You may think an exaggeration but after being in lockdown since March 6th that is what it seemed to us on our first weekend out. Immediately on walking in the staff were so friendly and inviting. Noticeable was the coronavirus precautions in place. This was more important to myself as 'highly vulnerable'. Here, I felt totally safe from the bug. A great pint and glass of wine in their garden area went down too well as we waited our food order. My partners smoked salmon and crayfish salad was, she says, delicious and very filling. As for my baked camembert, with all the trimmings of bread and crudities, was out of this world. An old English type of pub. Great staff, good food, friendly atmosphere. Cannot be beaten. My only negative is that it is too far from home to become my local.

He apologized for delay and personally delivered our drinks to us with a bonus drink for us to sample. With a welcoming demeanor he forewarned us of "Americanized" portion-size. Starters of baked Camembert, Spanish Prawns and Whitebait were delectable. I didn't even come close to finishing my unctuous well-plated cheesy selection. Our main dishes arrived. Portions were colossal as indicated. Indeed, I likened my minted lamb burger enough for a family of four. but more impressed by the stunningly prepared dish. My hosts order of Fish & Chips was equally generous and well prepared The Heidi - a pastry filled with sweet potato, goat cheese and spinach was disappointing. The menu disclosed its a Bristol made product which is likely the reason the pastry was dry and on the stale side. Choice of peas or baked beans somewhat pedestrian. Suggest making locally, in-house or deleting to offer. Our check was presented by Our host who clearly indicated concern that we'd had an enjoyable experience. It…read morehad been closed for a couple of months and has been closed 2 or 3 times over past couple years as owners/management, whatever changed with regular monotony. What a great surprise it has been totally refurbished and has a new clean fresh look which it badly needed. A small partition wall has been built one end of the bar to convert the area previously occupied by a pool table and dart board, into a restaurant space. To differentiate it from the main bar area it has been nicely decorated with some smart tables and a different lighting scheme. The lighting won't be to everyone's taste but it is different. The main bar has a new raised floor area in one corner and completely new furniture with a nice mix of sofas, stools and regular tables and chairs. There is a good selection of wines, spirits and bottled beers although the drafts are limited. Oddly no lager brand leader on tap but otherwise good selection. Freehold prices too so better than your normal chain house. Pleasant atmosphere and very welcoming hosts so well worth a visit. Also told there is a chef about to be appointed so new menu and hopefully top rated food about to become a feature. 12th April 2011 Eventually got back for a meal to try the new food menu. Meal was very nice and although menu quite restricted this it was explained was so that what they did offer was fresh and could be guaranteed to be of good standard. That works for me! Downside is that the wait whilst your meal is being prepared from scratch, is a bit longer but if you're not in a hurry it's a pleasant atmosphere in which to have a drink and a chat with friends and when the meal does come it is nicely presented, excellently prepared and very tasty. Worked out to roughly £25 per head for 3 courses coffee and wine so not bad prices either. All round very good value for an excellent meal.

Half the people there around a table in the conservatory area playing cards and that looked like fun. Would best describe this as an old traditional pub with low beamed ceilings and picturesque little windows. Well worn, lived in look to the place made it feel homely. No piped music either which was nice change. Good draught selection and wine for the ladies came in 30ml mini bottles which was nice and not to expensive either. The fact that it was so quiet on a Friday is a bit ominous and probably a reflection of the times so don't expect it to be around for long which would be a shame.

He could abuse one with style...and still serve an excellent pint of Breakspears, and his long suffering wife Liz, was a marvel in the kitchen. So we'd stopped in the overblown Hand & Flowers in Marlow that couldn't or wouldn't serve us a pint at 12.15...come back at 14.45 was their suggestion, and as it was full of BMW driving Buckinghamshire hedge fund types and their loud kids...we voted with our feet and left to find somewhere else. I then remembered reading about how the Stag & Huntsman had been given a make over...and my lord does it work! The place still has individual rooms to drink in, for food our two bowls of roast tomato soup hit the spot and the beer was excellent. I must also commend the staff in particular a young lady (Claire?) who was very competent, organising the staff, taking phone calls and generally keeping the who place toddling along. Her customer care skills in person or on the phone got a 10/10. We sat, supped and relaxed for a couple of hours reading the Saturday papers, and we left wishing that the US could do pubs.....but it can't! The beer is always well kept and the friendly staff serve good quality and reasonably priced traditional pub grub. They tend to expect the place to be half empty so, if there's a group of you turning up phone ahead - otherwise you may well find that they've run out of food. The setting is tranquil and relaxed and you can easily find minutes turning into hours as you chill out in the garden. Well worth a visit. Why not walk there from Henley, then plod down to Mill end and get the bus back.
