I was up at Yale for business, and they put us up at the "best hotel in New Haven." Key emphasis here is the phrase "in New Haven." If you asked me to use a piece of literature to describe The Study at Yale, it would be "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," except instead of everything being justttt right, everything was just mediocre-- not too terrible, not too great-- justttt fiiiine. The bed was fine-- not too hard, not too soft. The bathroom was fine, too-- not luxurious, not quite minimalist, not too large, not too small. The room generally was fine-- not classic, not modern-- in fact, very serviceable, a little reminiscent of a dorm. The lobby was a little more than fine and is, in my opinion, the best part of The Study (other than its ideal location). Meant to evoke a study, there are desks, couches, coffee tables, books, and a coffee bar. The atmosphere is relaxing and cozy and studious, exactly what you'd think of Yale. The service was a little less than fine: there was no breakfast card in my room, though a colleague's breakfast call at 7:00 AM never came (and there is nothing more disappointing than failing to wake up to the smell of bacon and, in fact, missing your train altogether), so perhaps I should be grateful it was missing. The receptionist working the front desk in the morning was less than helpful and far from friendly, though I thankfully just barely managed to make my train (no thanks to her). The Study is a fine hotel, but "fine" in the sense of "okay" and certainly not in the sense of high-end or amazing. It may very well be the best hotel in New Haven, but it just doesn't even begin to stack up against other similarly priced and rated hotels in cities like Boston, Chicago, and New York. If there were any other viable options in New Haven, I, like Goldilocks, would prefer to open the door, run out, and never return to The Study again. read more

This is simply a superb hotel. I already can't wait to stay here again, but that means I will have to come up with a reason to go back to New Haven. Well, there's Yale. Hmmm... Located across the street from the Yale School of Art and a short walk from the School of Drama, the Center for British Art and other Yale goodies, the Study at Yale is a modern, comfortable hotel for the bookworm who desires a beautiful place to stay. It is within reasonable walking distance of the New Haven-State Street MetroNorth station, although not from New Haven-Union Station - you'll have to take a cab or the bus. Those who are driving to the hotel can park in the garage next to the hotel, as there is no readily available street parking. From the bookshelves in the lobby and the small selection of offerings from The Strand for sale - proceeds go to support reading programs in New Haven - the entire hotel is set up to appeal to those who love all things bookish, and who enjoy staying at quality hotels. Rooms here are nicely appointed. I stayed in a room with a great king-sized bed and a view overlooking busy Chapel Street. The bed was a nice, soft featherbed with comfortable pillows and covers, as well as a nice blanket at the foot. It had "The Study at Yale" embroidered across it, which I thought was a nice touch. Other items emblazoned with the "Study" logo include the notepaper and freshly-sharpened pencils on the desk, which stocks free maps of the Yale campus and a list of cultural events taking place in the area, as well as a bookmark and a postcard depicting - what else? - books. (You can mail it from the hotel, too. The front desk sells stamps.) My room included a surprisingly nice leather chair, an iPod docking station, free Wi-Fi and a lovely bathroom. There was no shower/tub combination to be found here. Instead, there was just a straight-up tiled shower with pretty glass doors. The housekeeping staff is also environmentally friendly and will only change the bath towels every couple of days unless you specifically request new ones, in order to cut down on the amount of water used in the laundering process. Who loves the earth? The Study at Yale, that's who! The hotel has an on-site restaurant, which I did not try, but I can attest to the quality of The Study's culinary offerings. Whoever is in charge of the kitchen at this hotel is doing a good job. The Study at Yale serves great corn chowder, for example, and I hate corn. Simply put, this hotel is a gem. The staff is gracious and were helpful in clearing up a payment issue I had prior to the checkout process, and they want to ensure that their guests have a comfortable stay. After all, nothing says "welcome" like the jar of cookies at the front desk! If you need to take home a memento, pick up one of the handsome mugs printed with "The Study at Yale," which are on sale in the lobby for $7. While the staff wraps your purchase, contemplate the art on the walls created by Yale students, and plot your next return to The Study. read more

When we pulled up to The Study, a guy approached our car and asked if we were staying at the hotel. He was so schlubby and laid-back that I literally looked him up and down to make sure he was actually a hotel employee before I answered and gave him the car keys. He did have on a hat and a polo with the hotel's logo, but it was a really crummy first impression. We asked if our car was okay where it was parked, and he literally just stared at us. Things got better as we checked in. The lobby was full of activity with people chatting, reading, getting beverages from the drink kiosk, and heading into and out of Heirloom, the restaurant on the first floor. Our room was comfortable and spacious with an awesome view of the city and a window that ran the length of the bedroom and bathroom so you could see it from just about anywhere. Speaking of the bathroom, it was amazing! There's a separate room for the toilet, and the stand-up shower had great pressure and fantastic toiletries. I also appreciated the hair dryer since I'm a light packer and the free WiFi since I'm addicted to technology. Most of the people staying at the hotel seemed to be there on business and were pretty dressed up. The fella and I were there for pleasure and dressed super casual, so there were a few times I didn't feel chi chi enough to be there... causality of the location, I suppose! read more

I stayed at The Study for two nights and was delighted by the place. It has a swanky, "W" kind of a feel to it, but with its own distinctive charm. I loved the leather chairs, the bookshelves and the friendly vibe in the lobby. The staff were friendly, chatty and offered top notch service. They even had free tickets to some of the "art and idea" festival events for guests - so I enjoyed a jazz concert over at the Law school courtyard and saved myself 30 beans. Even more amazingly, one of the lovely ladies at the front desk knew about a gluten free bakery in the area! The rooms have comfy beds, and a great bathroom. The soap/shampoo/conditioner/lotion are high end and smell and feel great - something a lot of hotels cut corners on anymore. And, there's a very Ivy league blue and white seersucker robe for use ... which admittedly made me laugh. Be sure and ask for a room with a campus view because you really can see a lot of Yale from that side of the building. Only odd things about the place - no coffee makers in the rooms, and no ice on the individual floors. You have to ask to have ice sent up. A definite gem in New Haven, and a welcome addition to the area. You need to check this place out! If I am back and want downtown accomodations, I'll be calling The Study! read more

This hotel feels very boutique like. The finish is modern yet simple. The room was clean and spacious. This time the view from our room was of campus which was beautiful. Whilst on a previous stay we were on the road side which was a little noisier. However, the hotel does lack some desired features such as sockets by the bed, perhaps a fridge to keep cool all the left overs you have from all the lovely restaurants and most importantly just access to hot boiling drinking water either by putting a kettle in the room or by having something in the lobby. Also I just want to add that the linen cover on the duvet did become a nuisance. So as unhygienic as it was, we did end up just taking it off, just as I imagine occupants before us have done. Ewwwww! This is really the only quality place to stay in New Haven. The Omni is old and needs update. The Courtyard is full of loud families. The Study is chill, cool and modern, with great service. My husband and I love the look of the rooms and we enjoy the big bright windows, free wifi, nice lobby to hang with magazines provided, the great leather chair to sink into. We made a reservation last minute over the holidays after having to suddenly leave a terrible Airbnb situation. We were in town to see my family, including my mother, who was recovering from serious surgery at Yale New Haven. From the first phone call, the staff at the Study were a dream. The room overlooking the Yale campus was beautiful and the whole building was thoughtfully designed. The COVID precautions were extraordinary (and I'm very cautious). The service was impeccable overall. All of our needs were met effortlessly, including specific requests like a small fridge brought to the room and scotch tape for wrapping presents. My fiancee, my dog Luna, and I all felt well taken care of throughout our visit. The front desk staff was professional, warm, and attentive. Stayed here for one Saturday night. We had a great stay, really cool lobby and theme. The rooms are fairly minimalist, but I think that's what they were going for. Really cool, boutiquey themed hotel. It's also fairly close to campus and right in the middle of the Yale campus area. Great, helpful staff. I have stayed at The Study on a couple of occasions while guest speaking at the University. I have always found the staff and the room as pleasant and helpful. The rooms are very spacious and have a large window facing desk which was great for any work related needs. It is centrally located to the campus. I highly recommend you stay that this hotel. We received an upgrade upon arrival and the valet service was excellent. Stayed here before Christmas and I have to say, it is a very nice hotel! Im not surprised James Franco stays here when he is in town and not studying hard at Yale. The rooms are large and spacious, and really do give off a "study" feel-ie: Leather arm chair, floating writing desk stocked with pens and a notepad, and comfortable bath robes. The King bed was HUGE and so comfortable. The shower was large and modern, as was the whole bathroom. It felt like an IKEA show room, with personality. One of my favorite features? The black out -pull down window covers. Built into the side of the wall, the morning light has no chance of entering the room until you decide its time. This led to a late morning (which is okay because they have late check out -12:00! Every hotel should have this! ) The staff was friendly and on call at all times. It was clean and modern, and I totally felt at home and comfortable while staying here. It may be on the more expensive side for a New Haven stay, but being walking distance to Miyas, Ruthies, and other local hot spots, its absolutely worth it. read more

I stayed in a 2 bed room during a visiting weekend. The BEST hotel I've stayed at. No matter where you look, it looks high end and modern. Instead of the normal card key that you have to swipe to get into your room, you get to use a card with RFID, so you don't even have to take your card out of your wallet. The view is fantastic; I love the 2 types of shades. The bathroom is awesome! The shower is really modern, there's a cool green nightlight in there, and you get to use a robe! I also appreciate the people working there. There's a doorman and someone who brings up whatever you need if you call the front desk. This is the place to stay while at Yale. read more

When I entered this hotel I had felt so good. We were on our fun thanksgiving road trip. I just wanted to enjoy the college-town, relax, and catch up on sleep..when we got up in the morning , we woke up with bite marks. Yikes.. All over, itchy.. Being in the healthcare profession I knew that those were bed bugs bites... We brought the issue up with the management who promised to take care of the issue. We weren't looking for anything, just asking them to clean and be ready for the next set of guests, we were promised that they would call us with the information after they check. No one called or answered our calls. We took it upto the public health and higher authorities after which they called to say sorry that we were ignored. In summary. Bed bugs...please don't waste your money or ruin your vacation/ sleep at this hotel. One week later we were still freaking out and applying medications on our bites read more

This past year, I held our global conference at the Study. We were a little concerned about the amount of space for a large amount of people (up to 70 attendees) and whether we the hotel would be prepared. There was enough space, and the conference staff were absolutely prepared. There are about 4-5 rooms, including a large room that thankfully just held the 70 people that we had attending. Another 10 or 15 people and it would have been too big. The staff was phenomenal. We had a number of times when we required the rooms to be rearranged, and the staff was completely on top of it. Also, they cleaned up our mess after lunch timely. My expectations for the food was low, as conference food is typically lackluster. The Study blew me away. The lunches were not just normal fare, and it wasn't the really heavy stuff you sometimes get at conferences. They had creative wraps and salads, as well as a soup selection. In addition, we had some vegetarians, and they had a veg dish each day which was greatly appreciated. The hotel has a bit of a European flare, and our foreign visitors love staying here. The restaurant is excellent, and the service is wonderful. It is really very difficult for a hotel to exceed expectations for a conference with many people from different parts of the world, but The Study succeeded. I know New Haven well, having lived there for five years. This is THE place to stay. The Omni seems to retain its monopoly on the higher-end hotel market in the city, but The Study is vastly superior--unless you happen to prefer tacky faux opulence, bad value, and generic everything. The Study is decorated in excellent taste and designed with presiding concern for functionality and comfort. Staying there was easy, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing. The room was great, the service was great, the workout facilities were good, and the free morning coffee in the lobby was nice and strong. If you're looking for a hotel in New Haven and aren't simply seeking the lowest possible price, this is the place to go, no question. It even makes New Haven seem like a fun destination spot for a weekend--you could have a lovely time staying at the Study and visiting the Yale museums and/or the Rep. read more

Located in probably the most ideal spot at Yale, the Study is a fabulous hotel. The rooms are clean and spacious. The staff is very friendly. The hotel restaurant is excellent and there are many restaurants to choose from right outside the hotel. The lobby has an open layout with desks, couches and a coffee bar to hang out and work. I really give the Study 4.5 stars. I think the hotel is great. We have been staying at least once a month for the past two years. Recently we have been staying once a week. The staff are wonderful and friendly. They have a very small gym, but have just received a sponsorship by Yale's Payne Whitney Gym, so guests may use that gym! The rooms are clean and have a great view of the Yale campus. The beds are extremely comfortable. There is not much shopping in the area, but New Haven has some fantastic restaurants. read more

Quality hotel, very swanky and modern with a great decor theme. The only problem we found was that the bathroom was a bit on the smaller side, with no counterspace at all. I've stayed at this hotel two times in the past two years and have eaten at the restaurant, Heirloom, a number of times. This is definitely the best hotel to stay at if you are in New Haven for any reason to do with Yale. It is pretty centrally located to undergrad campuses, the law school, it's right across the art school, very close to the architecture and drama schools. It's a bit of a longer walk to the med school, which can be annoying in the cold, but the luxury at The Study make it worth it. The lobby is gorgeously decorated with books, magazines, newspapers, and comfortable chairs, all with a modern feel. The rooms are spacious, modern, clean, and comfortable. The entire hotel has a great ambience and makes it easy to relax. The one negative I have is the lack of options on the restaurant and room service menu. I've eaten there a few times and ordered room service twice, and there never seems to be anything new, particularly if you're looking for healthier options. The menu is also fairly pricey, so you may be better off eating outside the hotel. read more
