The Ploughman is a traditional style pub serving traditional pub meals with a focus on local…read moresuppliers. The dining area was a good size but not ideal for larger groups. We were a party of 14 with a high chair for our daughter and we did feel a little squeezed in and I don't think they could have taken a party bigger than ours due to the layout of the space. The decor is very old pub feeling with dark woods, dark carpets and twee trinkets dotted around the room and on the walls. If you're after a modern gastro-pub experience, you won't find it here! The food itself was a bit of a mixed bag. I chose Oriental Prawns for starter and they were quite obviously bought in ready made and frozen and weren't anything spectacular, you can get equally good (or better) from the freezer cabinet of your local supermarket. They were served with a chilli sauce which was tasty, but straight from a bottle so you would expect it to taste good and a side salad which came with no dressing at all, my pet hate when I go out to eat. There nothing worse than a pile of dry salad just dumped on the side of a plate with no thought, it's not too much of a chore to add a little drizzle of olive oil at the very least. The main course was a Jekyll and Hyde type dish and is a good snapshot of the overall dining experience. I ordered steak au poivre cooked medium and it genuinely was one of the nicest pieces of meat that I've had in a while. They list their local suppliers on the menu and I'm wishing I had taken a note of the butcher that the steak came from as it was excellent. The pepper sauce was plentiful and delicious, but again I suspect that it came from a jar/packet and that may be the reason. All the mains come with a choice of chips or potatoes and veg and again are of the frozen variety. This is a real shame as they let down what would otherwise have been an excellent dish. It was reasonably priced at £17, but for that I'd be expecting more than opening a bag of frozen chips and deep frying them. The service was very good, friendly staff who couldn't have done more to help us and they were quick and efficient without being intrusive at all. Overall, the meal here was ok. The food that was cooked from fresh was delicious, but let down be pre-prepared sides. The place itself is a little dated with perhaps the most uncomfortable seats I've sat on in a while, but for a reasonably priced meal with family, it was perfectly acceptable.

The menu, the meal, the service was faultless and we all had the same roast rib of Scotch beef. However, the stereophonic screaming of babies and toddlers was unbearable. I could see from the glances of other customers that we were not the only ones who felt that it was rather irritating. I have three grown children but I would never have taken them to a more upmarket restaurant for lunch if they were prone to that behaviour. I am sure the parents were struggling and possibly felt some embarrassment and could not enjoy their meals. There is absolutely nothing wrong with small children screaming, but it was unexpected in a restaurant of such pleasant ambiance and food.

Unusual in its setting (you hardly know it is there), the atmosphere was bustling, the service friendly and the food great. A great variety in style of dishes we had one cauliflower pakora, a couple of haggis bonbons and a bar bun, followed by a burger, a lamb shank, halibut an d curry, followed by some nice desserts. A great place to visit.

Meh. Nice spot for a pint and quite the strange selection of food items (pizza, fish and chips, ice…read morecream). I don't know if it's trying to be American or what the deal is. Pick your table and head to the counter to order. Food is pretty cheap but average at best. It took a long time for food to come which seems to be normal while looking at the other reviews. There are other pubs and places to eat, you can skip this one.

Oh Archibald's. Wetherspoon's pubs are a push and a pull…read more You get great deals, adequate food for a good price, and they're usually pretty lively. But they're never as intimate or home-y, and half the charm of a British pub is that cozy, can't-get-it-anywhere-else sort of vibe. Archibald Simpson's is conveniently location at the end of Union street, and the building itself is pretty nice. There's plenty of room and different kinds of seating depending on your needs/party size. Usually I'd be in there with a group of friends so it was handy to have the big back booths that are bit off the main path so we could be loud and silly and take up space without causing a ruckus. I've had a couple meals there; they were edible and fine, if not memorable. I do have a soft spot for this place, I'll admit, as I happened to be going here with some friends the night my now-husband first asked me to be more than a friend ;) A good pub if you're doing the rounds or need a quick pint with friends before heading somewhere else nearby, but I wouldn't choose it as a destination in and of itself if you just want a one-pub-night.

Archibald Simpson - Devil's Backbone, the best IMHO of Wetherspoon's "add a drink" beer options with "club" meals. Solid IPA.
