There is a unit dedicated to the kids, filled with toys, a flat screen tv showing children films and appropriate toilet facilities. This pub was built for lazy days indeed! It is now in the capable hands of a young couple called Derek and Lucy, in the last six months that they have been there, they have got Quiz Nights on Tuesdays and Killer Pool on Sundays and have the occassional Poker Nights. Derek is welcoming and Lucy although in the background is just as welcoming. After being a local there for a long time I was disgruntled when the big divorce was on and moved on to other places but I never say never to not give a place a second chance ......and boy am I glad. The crowd are a great mix and sometimes when you want to have a ball this is the place to go but also you can go in there and quietly mind your own and no-one will trouble you. If you think you are good at pool there are plenty of people to test you including Derek and at 50p a throw you can have a brain teaser of a game. There is a great Juke Box especially if you love the classics and again for a bargain 2.00 for 9 plays there is plenty to choose from. If darts is your game then again this is the place, there is a nice little side section for the dart board where if like me, no-one can see you hit everything but the board! Anybody walking in new will not feel out of the zone there is always someone to welcome you to the Talbot any time I have gone in there I always get into a conversation with someone else. There is a good crowd in there and no one gets slated for their opinions. If you need to stay a while in Acton The Talbot offers rooms and when it is so near over ground and under ground stations you can't go wrong. IT IS A FRONT ROOM WITH FRIENDS (old and new)!!!!!!

The town itself seems to be fairly dry by way of watering holes, since the main pub I've seen used to be on the bridge. Yesterday, as we went in search of a pint before my train, we noticed said pub had shutters up and a for sale sign - no more pub on the bridge. Fortunately we spotted the note, which directed us here, and after walking a few minutes past take aways and various other drab-looking shops, we found an alleyway. It was pretty much unlit, and led to a door, which gave little away as to what may be found inside. In fact, it was a little creepy. Fearing what we might discover inside, but committed at this point, we pushed in to find what looks like the entrance to an old hotel. A stair case ahead, another door to our left, and a room full of bric a brac, covered in sheets, to our right. Something out of Silent Hill, almost. We opened the second door to reveal a delightful hub of people, hidden away in their secret bar. You can't get more of a prohibition vibe than this, given the lack of drinking spots near by, and the hidden nature of the bar. Other places in London, and throughout the country, may try to affect the feel of being true hidden bars - but this place feels like the real deal. The room is huge, tall, and perhaps was once the dining area for the aforementioned hotel. (I could be way off, before its current incarnation it was a Conservative Club, but before that? My bet's on a hotel.) The wall by the bar is lined with Private Eye prints, the walls are half stripped of their faux wood wallpaper, the windows have bars, and the ceiling reveals a wooden floor above. It's unfinished, and it's perfect. The chandelier is something else. And it's not just the ancient décor that gives it its charm. The selection of ales is fantastic, with details as to what to expect the following week, the lagers are inspired, and the staff (the one lovely bar maid we encountered) are fantastic. (Krusovice and Kernel were noted, amongst others.) It may be the only place to drink in Catford, but it's not doing anything by halves. The seating is a mish mash of old lounge seats, mix and match tables, and there is a selection of books along the back wall. Each table even had fresh flowers atop them. Had I not been heading home, I could have easily stayed here for hours, talking, drinking, and definitely playing cards or chess. The price for a pint and a half was around a fiver. It's a charming place and, even better, they've a kitchen coming soon. I'd recommend it more than a stop off if you happen to be around. I'd go further and suggest you make the effort to find it.

Now I like places which are not sterile and straight out of the magazines, so yes this place ticks the box. It might be a little close to actually getting itself into trouble with the health & safety brigade. Now we booked our table in advance and we were punctual as ever, all was fine to this point. Now clearly Sundays are a popular day as the Sunday roast is said to be good. My issue is that if you know you are fully booked which they must have known as on the front door was a sign pointing out that there was no food available for walk-ins. We order a couple of people in our party went for starters which arrived in a reasonable time. After that it all went a little downhill. we waited patiently for our mains and a good 20 minutes after those who had starters had finished them we had not had any member of staff come to remove plates, check if everything was ok or even come and take further drinks orders. It got to the point where we had to go and look for them to enquire where our food was!! Thats not good, as you can see into the kitchen from the dinning area it was apparent to us that the kitchen is not big enough to cope with a full house, they also only had two members of staff working the floor, hence the lengthy wait for everything, except the bill that is!! After we had enquired about our food there was another lengthy wait, we were told 5 minutes but it felt more like 10/15minutes. When the food did eventually arrive it was not the best, carrots were a bit hard, not al dente, my Yorkshire pudding was over cooked, someone else's potatoes were under cooked, the saving grace at least the beef was well cooked. When we had finished and asked for the bill which was the quickest thing to arrive all afternoon, when they asked us the obligatory question "how was everything" we commented about the wait and everything else . At this point, in most establishments, something would have been taken off the bill for all the delays and food issues, nope the waitress just smiled and said sorry about the wait!! Now perhaps they were having a bad day, which is not my issue, as a customer I expect a certain level of service, while I can see others have given 4 & even 5 stars for the establishment I cannot in good conscience give anymore than 2.

My husband ordered the ham special pizza of the day (a bit pricey around £11 for a pie) and I ordered the Stelvio (veg): mascarpone, courgette, garlic, smoked scamorza cheese, oregano for £8.5. It took a while for a waitress to come around to take out orders, even with the sparse people seated in the restaurant, which should have been an indicator how service was going to be. The pizza came relatively quickly even though our soft drinks didn't. I found my pizza to be very good; good dough texture of firmness and chewiness and enough spread of toppings to please me although could have done some more dabs of the smoked cheese. Service continued to be poor; we finished our pizzas and waited quite a while for a waitress to come take the dishes away. We actually had to flag someone down as it seemed no one would swing by. I also ordered the superfood salad (white bean hummus, avo, quinoa, beetroot, charred corn and fennel slaw) for takeaway and devoured it later for dinner. The taste is phenomenal; rich, savoury tastes with all the combinations. On a down side, I actually had to order it twice it bc the first waitress forgot and there was a shift change. When it came time to pay, we explained our service concerns to the manager and he apologized and gave us £10 off. A star just for that!
