An absolutely stunning Art Deco pub. Built in 1938, it is a Grade II listed building and has won an…read moreaward from English Heritage for its refurbishment in 2001. The revolving door in the main entrance brings you straight into the main lounge with its sweeping bronze staircase; this in turn leads you up to a function room which was the original Cocktail Bar in the 30's and 40's. Lots of original fittings remain, and all the furniture is true to its era. There is a lot of wood panelling (English maple) and chrome and bronze fittings. Even the toilets are worth a visit - lots of original marble, wood and magnificent mirrors. For cricket lovers, The Test Match is only a mile from Trent Bridge. There are 3 or 4 enormous murals depicting Notts cricketers from the bygone era of the game. You'll also find some interesting memorabilia framed and mounted on the walls. I haven't mentioned the beer yet! Well-kept draught beers from the owners Greene King dominate the bar - the light IPA, the formidable Abbot and the even stronger, slightly cloying Old Speckled Hen. Add to that the ales of the local Nottinghamshire brewery Hardys and Hansons. Guest beers, too, and I felt at home on seeing The Reverend James, a product of the Cardiff brewer, Brains. Friendly young bar staff complete, for me, a perfect 10 for this beautiful piece of heritage.

I was disappointed to see lamb missing from the choice on this particular Sunday though, so I went for the option of half a roast chicken. It came with a couple of roast potatoes, a Yorkshire Pudding and gravy on the plate, and then a plate of other vegetables was given for people to share (one between two). This had mashed potato, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. For me, there wasn't enough mashed potato, and the broccoli and cauliflower were both a bit too 'al dente' for me. However, they didn't taste raw, so I lived with it. As I like a decent amount of gravy, I asked if I could have some more and they happily gave me a small pouring jug of extra gravy. Following the meal I was full, but felt that around £8.00 was pushing it a bit for a Sunday lunch, especailly one that was less than generous with the veg. I didn't leave disappointed, but just feeling that a little more generosity wouldn't have gone amiss. The other time I went, I opted for the interesting sounding Teriyaki Surf and Turf. This consisted of a good sized piece of steak, cooked as requested, and some battered prawns with coriander. The dish was served with a Teriyaki dip and a portion of chips. The steak was cooked as i'd requested it, rare, and seemed of good quality.. The prawns were nice, however, not enough of them. Only three I seem to recall, so again, a little more generosity wouldn't have gone amiss, especially as this was pretty much the most expensive dish on the menu coming in at just under £13.00. If you are out for a wander along the River Trent and find yourself around here, you could do far worse than pop in for a bite to eat. I have friends who live nearby which is the reason i've been a few times now, but i'm not sure i'd go out of my way to get here. Oh, they usually have a few real ales on, if that's your thing.

Whereas you used to have to queue at the bar to order your food (and would often find they had sold out and then have to return to ask what people wanted, then queue again!) there is waited service, which is a big improvement. The last time I was here, it was mediocre. Such a shame because the place itself is all old beams and wooden floors, with a lovely garden in the back. It can get very busy, expecially Sundays. Well, it seems that there are a lot of pubs that are attempting to claim the title to being the…read moreoldest pub in England, and this is one of them (but of course a pub will try to claim as being the oldest, as it is a lot of marketting). Mind you, the interesting thing was that a number of bikies rocked up when I was here, so yeah, it seems to be a very English thing that one of the oldest pubs ends up being a bikie bar. Still, it is pretty cool pub.

The other thing is that the crusaders would visit this pub on the way to the crusades, but there weren't any here when I visited, rather it was packed with all sort, probably tourists, considering the reputation that this pub has. Also, another really cool thing is that this pub is built into the side of a rock outcropping (upon which the castle is built), so yeah, there is so much about this pub that is cool (other than the crowds, which is annoying).

Whenever I go home my friends know they'll have to meet me in the pet shop, and they really don't…read moremind. It's a proper pub, no DJs, no loud music, no amusement arcade. The serve proper beer (Castle Brewery) and some excellent guest beers (Up to 14 cask ales. Joy!). The staff are well capable of pulling a good pint, and they must keep the cellar in good order, I've never had a bad pint, and I've had a few here - hic. The food is good too, with daily specials and a curry night. It can get very busy, especially if there's a match on (cricket or football). The only thing that lets it down is the outside area, which is really just a postage stamp in disguise (you can't fool me).
