This is Thomas Hutton. Back in the early 1990's, I was looking at a train set called the Mid Atlantic Limited Edition. The set was going for $700, but it was unwrapped. One of the cars in it that belonged there had to be taken out, so the guy had to get a car that matched the set with the other cars, and I just didn't think it was right. I didn't buy the set, so sometime after that I bought the same set at another store for $350. Some time after this, I had purchased two New Jersey Transit sets at the train station at full retail. Years later, I've heard complaints about this place. In 2020, I bought about 6 Lionel items from the shop. On November 16th, this man Dan came to my house and I wanted to sell him my trains. I was hoping I would get $3,500, but then I started to bring that amount down. I came back at him with $2,200, and he wanted to give me $1,100, and then he decided to give me $1,150. Then he brought it down to $1,100. I had purchased an engine for $995 from David Shaw and I told Dan that I had paid that much and I was told by another dealer that that same engine goes for $500 on Ebay. Dan mentioned that he would give me $250. It seemed that he was offering half of everything. Anyway, I got $1,100 for everything and I just did not think it was fair. I think Dan is a cheat and I think this is a terrible business and are ripping people off. I will never shop there again. Everything I said here is the truth, God as my witness. Amazing. Unbelievable . Friendly. This place is great. I went with my son who is fascinated with trains. The owners were so helpful, first on the phone, and then in person. When we went our first time last week, we were impressed and thankful of their COVID concerns and precautions. They made us feel welcome and safe- something extremely important these days. Today we went back because our son wanted to used his well-earned money to make his first big purchase. Sue was so amazing in all aspects of the transaction, including him in counting the money, doing the math, and making sure everyone was pleased. The staff is unprofessional. Horrible customer service. Called the store before Christmas to get some assistance and the staff that answered the phone says "we can not help you on the phone now as we are too busy. Please come after Christmas, during the week, when we will have more time to help you". Really? Is this how you treat customers that have been buying trains and accessories for years from your store. We also live an hour away so they are telling us when to travel to their store. ?? Unbelievable!! Went back after Christmas, on a Wednesday, as instructed by their staff, with my family and Dave was rude and did not want to help us. Will never shop at this train store again. The staff needs to respect all customers and they wasted our time traveling for nothing. Small business won't survive with horrible customer service!!! read more

Brought in a bunch of trains from 1959/60 to sell. Met with Dan who did the appraisal of my items. We had a great conversation about model trains and real trains, memories of playing with these trains and other tidbits of knowledge. Spent an enjoyable hour or so and got a very fair price for my collection. Dan took the time to explain what had good value and what was very common and not worth a lot. I did a lot of research before I brought my collection in and his offer matched up very close to what I came up with. This is a wonderful store with very nice and knowledgeable people. Stop by and play with the layouts they have setup. You'll have a good time and maybe want to get a set of your own. read more

This is so totally cliche', but also so incredibly true. I'm more likely to take the time to write a review when someone/someplace needs to be praised and this is one of those times. The Train Station in Mountain Lakes, NJ is an incredible business with family history going back to the 1970's. The original owners son is there and along with his business partner I assume, they both do an amazing job running this store. It is always full of stock, and it is an education the second you walk into the store. Not only are there more types of trains than you can imagine, they also have a decent selection of Vintage Pressed Steel toys such as Tonka Trucks. Also, they sell Slot Cars as well!! These guys aren't driven by $$ and definately more so by great customer service and establishing long term relationships with their customers. All businesses should be run like this one!!
