous food menu. Get a beer and sit in the garden!

Came to The Trout Inn as I was just passing through Oxford. I read the reviews and thought it was a wise choice to make a pit stop at and I brought a large appetite. Very crowded on a Saturday afternoon. We were lucky to find seating in a reserved section but we didn't know it was reserved. Our waitress was nice and allowed us to stay. The menu is quite pricy when you are dining on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday through Friday you can get a three course meal for under 20 pounds. I had a hard time finding something affordable on the menu. We started off with a Mediterranean Mezze. The baba ghanoush was very tasty. The harissa hummus was interesting. It didn't taste anything like hummus, maybe that had to do with the harissa paste, which was new to me. The tzatziki sauce had a refreshing taste. The chermoula crusted flatbread was on the oily side. I was hoping to have a healthy appetizer but this flatbread changed that. I couldn't tell if it was fried or just swimming in a ton of oil. I would love this appetizer with a toasted flatbread minus the oil. The hazelnut dukkah crusted aubergines were quite good, tasted like they were also fried. We ordered the butternut squash cannelloni and the carne pizza. The carne pizza looked fine, but the squash cannelloni had just a faint butternut squash taste. Lots of cheese. Enjoyed two pints of Peroni, beer was kept full at all times. I did like the friendly peacock who greets customers in the beer garden. The beer garden is beautiful, has a nice river with fish, ducks, swans and a male peacock. Dogs are welcome. Will definitely have to sit outside next time.

A short bike ride along the thames from Oxford is The Trout. Just past the godstow lock. We visited on a perfect summer day and sat out on the patio overlooking part of the canal. What sort of appears as a typical inn/pub is a bit different as you enter and explore. Looking at the menu it looked like it was going for upscale items, but the prices were very reasonable and maybe on the low side. Which was a nice surprise. We had a great lunch of roast garlic with rustic breads (three kinds, all wonderful). A vodka cured salmon with horseradish and beat creme fresh, and a simple pizza margarita. I have philosophical differences about the pizza, mainly about the crust, but there was no arguing that the ingredients were fresh and very tasty. A good pint to go along with it all and it made for a great stop on our bike ride north along the Thames. Wish I could go back tomorrow.

This pub appeared in the Tv series Morse. There is a lovely river, that is fast flowing under a footbridge, that can be seen through the windows. The pub has had a big reputation for about 30 years! The food has had a big effect on getting people to this slightly out of the way pub. I think I first visited here in the 1970's. It has been decorated many times since then. The staff are young and polite. This pub is always busy. The food portions are not huge. I tried the trout. I think it died of starvation! The puddings save the day. Its not cheap but a good place for a treat.

    Nice escape from the rain!

Nice place just out of town. Kelly was a great waitress and took care of us. A little far out from town, but a nice setting

Disappointing and slow service, compounded by being served 2 bits of dry bread and chips (some green) masquerading as a hummus sandwich.

There's also a second floor with additional seating and bar games if downstairs is too packed. We were traveling with children, including a toddler in a stroller, and had zero issues with the kids inside. (They weren't loud and didn't make a mess so that may have helped) Food on offer is traditional pub food, and everything I tried was fantastic. Service was always quick and friendly. Zero complaints. The Plough Inn is perfectly located for people watching, so swing by for a drink, take a beat, and watch everyone else rush by the windows.

It has the external and internal ambiance of an old times, British pub. The building is amazing looking and the inside is awash with wood and warm lighting. There is an upstairs as well, where you can sit by the window ina cozy chair and enjoy a pint while you watch the crowds walk by. But... The service was unwelcoming when we entered. We were greeted and acknowledged immediately at all pubs we went to, as we walked in. When we walked in here, the bartender looked at me and I had a sense that she was annoyed and I almost thought we had walked in while they were closed. There was only 3 other patron in the building. I had to walk all the way to the bar and then stood there for a couple minutes before she acknowledged me. My wife and I both commented about the strong odor of fish, when we walked in, and not cooked fish. Smelt like we were in a fish market. Because of this, we headed to the second floor. I ordered a beer and my wife a cider, both were good. We wanted something shareable to eat because we had been walking around all day and had dinner reservations in 3 hours. The menu raved about their 14 inch deep pan pizzas, so we ordered one. The only thing deep about it was, in fact, the pan. The pizza was extreme thin and very flimsy. They do have shuffle board there, but it's £10 for 55 minutes. Since there was nobody there, we didn't have to pay to play. If all you wanted was a pint and to see a nice looking pub, you could grab one here but it isn't a place to sit down and stay a while.
