A Glasgow institution, The Stand is a great little comedy club that is far superior to its big name competitors. Hidden away at the end of Woodland's Road, it's a great place to go for an evening of lager and laughs, with greats such as Frankie Boyle being a particular favourite here. I first visited The Stand on my first date with my fellow; the perfect combination of drinks in a dimly lit cavern, with conversation coaxing comedy thrown in to make a thoroughly enjoyable evening. At only a couple of quid entry fee, The Stand is a great place for an evening out in the west end, to enjoy some of the best comedy around from some of the funniest underground talent Glasgow has to offer.

Enterteasement, 13 October 2018…read more Naughty but oh so nice Kitsch; Art, objects, or design considered to be in poor taste because of excessive garishness or sentimentality, but sometimes appreciated in an ironic or knowing way. (Oxford Dictionary) Well this was not your normal Saturday night variety show that's for sure and I have to confess all the better for it. On the second Saturday of every month a group of like-minded fans gather in the downstairs room of the Admiral Bar for a unique evening of fun. All sounds just a little bit err dodgy but fear not it is all in the best possible taste! This is Burlesque. This is comic and this is Kitsch and all with a little sprinkling of magic. Well what is enterteasement. Its magic its funny and just a little bit risqué. The evening is a mix of great magic, funny comedians and dancing girls. Maybe it's best to leave the dancing 'till later well 'till after the watershed at least. This Evenings show kicked off with our hostess for the evening Jay Lafferty. Clad all in green with flowing ginger locks my first thought she was a refugee from Coatbridge but that is doing her a grave disservice. Here is a witty and charming lady who brilliantly worked the room with quick one liners and friendly chat before clearing the way for amazing Chris Dinwoodie. His magical talents really do defy belief. Being ten feet from his show and thinking I know how he is going to do this loaded my preconceptions of yet another magic act. Oh, how wrong could I be. Chris is a multi-award-winning act and despite being so close I quite simply couldn't see how he was doing his thing. Well and truly amazed it was now turn for the dancing girls. First, I should clear up a few more pre-conceptions. This is not a strip show or a stag night, in fact the audience on this evening was probably more female than male! It is also couple friendly. What it was however was a fun kitsch pastiche of a wonderful bygone era. Definitely more Betty Paige than Strictly both girls strutted the stuff with style elegance and a tongue fixed firmly in their cheek. The two girls, Millie Dollar and Arielle Firecracker (maybe not their real names) hail from Liverpool and have performed internationally so this is no second-rate show but the art of burlesque at its peak. The girls did two routines over the two halves of the show and both were entertaining and fun. Tony Goodall opened the second act with guitar in hand. Tony performs his self-penned comic tunes while conversing with the audience and being quite simply a very funny guy. The highlight of his turn was however was a wonderful reworking of a Garry Barlow hit. I can say no more for fear of spoiling a great piece of comedy but rather will say it had me in tears. After the girls second dances it was time for tonight's headline act Australian Comic Ro Campbell. I had never seen Ro' before but plan to see him again. Having lived in Scotland for fifteen years he is wonderfully able to compare and contrast live in both countries. This he does with wit, sharp observations and some amazingly funny lines. The question then is would I recommend Enterteasement and would I go back. Hell yeah! This for me was a perfect night out. Great magic even if I would normally admit to not being a fan. Fantastic comedy with only top-class acts, no look warm newbies still trying to find their way, but the cream of the Scottish Comedy Circuit. All this and those amazing dancing girls. There is nothing else like Enterteasement and you will need to be quick to get your tickets for the next gig but it really is a wonderful night out. Err best not to bring the kids though.

Last night we attended our first Enterteasement performance and had a fun night. They mainly…read moremarket the burlesque for their shows, so we were surprised to get so much comedy acts. The comedy was not bad but also not belly achingly funny either. The main MC of the show who opened and closed was probably the best part. He was actually funny with a natural stage presence and knew how to pull the audience in. There also was a novice "magic show" and two different comedians doing their segments. But what it really boils down to is, "how good was the main product they were selling?" They highlight the burlesque component and this was supposed to be the main flair. What we got were two women each with two separate segments doing a 2-3 min bit. It was fun but in all honesty we were expecting something better. It was very average women who rather quite directly went into taking off their clothes rather than play the audience more. The movements were cute and simple. We couldn't help but want more professional burlesque for that allure and enticement. Burlesque was perfectly under average. The idea for a eclectic mix of all the comprising acts is a great one. The main mistake though is that they sell the night with a big focus on the burlesque. So for that, you go in expecting something professional and eye catching.. which was not the case. If you go in expecting real burlesque you will be disappointed, but go in expecting just a fun mix of different sorts of acts and you will have a fun time. I would say comedy parts are 50-60% of the entire night. We did have a good night, but if we wanted to do a comedy night we would have gone to the comedy stand. The company can do with focusing more on their main attraction and upping the ante on their burlesque.

Oh no I didn't! Oh yes I did! Yup it was that time of year again, panto time!! Yaaaay!…read more To be honest I haven't been to a panto in a long time well the last one I actually starred in as a good fairy back in 2006 in Blantyre. It was a last minute thing when my friend text to say they had some spare tickets to see Snow White. Now this wasn't just going with friends, oh no, this was going with half the brownies and guides from High Blantyre. Yelp! So when heading down to Blantyre train station it had been taken over by lots of little girls in yellow hats. What a sight?! So we made it to Glasgow, alighting at Anderston station, which therefore makes it only a 10min walk up to The Kings. So with a bunch of excited girls, I think I may have reached their level by now. Our seats were in the Gods, the Gallery if you want to be technical. Eep! Not my favourite part of the theatre but it's the cheap seats of the theatre. So the entrance is at the side of the building. After several flights of what felt like never ending stairs we made it to the top. We then headed down the aisle steps to our seats at a 45 degree angle to keep yourself upright, as it's soooooo steep. The Kings is a beautiful theatre that's many many years old. I always enjoy going but I normally pay a little bit more to get a better seat, normally Upper or Grand Circle, sometimes Stalls depending on the prices. One day I'll be I'll in the box seats. The stage is large and the sets were amazing. The costumes were stunning, so much detail from the principles characters right down to the chorus and dancers. The actors did a fine job and I did have a wee sigh of how much I do miss performing in the ol' pantoland. I think sitting in with the kids made it even more fun. I didn't realise though that Darius was in it though. Meh! Not a fan and could they mention Pop Idol, Colourblind, or Pop Star to Opera Star anymore times?! Shoooosh! Gavin Mitchell did a great job, he tastefully mentioned Gerald Kelly in the show and they dedicated the show at then end and had a minute clapping. The toilets were a bit of a nightmare though, as it's an old building it doesn't have as many toilets. The gents toilets were out of order at first so they had made the ladies a temporary gents. Then out of the two ladies toilets one was broken. So little girls being little girls, (whiny voice) "I need the toilet.", one goes they all go. So the queue went up the stairwell backing up to the entrance to the Gods. So a poor member of staff had to keep filling up the cistern with a bucket of water to get the other toilet working. At least the staff tried. Over all it was a great day out and The Kings always guarentees to have great shows on. I'm just waiting for Wicked to come to Glasgow. Hurry up London, fly up that Wicked Witch of West to us.

We dropped by one Tuesday night and ordered a double Southern Comfort and coke and a bottle of Kopparberg. This came to £9.10, which was waaaay more than we had expected. We took a seat in front of the giant football screen to recover from the shock. Up to the minute rock music plays in here, at a comfortable level to talk over. On nice afternoons, the big windows slide open to let the air circulate and provide a nice atmosphere, linking the indoor seating to the outdoor. Live bands play on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The cocktail menu is quite extensive and cocktails are named after rock classics like Purple Haze and Desperado (gotta love The Eagles!!) At £5.95 for the least expensive though, they don't come cheap. The stripped floorboards and warehouse setting further lend to the rocky atmosphere. A small selection of bar bites is available, most intriguingly the "Good Olives" at £1.95 and the "Even Better Olives" also priced at £1.95. Hmmm...what?

Our reservations were for 8:30pm, because it was for dinner and a show, for that night we had a 5 course meal, it was canapés with Champagne, French onion soup with gruyere crouton, salmon tartar, roast fillet of Aberdeen Angus Beef with slow roasted tomatoes, Portobello mushroom, onion ring stack, red wine sauce & béarnaise, Baked Alaska, and ended with a cheese board. The meal was delish, and really for being 5 courses, the severing sizes of everything was more than I expected, I had a nice size of the Aberdeen Beef, maybe almost a solid 8 ounces. Everything was prepared perfectly and had great flavor, this was an excellent 5 course meal! I was lucky enough to be my friends plus one, so didn't need to pay so even better. We arrived and we were escorted to one of the big plush booths. As we were on the guest list we did not eat, so I can't comment on this. The decor is decadent and very cabaret. Lots of gold, black and leopard print. There is a stage in the middle with all the tables round it. There is table service, this adds to the glamor and makes you feel special. We ordered drinks that came quickly and the staff were all helpful and friendly. We arrived just in time for the entertainment, every week is different so it does vary. A few of the folk I was with tonight have been before and said that the line up tonight was especially good. The entertainment consisted of gymnasts, a guy using silks, a mind reader, sword swallower (was great but made me feel uneasy), can can dancers, burlesque, a singer (who we joined on stage for a dance at the end) a hula hoop girl, but my highlight was JC a guy who dresses up like Jesus and dances (it really needs to be seen, to fully get it) the compare was also hilarious and kept everything running smoothly. Dr Sketchy is a worldwide institution where people meet up to sketch Burlesque and Cabaret performers in an informal context. This event has been very popular in the likes of Brooklyn, but has been brought to Glasgow over the past couple of years, and our arts community is all the better for it! Events usually take place once every month on a Sunday afternoon in The Arches (hence why I have used this as the business address). It was founded by creative mastermind Louise Oliver, who has been prolific in creating a colourful, varied and welcoming Cabaret community across the city. She has successfully set up a number of companies in and around Glasgow that promote Cabaret, Burlesque and local theatre arts, to name but a few of her business ventures. Dr Sketchy brings together performing arts, life drawing classes and comedy, which makes for a killer combination. Tickets are around a fiver and everyone is welcome, from professional artists to beginners with crayons. Some of the work produced within the few hours of the class is outstanding, but you are not obligated to showcase your sketchbook at all. They run some fun competitions with a prize of a bottle of whisky or wine, but the atmosphere is very relaxed so you are encouraged to come along regardless of whether drawing is your forte or not. There's a bar if you would rather sip on a rum and observe the show if you don't fancy yourself as the next Monet. Every month the organisers arrange for new acts to come along from across the globe! There was an utterly gorgeous girl from London last time I was there whose Cabaret act was funny as well as sassy. There are some familiar faces who attend every month which gives this club a comfortable appeal, and shows that the guys involved in this scene have a great community spirit. It's very interactive and all are welcome to come along and try their hand. I had a great time when I was last there. I've seen five year olds who draw better than me, but since the guys are very laid back and accomodating I am welcome to bring my crayons. The next Lautrec I am not, but I know a good club when I see one, and Dr Sketchy's is it. I can honestly say that the work of Louise and her team have helped develop and enrich Glasgow's arts community.
