This place is a little ways away from most of "the action", has plentiful on-site parking, and combines coffee shop + bakery + general store in one location. The store is relatively new to West Jefferson and opened within the last few years. It's family owned and operated, and the staff members who were working on the day of my visit could not have been lovelier. The only reason I'm not giving this place five stars is because I felt like the selection of merchandise in the general store was not as eclectic as most general stores I've visited. The majority of the merchandise either fell into what felt like a "live, laugh, love" version of a feminine / children's esthetic, or was downstairs in a section literally called "the man cave". With so many amazing local merchants and artists throughout the West Jefferson community, it would have been nice to see a few more options that fell between these two groups and were maybe a bit more neutral. While I very much enjoyed exploring the store and looking through everything, when it came time to actually purchase something for myself or to use as a gift, I really couldn't settle on anything that would be a good fit.

There is a decent amount of jewelry, kitchen items, holiday decor, and clothes (upstairs). The coffee shop downstairs is also a nice touch to the store-I recommend stopping in there first and drinking your coffee as you shop. There was plenty of parking and it was easy to locate. It's unique and separate from the rest of historic downtown West Jefferson which makes it an easy recommendation to anyone looking for gifts.

We drove on our road trip to Johnson City, Tennessee from our home near Winston-Salem. It was getting late so we noted the location and decided to stop on our return trip home when we anticipated we would have more time. We arrived in the early afternoon of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and after following the line of cars to the back parking lot, we were amazed to see how many people were there! The small front parking area was full and the much larger rear parking lot was almost full. We did not think it was possible that everyone was visiting the general store, partly because it looks much smaller from the outside. As we walked toward the rear porch entrance, there was a Boy Scout Troop making kettle corn with a large kettle, butter, sugar, salt and corn and stirring it with a big paddle. It smelled delicious and we knew we needed to buy some on our way back to the car. After entering the building, we could see the entire parking lot contained all those people inside the general store, it was very busy but it appeared they had an adequate amount of employees. Mast features outdoor gear, home decor, knives, shoes, clothing, gift related items and food. They also have a large barrel candy area. We picked up a few things we felt we could not live without. On our way out, we purchased a bag of the kettle corn from the Boy Scouts and enjoyed munching on it while also supporting a good cause. It was so delicious with the combination of butter and sugar. A definite treat that we hadn't eaten in a long time. The original store is a must stop if you are driving through the area. We also recommend stopping at any of their other locations as well. They have many items you may not find elsewhere.

Away from that small shoe building, half each for men and women, we went to the main building a seemingly turn of the century wooden floored building where there is a candy section and, yes, I bought some old time candy, which was $5.99 a pound as I recall. Lots of old time kitchen utensils, ceramic cookware, kid's toys, hunting and outdoor wear. Then to the main hiking and hiking shoes for men where they had some which were 25% off. Jim, a clerk, came up as I was looking around and politely asked if he could help me find something in the Keen shoes I was poking through. Told that I was looking for an 11 1/2 size, but there were no half sizes. As sometimes shoes can run a bit large he asked if I wanted to try on an 11 and he would go look for an 11 1/2 if the 11 would not fit. I had just determined that the 11 wasn't for me, and Jim came back. Now you know how I came to purchase my Keen Targee IV WP MEN, size 11.5 at 25% off. Checking us out was another friendly, chatty and efficient employee (as all of their folks are) named Rhonda. Like I said, you "just gotta" visit, and maybe spend a few bucks. We did!

They also have a little kitchen in the back where they offer sandwiches and scratch made biscuits and homemade breads, fried pies and a bunch of other stuff. There's no seating inside, there are some tables, rockin' chairs and benches outside if you want to sit and eat. From the kitchen I ordered a ham, egg & cheese biscuit and got a little container of their banana puddin'. The biscuit was great, the nanner puddin' was ok, I also got a couple of their no bake chocolate oatmeal cookies for the road which were awesome, they call them "Preachers Cookies" here, I always knew them as "Cow Patties"... really neat place.

It was barely controlled chaos in the store to say the least. It was a Saturday when I swung through, so all of the tourists from the Blue Ridge Parkway were stopping by for their tourist shopping fix. So I don't blame the chaos on the store so much as the tourists acting all rude and entitled, shoving their way around the store. I digress. The deli sandwich I had was very good, and made promptly. I also had a homemade brownie which had the perfect amount of sweetness and walnut ratio to it. I wanted to try the Possum Pie but just get the nerve up to ask what was in it. I mean it couldn't have been real possum could it? They do have limited outside tables. I was lucky enough to snag one but you may want to pick your food up here and then plan for a nice picnic on one of the parkways scenic pullouts.

When we invest in a floral arrangement whether as a gift for another, to decorate for company or just to beautify and freshen the house, we want something extra special, designed with love. I don't know about you but a formal arrangement that actually brings tears to your eyes is the rarest of rare. So many florists deliver commonplace arrangements that leave you wondering why you spent all that money. Well let me tell you, that was not my experience at Village Florist. Most recently I wanted the perfect bouquet for my mother's birthday and Julie, at Village Florist spent time with me so she would completely understand what I wanted. She patiently listened, asked questions and made recommendations. She delivered the most exquisite arrangement I have ever seen. When the arrangement was delivered to my mother she cried in awe and declared the same sentiment... it was the most beautiful arrangement she had ever seen!!! Julie is an amazing artist with extraordinary attention to detail. She created a masterpiece!!! From the bottom of my heart... if you see this review Julie, I can't thank you enough for your touch of genius and all the heart you put into the arrangement and all your arrangements!!!
