Lots of retro games... great selection!
Kevin T.

Cool spot to pickup games, tech, and media. Prices were a little high on some items, others were extremely reasonable. Some cool rare CIB games and a ton of hard to find titles. Had other great items, Collectibles, phones, Laptops, and movies... but I came for the games. Store felt a little cluttered and disorganized, but mostly because they have a ton of stuff. Staff was friendly and helpful. Found some cool items... make sure you check the Dollar Bins! I feel like I could find something new and cool anytime I went in. Worth a look if your in the area!

My favorite place to buy gaming related items. The staff is absolutely amazing. The manager(Holly) is very Knowledgeable and engaging and personable! I've never had a bad experience with them and will continue to patronize This establishment! I can't say enough good things and I promise any retro gamer or current gamer would prefer them hands-down over GameStop

I was actually trying to check in here the other day when I realized that this store, while it appears on foursquare, Facebook, and elsewhere, didn't have a Yelp presence. Problem solved! Anyway, Tech Exchange is basically a buy/sell video games/electronics store. Everything they have they bought from someone just like you who didn't want the item anymore (or just needed the money!), kind of like a video game pawn shop, though they have many other things as well: game consoles, laptops, action figures, DVDs, Blu-Rays, etc. I come here on a weekly basis to try to score a few more movies for my collection (good pricing on those, $3 a piece, 2 for $5, or 5 for $10) and I keep my eyes open for new things they've gotten in. They have a good selection of games (ESPECIALLY if you're into game boy or one of the less-mainstream consoles), and pricing is pretty much what you'd expect to pay online for similar items. I've seen the store transform itself over the course of the past year, and they've really made it attractive and easy to look through. If you happen to be in the area and want a quick drink or an arcade game of The Simpsons, this place is for you. Staff are generally friendly, though aren't always quite so kind after customers depart, though (see my Cons list at the bottom of this review). That goes double for their Facebook page, which seems overly dramatic for a place business. Everyone here knows games like the backs of their hands, so you should be able to get a good answer to any of your gaming-related questions. All things considered, this is a fun place to go if you're buying, selling, or just want to be reminded of games that you used to spend hours upon hours playing with nothing to show for it. Just focus on what you're buying and less on the attitude of those doing the selling. Overall: 3.0 stars --------------- Pros: - You can find things here that your local retail places won't ever have. - The things they buy (and thus what they sell to you) are usually in great shape, so your risk of getting a defective product is low (and they're pretty reasonable about returns, too). - Staff members are knowledgable. - With a constant stream of people coming in to sell to them, they're always getting new things in. If you're local or a VCU student, you'll definitely find good items. Cons: - They compare online prices to determine their pricing, so don't expect to get things for much cheaper than you would on eBay or Amazon. - Like I said, staff members are nice to your face, though do have a tendency to talk about eccentric customers as soon as the eccentric customer leaves, within earshot of remaining customers. Kind of makes you wonder what they're saying about you after you leave. And the online drama doesn't help their case.

This is not correct information. You are only given cash for "old stuff".
Kirsti A.

Went in to sell some Xbox 360 games and a PS2. They told us they only offer store credit. When I pointed out that their website says they offer store credit or cash, they said they only give cash for "old stuff". I would recommend that they clarify that on their website.

We had a blast as a family, but this place would be great for a date night. $10 dollars gets you unlimited arcade play, From what I understand the upstairs provides tables for other multiplayer games like Dungeons and Dragons and etc. The location is central to multiple restaurants and bars making walking to and from easy. Parking is street only but we did not find issue with finding a close spot.

Ever since Circuit Arcade Bar closed, you have to carefully weigh your options: if you want drinks/food with your games, you have to do either Dave & Busters or Richmond Draftcade. If you want kids/ticket games, only Dave & Busters. If you want retro games, only Draftcade and DawnStar. And if you love rhythm games and old school light gun shooters... well, DawnStar is the only spot around! DawnStar is a video game shop up front, a card-game event venue upstairs, and an eclectic arcade in back. Their video game shop has a great selection, though like most game shops you aren't going to find better prices here than you would online. The arcade on the other hand is always worth a visit: two DDR cabinets, several rare light gun games, advanced racing sims, a ton of Japanese imports, and other hard-to-find rarities await you here. I have been a huge DDR fan since 2003 and relish any chance I get to keep my dancing muscles strong. Pricing for the arcade is one price for all-day: $15 Saturdays, $10 every other day. Thankfully those prices don't go up on holidays, so this is a great spot to hit on a weekday holiday! The staff here are very nice and very involved with the business: they regularly host video game and card game tournaments, post on social media daily, and have their own Discord if you want to keep up with their happenings on a more intimate level. I am very grateful that DawnStar exists and hope it sticks around for the long term! Overall: 5.0 stars --- Pros: - Fantastic arcade with hard to find games (especially rhythm games). - Well-stocked game shop with plenty of games and accessories, plus more. - Cool event venue with a strong community. - Fantastic staff who strive to make this a welcoming place for all. Cons: - $15 is understandable for Saturdays to keep volume a bit lower, though I generally stick to weekdays whenever I can to get the $10 pricing.

We owed about $15 extra to cover the purchase. When I attempted to use my credit card it was declined three times in a row using the chip. Then declined twice more with a second credit card's chip. This hasn't happened before and I use these cards regularly so I suspected there was something wrong with the credit card machine. The gentleman helping us said it was going through and not getting an error so he asked if he could try it with his personal credit card to see if it was a problem on his side. He performed a debit transaction on my balance successfully. Since I was trying credit I was skeptical that it was an apples to apples test but then he handed me the bag with receipt and told me to have a nice day. He essentially was covering my balance so, in my opinion, I would not look silly in front of my son since my credit cards weren't working. While I thanked him for the offer and appreciate his gesture, I could not accept his generous offer out of principle since I had plenty of money to pay. I luckily had enough cash to cover the balance and asked him to use it cover my balance which he graciously did. I usually don't have cash. Even though the experience was slightly embarrassing since my cards would not go through, the GameStop gentleman treated me respect and did whatever he could to fix the issue as if he was in my shoes. I can't say I always experience when I have interactions with other strangers. We should all take a lesson from him and treat each other with kindness. Thank you, sir!

My wife found this awesome little hobby shop last night while hanging out with a couple of friends, and when she came home and told me about it, we ended up going back together the next day. I'm into all things nerdy, especially anime and GUNPLA, so I grabbed an SD model kit and a Thousand Sunny Bandai kit from One Piece. They've also got individual actual Pokémon, One Piece, Magic decks, and individual cards in binders for sale (at least for Pokémon, I'm unsure of the other cards games.) They had some Anime models, Manga, a bunch of stickers, different types of dice (for tabletop gaming), plushies, some older video game stuff, and I think there were Warhammer model kits. It's a small local shop, so prices are a little bit higher than what you'd see at big box stores. BUT you're supporting a local business, and that's always really worth it. There are some game rooms in the back where people can play tabletop stuff like board games or Dungeons & Dragons. They've got a bathroom (I didn't check it out), plus a little section with snacks and sodas to indulge if you get hungry while you're there playing. Big shoutout to the guy behind the counter. He was super cool to my wife and her friends last night, and even more so when we came back today. I watched him today helping other customers too.
