The location is awesome! The hotel rooms are nice. The service is great! The breakfast is superb.

The Thief stole our hearts... Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly but had a small snafu when trying to get to our room. We received the keys and went to our room but the key card did not work. I went back downstairs and the front desk guy came up with me to try the card again. When he tried it again it did not work so he tried the master key and the room opened to show us someone was already in the room. I then had to go back downstairs again to get confirmation of the correct room as he wrote the wrong room number down. (One floor off). The hotel is beautiful and has artwork/sculptures displayed throughout. It also has really nice water views. Rooms are sleek, modern, and spacious. My only complaint was the toilet was violently strong. The first couple of times I flushed the toilet, the lid was nearly closed all the way but still sprayed water out onto my leg (barf). I made a note to close the lid all the way and run out of the toilet room after that. Nightly turn-down service included cookies, a hot water thermos, tea, and a jug of water. Definitely a nice touch! Breakfast was amazing and I cannot say enough about the friendly staff working! They have a great variety and will also cook to order if they do not have it as part of the standard menu. Their sign says, don't see it? Just ask! As a result, we ordered omelettes and french toast. I loved their tiny juice shots. They had a carrot ginger and a beet juice shot mix that were really good. The fitness center is a good size and has a variety of equipment. For such a high end hotel, I am surprised the TVs on the treadmills did not seem to be hooked up. As a random side note, it did not seem to get too hot in Oslo but one day as the elevator is glass and the sun was shining through, the elevator to get to the spa/fitness center was like a hot sauna. I hear the spa is fantastic and unfortunately we tried to book appointments and they were fully booked. :( We will have to try again next time we visit.

A knitting machine at the reception!

A top-notch boutique Hotel, which we immensely enjoyed our stay in Oslo, by the marina. Great view from our room, super comfortable bed, high tech & modern amenities, super nice bathroom & shower setting, impeccable staff and services (receptions, concierge service, breakfast, and bar). Hands down, one of the best Hotels I stayed. I would stay here again...and highly recommended to anyone who enjoys the Boutique & Unique Hotels. A really neat feature at the Hotel's bar as I experienced (culturally) arts (museum) and live-practical arts (through specialty drinks expressions). Something I have never experienced before, in which I enjoyed throughly...through Art Exhibits and Special cocktails. My experience here summed up a fantastic vacation in Norway (after journey to the Nord Cape to see the Aurora Borealis & Dogs sleighing). Life is good...travel richly!

Nice view from our balcony @ The Thief, Oslo

We had an excellent stay at The Thief last week-end. Our Deluxe room was good sized, modern and clean. There was a balcony and we had ocean view. Breakfast was really good. Not with an enormous amount of choices. Everything they served looked fresh, homemade and delicious. Pancakes for example, I 'm usually not a big fan of hotel pancakes. However, these were amazing. Crispy and tasteful. The scrambled eggs were made in small portions with real eggs. Every night, as we returned to our room, the staff had brought us a thermos of hot water, two cups with night time tea and two mini brownies. Nice. Unfortunately we did not have time to visit the spa, which looks awesome. Luckily you don't need to be a guest to use the spa, so we can go back just to have a spa day another time. The Thief is a bit pricey - but for a special occasion, it's totally worth it.

Extremely annoying hotel with amazing restaurant. Upon check-in was given key cards that didn't work. Then figuring out how to turn on the lights in the room was extremely confusing - the light switch is by the bed... The room door does not automatically shut. The bathroom trash can is tiny. The shower was impossible to figure out how to turn on because the twisting knob was stuck. They have no bubble bath. The comforter on the bed though was great and the restaurant is amazing. Come for the restaurant but probably stay somewhere else.

The Thief is a work of art in and of itself. From the artwork and sculptures displayed around the public areas of the hotel to the artwork and sculptures displayed around the private areas of the hotel, you'll want to discover it all. The staff here are top notch professionals. The rooms, unbelievably comfy. I was fortunate enough to receive a large room with a very good view. The bed had to be the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on. Forget about those "Heavenly Beds" at the Westin, this is what I imagine billionaires sleep on. The Thief is also home to the original album art of many Roxy Music albums. I was so surprised to learn of this as I am a huge Bryan Ferry fan. The hotel also offers free admission to the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art when you show your room key. The museum is located right next door. The hotel is one block from the harbor which is a perfect place to bird watch. I can't imagine seeing Oslo again in any other way. This experience was amazing.

A little history: The Grand Hotel was opened in 1874 by Julius Fritzner. It has a rich history, hosting international guests, celebrities, and even Nobel Peace Prize winners. Location: Grand Hotel is located in the city center of Oslo, Norway. You are literally within walking distance of many great attractions, restaurants, and shopping just outside its front entrance! Walk over or take a short ride to visit major attractions like the Royal Palace, Parliament, and Aker Brygge. It was a bit chilly when we visited in late May, however, with the brisk walking and a warm jacket we kept ourselves warm and comfortable. Accommodations: The hotel interior is stunning and exquisite in its design and decor. The rooms are suite sized and luxurious for your stay. Restaurants we dined in: During our stay, we were fortunate to experience dinner at the iconic Palmen restaurant. Entering the restaurant, your eyes are drawn to the most beautiful chandelier (see picture). The luxurious decor and expansive dining room sets the ambience for the culinary experience we were about to enjoy. The Palmen Restaurant is a renowned restaurant. The restaurant's innovative and dedicated Chefs have created an exquisite continental menu with a Nordic twist. We all enjoyed our dinner here. The service was 5 stars throughout our dinner service for 40! Attentive to everyone's needs and wants. The second location is the Grand Café: A historic cafe serving a rich breakfast buffet in beautiful surroundings. A little history: In 1874 Grand Café opened its doors. Back then, Oslo was called Kristiania. This is where it all started. Location: The Grand Café is located on the ground floor of the hotel. The new Grand Café is open and welcoming to it's guests. The kitchen is open with access to the chefs who prepare food with ingredients mainly from the Nordic countries, and with inspiration from other parts of the world. The decorative ceilings of Lars Backer have been unveiled and recreated, the original Thonet chairs have been renovated and the three famous Krohg paintings have been preserved. (Information is from its website). The fresh local fruits, Nordic cuisine, fresh local breads and so much more is a Foodie breakfast experience that I highly recommend when visiting Oslo. Do not miss your once in a lifetime opportunity to taste a 5 star culinary experience of local and international cuisine! The best way to see the food offerings is via the pictures posted for the restaurant! There is so much more that The Grand Hotel has to offer you! Check out its website for more details. Stay here if you can during your visit to Oslo, Norway. The Grand Hotel Oslo is a 5-star establishment I could not include all the food pictures in this review! One complaint and I've seen this elsewhere in Europe, is your inability to control the temperature in your room. If you want it cooler you have to make a request to the front desk. Our room on the 6th floor was fairly large (by European standards) and was comfortable with a nice view to the train station. Our rate included the lavish breakfast buffet with loads of choices as well as a few made to order items like eggs Benedict and something I've never seen in Europe-bagels! Public transportation options are also quite accessible for things that are a little farther afield. Getting there from the airport was rather easy. The train line from the airport ran directly to the Nationaltheatret station. From there, it was a reasonably easy 8-minute walk. The hotel itself was not necessarily what I would call elegant, but it was quite nice nonetheless. The lobby was spacious, warm and welcoming with an interesting fire place structure in the middle. There was a convenience store entrance off the Lobby for good measure. The service at the front desk was polite and efficient. Our check-in and check-out experiences were trouble-free and the time or two that we had questions involved very pleasant interactions with prompt answers. Our room was on the 9th floor affording a nice urban view. I was a little afraid of the size when I booked. Our only experiences to date with Scandinavian hotels in Sweden and Denmark were cramped rooms for very high prices. But we were pleasantly relieved with the discovery that our room was more comparable to American-sized rooms than Northern European rooms. We had plenty of space to feel relaxed. The decor was pleasant and the room was in good shape. The Wi-fi signal was strong and did not fail us at any point during our 5-night stay. The bathroom was clean with all fixtures working as expected. The room was equipped with a refrigerator which allowed us to keep leftovers, minimizing our food costs. The coffee provided was instant, but with the fast water heater that was OK. The hallways were neat and well-kept. We did not take advantage of the pool, but we noticed that other patrons clearly enjoyed that amenity. One of the notable things was the restaurant. I highly recommend booking a room rate that includes breakfast. The restaurant itself had quite a large seating capacity, so even at its busiest we could still find seating. The buffet was fabulous, rivaling many that I've seen in Asia. The hot selections were plentiful with eggs, potatoes, meats, pancakes and more. The bread selection was quite good and the yogurts, fruit, cheeses and greens were all you would want. The local specialty brown cheese was worth trying and became a favorite. The coffee was good as well. The cost was well worth what we received. It helped immensely that we visited in February allowing for us to take advantage of off-season pricing. But this still worked well for us because the weather was not overly cold and most attractions were still open. Our pre-paid rate with breakfast was around $656 including taxes for five nights. At about $131 per night, you really can't beat the value. The fact that we could walk or easily ride everywhere we needed to go made this hotel the perfect choice as an anchor point for our visit to the wonderful city of Oslo.

Check-in is done at self-service kiosks, which was quick and painless, and the staff I interacted with were friendly and helpful. My room was on the smaller side, but it was well designed with good storage, a comfortable bed, and a nice shower. Wi-Fi worked perfectly too. A couple of things to keep in mind: this isn't a full-service hotel. There's no daily housekeeping unless you ask, and there's no restaurant on site, just a breakfast bag you can buy or snacks at the "barception." If you want more variety, there are great bakeries and cafés right outside. Also, if you're sensitive to noise, ask for a courtyard-facing room since the station area can be lively at night. Overall, I'd say this place is perfect if you want a clean, affordable, and super central base in Oslo without paying for extras you might not need. I'd definitely stay here again.

The balcony is awesome. the view directly across is a parking garage, but the balcony itself is nice wood plank with evergreens in planters and cute modern chairs.
