It takes a lot to tempt me South of the river. A night out in the Sun might just do the trick again. An ardent fan of North London, I reluctantly found myself in Clapham on a Sunday evening surrounded my Durham graduates and Sloaney wannabes. I needed a drink to cheer me up, but from the moment Becky took me to The Sun, I was appeased. The building itself is really nice. Tables are spaced out in the high ceilinged main bar, and it has a nice proper pub feel. Dark wood, and fireplaces add to the atmosphere, but I spent my night in the garden. The pub has a lovely beer garden, with lots of proper tables spaced out, cover for when it rains, like Sunday, and more annoyingly, but appreciated by most, patio heaters. I hate them! Who came up with the bright idea of trying to heat up outdoors? And people wonder why we have climate change problems! What a waste of energy. Okay, rant over (although 6 pints in this rant did happen)! The beer is good (I drank Pride all night, and it was the proper stuff, not the watered down stuff you get in brass and pine pubs). The BBQ is awesome (£5 for a burger, £6 for a lamb burger), and there is a full menu from the kitchens 7 days a week. The staff are friendly, although generally Sloaney rejects as previously mentioned (I think I had to help them with my change most rounds), but it makes them easy on the eye! Sorry if that is a really sexist remark, but if a pub is going to employ only young fit girls, what do they expect us to think! We went to the Sun for one before dinner. Nice pub with lots of space but quite busy on a Sunday. The downstairs has more modern decor while upstairs you get ceiling murals and a fireplace. There's an outside area which will be great in summer as it's more of a semi- hidden side garden than an open front and has couches too. The atmosphere was nice but I think more appropriate for bigger groups. If you have 10 people going for lunch then it's perfect, if you're only 2 it feels a bit like you are taking up more space than you should. The staff is quite friendly and will help you carry some of your glasses if you're buying a Roy d and can't carry everything because the upstairs bar is not always open. In general it's a good place to have in mind when looking for somewhere out of the way to go last minute, otherwise wait till the weather is better so you can go sit outside. read more

I came to the Sun pub in Clapham Old town because my friend is a singer and was performing at an open mic night that they do every Monday night. I am always a bit wary of open mics in pubs because of the occasional disgruntled drinkers who talk over the performers. Thankfully, the pub is laid out on two floors with the open mic being held on the top floor - a beautiful, artfully decorated room with vaulted ceilings and squishy sofas. It is a perfect place to watch some top quality singing (the standard is very high here, it certainly isn't amateur.) I personally think this part is the best bit of the pub. Downstairs has a very different feel, but a good atmosphere nonetheless. My second favourite bit of the pub is the outdoor patio area, dressed with fairy lights and packed with tables for all the groups who congregate outside. Apparently this pub can get overly packed in the summer, but I came on an autumns evening and it wasn't too full. I don't think this place is known for its top notch food, but it is a great place to bring your mates- and if you can bear to sit quietly for half an hour, you will be treated to some fantastic singers. read more

The Sun in Clapham is like daybreak in pub form. The décor is amazing. Rich coloured paisley wallpaper coats the walls and dazzling chandeliers dangle from the ceiling. I really enjoy the atmosphere in here. It's so refreshing. The drinks are slightly more expensive than normal, but only by a few pence or so. If you're going on a first date and you'd like to keep it low key and romantic this is a good place to touch down. The environment is totally made for getting lovey-dovey and the food is divine. If swooning action is on your agenda this is the place for you. Every now and then, especially on key days like Thursday or Friday, this place gets packed. The place is absolutely swarming with people. If you're passing it by while you're walking down the street you will have to maneuver between throngs of beer drinkers having a fag on the sidewalk. The Sun is best when the sun is out so you can sit outside and enjoy being in Clapham Old Town, whist avoiding the crowds inside. Normally it's a bit too "Claphamite" for me personally, especially at the weekends when it gets crammed with that typical Clapham crowd. For me, it lacks the charm of its neighbours and never gets it quite right - when not so busy, you feel like you're rattling around inside, and when packed it's simply awful. If you must go and it;s too cold to sit outside then try and nab a sofa in the back room, or sit upstairs where there are round tables in a nicely decorated room, whci can be good for groups of friends. Been to The Sun twice, it's a great place to grab a drink and a bite to eat. I like the way they have set up there gin and Tonic section at the bar with small blackboards indicating what gin, tonic and garnish you can use to make your drink. Food wise I have only ordered the fish and chips, the portion size was massive and very tasty. My only negative comment would be that the toilets were pretty terrible. I realise it was a busy and sunny day but it put me off going back. read more

Well, apart from the service (it's really slow...), everything is OK. It's a good place to have a drink with a colleague or friend. There is a beer garden outside, which is a really nice spot in the sunny days. The food is also tasty although it's a pub. I really really really want to give The Sun 4 stars. Lovely staff. Fab pints. Cosy pubbiness. Great gastro. Lovely food. Celeriac in the roasted veg. CELERIAC IN THE ROASTED VEG. Yum. Here's my problem: My £14 roast was cold. The veg was all nice and toasty, but the meat, spuds, gravy, and yorkshire pudding were just... tepid. Looks like it's been a while since the last review of this place, so here's something more up to date. I booked a table to celebrate a birthday last Friday. I've walked past many times, seen it busy almost every occasion, but never actually been inside. First impressions were pretty awful as it smelt like a sewage pipe had leaked once I'd walked through the front door. Closer to the bar, the stale beer odour did little to cover up the sewer smell and I held little hope the fact our table was one floor up and would be far enough away to escape entirely. I always wonder why pubs insist you order at the bar, rather than just have a waiter/waitress....I don't know....wait on a table for example! Once we'd arranged the seating to accommodate our party (the tables weren't really set up to sit all 10 of us - quite slapdash about the whole booking), I took the 10 person order to the bar. 35 mins later the bar lady explained a couple of the main courses were no longer available, so she had to take new orders. The attempt to appease with 2 bottles of cheap wine was disappointing. Close to an hour since the initial order, the chefs left the kitchen for a 'fag break' on the terrace leaving our starters to start getting cold. When I brought the manager in, he was quite rightly embarassed and compensated us with a smorgasboard almost straigh away. Our mains arrived cold and continued in the same vein of disappointing most at the table. Again the manager offered a 20% discount on the final bill, which I thought was the least he could offer. I'm not one for trying to get freebies and for the price of this non-pretentious pub and shoddy service, I'd rather pay the gastro pub prices and actually have someone take my order from the comfort of my seat, get my dinner hotter than room temperature and served within a reasonable time of ordering....won't be going back, nor will the other 9 people I went with. Potentially a pleasant enough place middling inside downstairs, large outside area, and an upstairs bit I haven't explored, but gather is used mainly for functions, pub quizzes, and the ilk. Clientele, at weekends at least, seems to be pretty evenly divided between rowdy beerboys, quieter groups of friends supping wine, and people who are being lunched by their visiting parents, who thought this looked OK. Pretty good selection of beers and ales, reasonably kept; food looks standard quasi-gastropubby ( a selection of sharing/bar snack type things [ whitebait, stuff with chorizo], burgers (poshed up with beetroot tinged coleslaw), pies, roasts on a Sunday sorta-thing. So far, so good-ish. What let the place down, on my last visit, was the abysmally slow service loads of staff wandering around outside, but it taking the thick end of twenty minutes to get a drink at the not-very-busy bar. As you'll know, I tend to focus on the basic stuff; if you can't get serving drinks sorted in a pub, it doesn't look good. Hence, more of a meh than a must visit. read more

I don't mind The Sun, don't mind it at all. Was most recently here on a Sunday for some grub - had me the fish and chips was huge and tasty - all good on that front. My friends weren't so enamoured with the piece of plastic and the hair which served as a garnish with their dishes... but that's not the sort of thing I'd get upset about, especially when suffering an atomic hangover. My sunday trip brought on the realisation that it was actually full of 22 yo grads and sloaneys... I almost felt out of place! Please no more Jack Wills slouch trousers with ugg boots paired with a university rowing hoody. No more. This place is just very hot and cold for me. Sometimes I'll come for a couple of cheeky beers of a weeknight and be so relaxed, so mellow, that'll I'll happily sit on my pew all night. Occasionally we'll come here for drinks on the weekend before going out... and I feel a little flat in here. Maybe it's me? Maybe I've got bipolar. The bar staff are painfully slow at time too... especially when busy. But it's a solid choice for some chilled out beers. I'll come again... and who knows how I'll feel next time? read more

Great local pub with a decent outdoor area. Probably called The Sun because it's perfect for when the sun is out. Probably a little stuffy if it's raining. I've been here numerous times for friend's parties, which the perfect venue for such festivities. The pub itself has great character, a great vibe and decent priced drinks. I've never eaten here, though the food looks okay... As it's a very loud pub, I would recommend this place for groups of friends and other large gathering :) Also, they allow dogs... Sadly I didn't know this beforehand, otherwise I would have brought mine. read more

Nice bar, with a great selection of draft ales. Really friendly staff and a great menu. The only problem was (which is a bit of a biggie) the Sunday roast I was so looking forward to was kind of cold! I mean the veg were hot but the meat was just not hot enough unfortunately. Shame, I assume this was something to do with it being 8pm and the place being really full but if you claim to serve a roast till 10pm on a Sunday, then...I'd be willing to give it another go though and see if we can get them up to 4 stars as everything else was good! Whenever I visit my friend in Clapham, we always tend to visit The Sun pub located in the Old Town. It is definitely at its best during the summer months. Despite coming here on a fairly regular basis, I'm not absolutely sure why as it isn't the most charismatic of places but is generally a nice pub. It has a large crescent shaped bar in the centre which means that you get served pretty quickly which is certainly a bonus. If you are a beer lover, you will only find the standards - nothing exotic or unusual. The pub has a good, friendly atmosphere and I have never spotted any fighting or trouble despite getting crowded in the summer months. Definitely get yourself down here when the sun is shining as they hold BBQ's which are great value and good fun. read more

Situated in the Old Town right by the wonderful common is The Sun, a bog-standard, slightly garish pub which, whilst not doing anything particularly amazing, does what it does do very well! The bar is undoubtedly a crowd puller during sunnier climes when the local parks are filled with people having illegal barbecues, copping off and generally soaking up the UV whilst they can. Being Britain this goes hand in hand with drinking hence why this little establishment often becomes the first port of call for many small groups who are adequately catered for. Prices are reasonable, though if it's really sunny just go to the shop next door and get a can or two, and overall it's one of those bars that is only as good as the people you're with. read more

Good atmosphere, popular trendy pub attracting a nice looking crowd of happy funsters - never gives the feeling of being a grotty beer hole that many pubs descend to over time. Not to say that the Sun is as popular as past times (might just be the state of things but do remember paying £25 for NY ticket a few years ago - although did get full poached salmon banquet and weird ice structure dispensing Anisette down everyone's chin) - nowadays free entry for the celebrations but no freebies such as silly hats and streamers (go to the Prince of Wales across the road for that kind of chaotic fun). The Sun still boasts the weird upstairs painted room with couches and tables randomly strewn around - hedonistic debauchery waiting to happen - trouble is not quite enough hedonists for the critical mass needed to tip it into a truly indulgent crowd hell bent on the pursuit of sensual pleasures - just have to stick to a few Tiger beers and chill out on the deep cushions. Plenty of outside veranda space and covered benches below, with heaters, for the naughty smokers. Top floor function room useful for private parties and the general spaciousness of the building is nice with its various doors and staircases - can move around if get itchy feet and want to mingle. Good choice of beers - even Adnams from Suffolk to bring back fond memories of a distant time. Recommended. read more

Part of me has enormous fondness for this pub, and the other part of me loathes how busy it gets in the summer. As we are now coming to the hottest months of the year (supposedly, although there's not much evidence at the moment), the sun is about to become very very busy. It gets so rammed sometimes, that people sit on the road outside, which strikes me as a little desperate. However, if you can get in, there's a lovely covered outside area, and the service is quick and friendly, with the usual selection of ales and spirits, and it's got about the best atmosphere around. read more

The Sun in Clapham is probably one of the best pubs in the area. Cracking menu - I can highly recommend the pork belly (soft meat, mounds of mashed potatoes and drowning in gravy. Lovely!). Plenty of interesting Ales to try here and an extensive wine list. They also run a rather good pub quiz on Sunday nights. Can they improve? Yes. The Sun isn't perfect, and i think if they could ensure real ales are restocked promptly (you often see pumps that have run out of the good stuff) + work on customer service a bit (the Sunday lunch service felt quite disorganized) they would graduate to 5 stars. read more

I've been a fairly regular drinking in The Sun over the past few months, I'm not sure why we always end up drinking here. It has a large crescent shaped bar in the centre of the bar - you get served pretty quickly, usual beers available here, nothing out of the ordinary. The pub has a good, friendly atmosphere, I've never witnessed any trouble. The Sun gets pretty busy at weekends, especially in the summer as the crowds are drawn to the beer garden. I've heard good things about the BBQs, but not yet had the chance to try them myself. read more

I went to that place on a Saturday night. I arrived at about 10:30 and the place was completely packed, both at its lovely terrace and inside. There is no music outside (I suppose it's not allowed to) and the volume of the music inside was low. I liked the music and the place in general. The only problem is that they have a serious staffing problem, as we waited for about half an hour in-front of the bar to get served - with the three bartenders trying madly to cope with the orders. Of course don't even think of someone cleaning the tables On the other hand there are reasons why this place is so popular. Lovely terrace, nice music - in a volume level that you can actually chat with your company. P.S. The selection of beers it's also not very good - they had about 4-5 drafts and no Guinness (grr:) read more

I've been here a couple of times and quite like the place, but have also had two very different experiences. The first time I came here was with a friend for a roast on Sunday. The tables get booked up very easily, so it's worth booking in advance. The roast itself was one of the cheapest in the area, but absolutely lovely. Great portion size, hot and lots of gravy! I would recommend the roast wholeheartedly. The last time I came was last Saturday with a friend, as it was one of the only places in Clapham we could find a place at 7.30pm. We ate and had couple of pints upstairs where the atmosphere was great. It's reasonably priced as well, and the decor is nice so I enjoyed the evening. However, there are a couple of things I disliked on both occasions. Firstly I had a crumble that was cold. COLD. It took forever to arrive, but it was so cold I'm pretty sure it was purposely cold, which is SO WRONG!! Their regular food portions are also a tad on the small side. Secondly, there always seems to be a lack of floor staff, and the poor girl who served us on Saturday was pretty much running and clearing the whole top floor on her own. Again, it's another safe bet place. Ticks all the boxes for an enjoyable night with little fuss. read more

Came here for a late Sunday lunch and the place was very full - hard to grab a seat inside, though we found a table eventually. There is outdoor seating as well. As for food, my fish & chips were delish! My friend ordered a pie and found it to be mediocre, she was disappointed that it didn't have any cheese on top. The Sunday roasts that everyone was ordering around me looked yummy. Overall, a nice pub to try out traditional British pub food and schmooze with some friends on a lazy afternoon or evening. read more

Situated near the common and the old town area of Clapham is this sweet little pub. The gaudy blue and yellow colours of it's walls aside it's quite a nice venue, especially in the summer when you can pop in after a day of sunning yourself. Prices are fine, what you expect for the area and the clientele is mixed but mainly young. read more

I was drawn to their cheerful welcoming sign as I walked past, but was sadly let down. It's nice and all - clean, tidy, spacious, nicely decorated (well, maybe a bit too 'nice' if you know what I mean) - and it's got a beer garden, but otherwise has less charm, atmosphere or soul than the office of a stockbroker. Love this place! Enough said. It has some awesome beers on tap Sierra Nevada for one! The atmosphere is great, and the food they serve is nice. The Aussie guy and the BBQ is an amazing combo, serving delicious burgers and halloumi wraps at good prices. Just what you need after a few pints. The Beer garden is a good size with some good seating arrangements, but if your looking to get a seat get there early as it gets busy quickly in the evenings. Inside its spacious with good seating and chucky tables. Mind you when I'm inside it's a bit of a blur ordering more drinks, so cant really comment :) But all in all its well worth it. read more

The pub is in a great location, in the heart of Clapham Old Town, with a nice homey feel and super friendly staff. Unfortunately, our experience was a bit shaken by the lack of food available - we arrived around 3.30 (with a reservation) and had to wait to sit until about 4, then when we tried to order 3/4 of what we wanted they were out of.. however, the staff was very nice and apologetic, and explained that it had been an extremely busy afternoon. I had a vegetarian roast which was delicious and my friends had pork and beef and both said it was amazing as well, so we hope to be back to try what we wanted in the first place :) read more

With a great (and ever changing) range of ciders and ales on tap and knowledgeable staff, The Sun is a great pub to sit and sample British booze. The pub is a decent size with a central bar, a smaller room out back and a beer garden that is full to over flowing the minute the sun comes out. It's one of the only beer gardens in Clapham that gets all day sun (hence the name), and even in winter the outdoor area is cosy with the assistance of industrial outdoor heaters. Keep an eye out for their beer and cider 'festivals' where guest brews are added to the already generous selection on tap. read more

Only giving 1 str cause 0 doesn't seem to be an option Pub looked lovely from first glance - and we were quite keen on our friends choice for a Sunday pub quiz Except the pub quiz never happened Even though we asked several time and were reassured it would - we kind of gave up and hour after its start time We ordered the 3 for £11 starter which was dissapointing. The sweet potatoe wedges were burnt but tender and the edemame was alright. However the whitebait was unbreaded and tiny - properly looked like dried up cat food. We asked to exchange it and the chef and bar staff were rude and completely refused which was shocking to say the least. Our mates order was taken and turned back three times as thy kept running out of each item they wanted. Once the third choice Cesar salad came out the chicken had both skin and bones on it. The bathrooms had to Loo role or hand towels And the bar upstairs was unmanned most of the time although there were about 30 of us there waiting for the quiz All in all - a wash out We won't be coming back - which is a shame : ( read more
