This was our first visit since spring, and the biggest change we noticed was the menu. It's been expanded with more options, which is great--but let's be honest, when you already have a favorite, change doesn't stand much of a chance. I stuck with my go-to: the Chicken Club. Once again, it delivered. One of the best chicken sandwiches you'll find in Tuscaloosa lives right under this roof, crispy, flavorful, and stacked just right. No regrets. No notes. The only evidence left behind was a clean plate and a messy napkin. My wife went with the Crispy Fish Sandwich, and it was equally impressive. If these sandwiches don't reach down and tickle your tummy, nothing will. That's just science. Avenue Pub is usually buzzing wall-to-wall, but thanks to some less-than-cooperative weather, we were greeted by a lighter crowd at first. That didn't last long. As the afternoon rolled on, the place steadily filled up, always a good sign. Great food, a relaxed atmosphere, and consistently solid execution make Avenue Pub a dependable win. That said, there's a reason for the crowd--DePalma's consistently delivers good Italian eats. The old building still carries plenty of character, with wine bottles lining the walls and the nostalgic bar where an old pharmacy once served Coke and a smile. These days, instead of sodas and prescriptions, they're rolling dough and making pasta behind that same bar, and I'd say that's a pretty solid upgrade. We started with the stuffed mushrooms, which were outstanding. When we finished, the plate was so clean you could've put it back in the cabinet--only a few grains of salt remained as evidence they were ever there. For my meal, I ordered the pine nut-crusted salmon along with a Caesar salad. It was my first time having their salmon, and it definitely won't be my last. The dish was excellent--well-prepared, flavorful, and proof that stepping outside your usual order at DePalma's can pay off. I've eaten here many times over the years and can honestly say I've never had a bad experience. Great food, great service, and great company--even the Kentucky fans who made the trip down to watch their beloved Cats get smacked around on the hardwood. Oasis is a tiny little building in rural Cottondale, just a short drive outside of Tuscaloosa. It's a little loud, a little grungy, and a little intimidating to a non-regular...but you should try it! The food was more or less ready for me when I got there -- I got there before the 20 minutes they told me was up, so I don't count my few minutes waiting as on them. The cashier was a little gruff at first but we warmed to each other after joking about how much ranch I wanted. One of the patrons offered me a seat while I was waiting, which was really nice and put me at ease. My food was still hot by the time I got home. Oasis KNOWS how to make a good hamburger. The bun was buttered and crispy around the edges, the burger was thick and juicy, and they put the perfect amount of ketchup on top. The bacon was a little underdone for my taste, but I like mine very crispy. The fries were just standard crinkle cut...but they were elevated to delicious after being dunked in their house-made buttermilk ranch. I'd say this is probably the best burger in the T-town area -- better than The Avenue Pub, which I've often seen it in competition with. At least, that's my assessment.
