I stopped on a Saturday at 11:30 am in May. Nobody was eating lunch - my first clue. Second clue - the outside of the building was dirty. Third clue - no items displayed in a case. I forged ahead, hoping I was wrong and this place was just not busy because of the road signs everywhere. No such luck. No bread. No "hand-dipped chocolates," three pieces of some pie, three pieces of something that looked like lemon bars? I bought three sugar cookies with red, white, and blue icing. I took them to go. After I finally opened the package, they were hard to open. It was tasteless, dry, and obviously made with pre-packaged sugar cookie dough. Yuck - not a return trip. Maybe the soup is good? They may have good sandwiches and paninis, but if you can't make a good sugar cookie, it is hard to see the value in anything else. read more

While driving through Kenton on our way to Port Clinton, we asked ChatGPT for lunch recommendations and were directed to The Sweet Note Cafe, described as one of the best lunch spots in town, offering sandwiches, soups, and a cozy, homemade feel. It was even highlighted as the "best overall lunch vibe." Unfortunately, our experience did not align with that recommendation. Upon arrival, we initially weren't sure the café was open. When we entered, we were met with a somewhat surprised reception, as though our presence was unexpected (Uh, oh... people!!). After a brief moment, someone approached the register to take our order. We each ordered a soup and a half sandwich. Overall, the food was underwhelming. The Caprese sandwich consisted primarily of mozzarella and tomato, notably lacking basil. It was served with a balsamic reduction, which added some needed flavor. I ordered the beer cheese soup, which resembled a thin, Velveeta-style cheese base with carrots and was quite bland--I found myself adding a significant amount of salt. My wife had the loaded baked potato soup and described it as unremarkable as well. For two half sandwiches, two cups of soup, and two bottled sodas, the total came to approximately $30. In our view, the quality did not justify the price. We left still feeling unsatisfied and ended up stopping at Love's for snacks. It seems the café may be better known as a bakery or confectionery, although there was limited evidence of that during our visit. Love The Sweet Note Cafe! The food is consistently great and there are a lot of options! Absolutely love that the Brunch Panini (one of my personal favorites) is available every day. I also really appreciate that some of the ingredients/items are locally sourced, which continues to grow small businesses in the area. Additionally, the chicken noodle soup, loaded potato soup, beef & noodles, grilled cheese and sirloin sandwich are all highly recommended! Dessert options are usually in a rotation- but also delicious! The service is also incredible! The kindness of Holly and her staff is unmatched! It's a huge reason why I started going there and have remained a loyal customer for years. I'm usually door dashing or picking up food on the go, so haven't ever had the pleasure of eating in the cafe. The road construction is a bummer, but is the case for most Kenton businesses if you've managed to go more than a block in Kenton- you'll notice that quickly. I ordered a cake a couple of years ago, last minute and Holly went above and beyond to make sure it was done on time, was super courteous and a heck of a baker. Not only did the cake taste amazing, but it was beautiful. I have eaten at her restaurant several times, and it's a cute vintage building in the square in Kenton. I ordered cupcakes and cookies to add to a dessert table for my parent's anniversary party and everyone loved the baked goods. I did brownie cupcakes with peanut butter frosting, Shawn's cupcakes, sugar cookies with frosting, and chocolate chip cookies. The cupcakes were beautiful and delicious. The frosting on top was both decorative and a great hit of sugar and full of flavor. The cookies were soft and tasted amazing. My mom would have normally saved some of her cookie for later but she couldn't stop because it tasted so good she couldn't wait to finish it. I ordered a personalized birthday cake with lemon cake and raspberry filled frosting and it was delicious!! My family and I all enjoyed it. It was rich, thick, creamy and had lots of toppings inside. The owner stayed in touch with me every step of the creation process, even sending me proofs of the cake before it was a finished product. Sweet note is locally owned & definitely worth a stop. It could easy be missed driving through town. So you have to do a little extra work to find it but you will be very happy you did it.
