Lois Hillock, of New Ipswich, was the owner. She closed up shop with literally TWO DAYS notice. I…read morehad two days to pick up the clothes I'd consigned there. Of course, their phone was disconnected & on the voice mail they left for me they didn't bother telling me what hours they would be there, so I had to pop by several different times until I finally lucked out & they were there. They never bothered to put up a sign on the door saying when they would be there, either. When I did finally get there, I pulled in just as they were pulling in. They told me to park around back on the voice mail that they left & knock on the back door to pick up my clothes. So I parked, taking up ONE of the TWO empty spaces that were open. I looked at Lois who was still sitting in her car, & she mouthed that she had to park too. I pointed to the EMPTY parking spot next to me. She angrily pulled in, muttering as she passed me that SHE had to park too. I ignored her. Well she parked didn't she?? There were two spots for two cars. The math works in my head! She handed me two bags of clothes. What, so I'm just supposed to take her word for it that she is honest enough to give me back ALL of my clothes & not take whatever she liked for her own grandchildren? I say that because they would regularly pay me up front for clothes that they liked for their grandchildren so those transactions weren't on the books. I'm just supposed to trust that they weren't like, "Well we're closing anyway, just take what you want & give her the rest." No apology for the short notice. No explanation. I asked her for my check because as long as I've been consigning there (YEARS) I'd never collected a check & I've consigned HUNDREDS of items there over the years. She claimed that her books were not balanced but that she hoped to get them balanced in a few weeks & then she would mail a check. Yeah right. "The checks in the mail." I left knowing full well I was never going to see the money I was due. I have since tried contacting Lois Hillock to get my check with no luck. I was told that November 1st (2012) was the LATEST the checks would get mailed. EIGHT MONTHS later & I've tried contacting her & still no check... Lois Hillock is a dishonest business owner. She closed up shop, didn't pay her bills (their phone line was regularly disconnected) & Belletete's owns the building & they told me that she still owes them rent, as well, & didn't pay her LOYAL consignors! It's not our fault that she was a lousy business owner... I would stay far, far away from her, both personally & professionally.

Avoid this horrific business and its unprofessional owner at all costs. We left thousands of…read moredollars worth of jewellery in their care for repairs and experienced WEEKS of delays, outright lies, inability to track or trace where our precious pieces actually physically were (there's no computer system, no recorded phone interactions- just hand scribbled notes in poor penmanship & employees who aren't appropriately trained and left confused), and unfinished work. When my husband reached out for the 10th time today Jacqui was atrocious to him- we told her we were no longer comfortable with them handling the order, they aren't trustworthy, and we just wanted to come pick up our jewellery. Jacqui told us that Hobbs has 'been in business for 61 years' and that we'd get it when we get it, and then HUNG UP on my husband. After going down in person to the store we were finally forced to get the Peterborough Police Department involved today. It was only under the threat of us pressing charges for felony theft that the owner finally produced my rings. They were at an offsite jewellers 45 minutes away, she had to send an employee to go get them, and the order hadn't even been started... despite being in their possession for weeks. Jacqueline can have her friends post fake glowing reviews all she wants, but they won't drown out authentic customer experiences. The only reason they continue to remain in business after "61 years" is because they have no google listing or reviews, no public facebook reviews, no registration with the Better Business Bureau, and therefore no louder way for us members of the public to warn each other about their disgusting business practices. As much as we all want to 'support local,' RUN AWAY from this place.

As others have stated, the people who work there are condescending and rude. I brought in three…read morewatches and asked about replacing the batteries and new watch bands. I have a large collection of Swatch watches and when I called the company they very graciously told me the ones I wanted worked on were "vintage" so they didn't have the exact bands but sent me complimentary bands. They also said they would replace the batteries and bands for free. I didn't want to drive to Boston to the store so stopped in a Hobbs. Rude, snarky and wildly expensive. Good luck keeping locals customers coming back with that attitude Ladies! Mr. Hobbs was such a gentleman, I'm sure he is rolling in his grave at the way his store is treating people.
