I was disappointed to see lamb missing from the choice on this particular Sunday though, so I went for the option of half a roast chicken. It came with a couple of roast potatoes, a Yorkshire Pudding and gravy on the plate, and then a plate of other vegetables was given for people to share (one between two). This had mashed potato, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. For me, there wasn't enough mashed potato, and the broccoli and cauliflower were both a bit too 'al dente' for me. However, they didn't taste raw, so I lived with it. As I like a decent amount of gravy, I asked if I could have some more and they happily gave me a small pouring jug of extra gravy. Following the meal I was full, but felt that around £8.00 was pushing it a bit for a Sunday lunch, especailly one that was less than generous with the veg. I didn't leave disappointed, but just feeling that a little more generosity wouldn't have gone amiss. The other time I went, I opted for the interesting sounding Teriyaki Surf and Turf. This consisted of a good sized piece of steak, cooked as requested, and some battered prawns with coriander. The dish was served with a Teriyaki dip and a portion of chips. The steak was cooked as i'd requested it, rare, and seemed of good quality.. The prawns were nice, however, not enough of them. Only three I seem to recall, so again, a little more generosity wouldn't have gone amiss, especially as this was pretty much the most expensive dish on the menu coming in at just under £13.00. If you are out for a wander along the River Trent and find yourself around here, you could do far worse than pop in for a bite to eat. I have friends who live nearby which is the reason i've been a few times now, but i'm not sure i'd go out of my way to get here. Oh, they usually have a few real ales on, if that's your thing.

Whereas you used to have to queue at the bar to order your food (and would often find they had sold out and then have to return to ask what people wanted, then queue again!) there is waited service, which is a big improvement. The last time I was here, it was mediocre. Such a shame because the place itself is all old beams and wooden floors, with a lovely garden in the back. It can get very busy, expecially Sundays. As was the beer, the food and the staff. An old building from 1240 no less, Ye Olde indeed. Proper historic stuff in fairness. Inside there is the main bar area, but then off to the right there are a few smaller areas that are more intimate. I ended up getting a bottle of Bulmers with ice (crushed ice that made for a lovely cider slushy), but they also had a few real ales on tap that would have done lovely also. One that stuck in my mind was the Nottingham Brewery EPA, which I had tried the day before from a bottle and liked. Good to see it on tap. For food I went with the Lasagne with salad and chips, which was really good. Proper lovely pub grub. The staff all appeared to be rockers, which was fortunate for them because some great rock tunes were coming out of the speakers through out the pub ;) When back in Notts, I will go out of my way to get back to Ye Olde Salutation Inn.

Built into the rock and filled with low ceilings, uneven floors, and centuries of history, it genuinely feels like stepping back in time. From the dim lighting to the old stone walls and hidden nooks, it feels authentic and atmospheric without trying too hard. It is the kind of place where you want to slow down, look around, and soak it all in. If you appreciate history or enjoy places with a bit of mystery and legend behind them, this pub delivers in a big way. Service was good overall but not outstanding. Staff were friendly and helpful, though things moved at a relaxed pace, especially when it got busy. Orders were correct and everyone was polite, but there were moments where service felt just okay rather than exceptional. That said, the staff fit the vibe of the place well and were happy to answer questions about the history, which added to the experience. Drinks were solid and what you would expect from a historic pub. Nothing mind blowing, but enjoyable and well poured. The food was decent and satisfying, fitting the traditional pub feel, even if it did not completely steal the show. Overall Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is a place you go for the atmosphere and history first, with good service and an enjoyable experience rounding it out. It is not perfect, but it is unique, memorable, and absolutely worth a visit when in Nottingham. Four stars for a spooky, historic pub that delivers charm and character in spades.

Like all structures of this era, the ceilings are quite low and the stairs and rooms are quite twisty and full of surprises. The staff was so nice and efficient. I ordered at the bar downstairs and had my meal delivered to a table on the next floor (see video). I've taken many trips to the UK, and frequented many establishments with signs claiming the "world's best fish and chips.". The fish was amazing and perfectly prepared. The chips were not greasy at all, and very flavorful. The highlight was the fresh peas! Bursting with flavor. I rate the fish and chips second only to the Mayfair Chippy in London, however, the ambiance and experience takes it over the top even if you're only slopping by for a pint.

The serve proper beer (Castle Brewery) and some excellent guest beers (Up to 14 cask ales. Joy!). The staff are well capable of pulling a good pint, and they must keep the cellar in good order, I've never had a bad pint, and I've had a few here - hic. The food is good too, with daily specials and a curry night. It can get very busy, especially if there's a match on (cricket or football). The only thing that lets it down is the outside area, which is really just a postage stamp in disguise (you can't fool me).
