The decor is minimal but not at all austere despite it being a large space, mostly because it's all wood and subtle colours. Real napkins on the tables! Along the whole length of one wall is an amazing wooden shelving unit / dresser with drawers. It was discovered out in the garage when the new people opened the restaurant and was made for the general stores which is what this building had been when it first opened. There are fantastic lamps on the walls - incandescent bulbs with gorgeous twisty filaments in metal cages. Lovely. Anyway, the menu was small but unusual. Once we had seen the menu we decided to have a little more than a croissant! I chose scrambled eggs with chives and cream; my partner had charred mackerel with pickled cherries. There was not a lot when it arrived but it was delicious and with a gorgeous creamy texture. It came with slices of soda bread toast, griddles with olive oil. The combination was delicious. My partner loved his fish, which looked not far off raw and loved the pickled cherries too. As this had been so good we decided to try the wonderfully named Dirty, filthy cheesecake! So named because they mix in another pungent cheese. Today it was stinking bishop! When it arrived as a small portion with currants and grapes and a red wine reduction it was delicious. Very firm and dense and with a definite taste of something pungent lurking in the background. Unusual. We decided to finish with a latte each and agreed afterwards that it was a top class cup of coffee. Service was very friendly, the cakes on the counter looked great, the cocktails sounded extra special and Dan is a bit of a cocktail whizz by all accounts. Also, the wine list was individual and had obviously been chosen thoughtfully. Sadly, as we still had our early morning hats on we didn't feel wine was appropriate ... We were very impressed and would have loved a return visit but due to the press of the weekend it didn't happen.

The lamb we had was tender and tasty, with a lovely salsa verde. The fishcake was fresh if a little light on salmon. My only gripe was the gnocchi which was fried and terrible really. The rest excellent, a lovely chocolate dessert. Also the soda bread with brown butter was superb. Great price at £15 for two courses. I'd love to come back and get stuck into the wine list which looked great. Very nice.

Great patio to sit on during nice weather. We ordered the chocolate pancakes as well as the berry and cream and both were delish! Don't forget to try the chorizo.

Since then, we always look out for a Bills throughout the country on our travels. Three of us arrived, unreserved, for a table. OK, lets say we are 'oldies', and proud of it. The restaurant was heaving which is pleasing to see with this era of coronavirus. We were asked to wait while a table was cleared, cleaned and relaid. Meanwhile a younger couple with their family arrived and were shown immediately to a table, UPSTAIRS. Obviously, the young 'front of the house' lady had decided we couldn't have made it up the stairs. She was probably right and we were grateful. Within minutes our table was ready. A wonderfully comfortable booth. Our orders of full English, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and eggs Benedict were brilliant as was the coffee. It is also great to receive freshly squeezed orange juice and not the thin, watery, 'juice'. Service was second to none by two young ladies. Fast, efficient, friendly yet professional. Pricing is more than reasonable. I am always apprehensive about the 10% service charge. I have no objection to paying it as I would, for good service, leave a 10% tip but does it go to the staff. So many companies now put it into their profits.

The hot chocolate was certainly worth it - it's valrohna and basically the best I've ever had that wasn't the very thick Spanish/Italian variety (twss). It was also nice and warming on a crisp day, as were the heaters and thoughtful furry chair liners and blankets in the outside seating area. I was strongly recommended the brew special but actually I think I would have preferred something like my friend had - the chorizo folded eggs i.e. with a little more kick. The brew special is a classic combo of ham, cheese and pesto which I loved years ago but now wouldn't be my first choice. Still it was well executed with beautifully cooked poached eggs on sourdough bread. Our breakfast took a long time to come but the service was otherwise notably excellent - our server was attentive, friendly and helpful consistently, meaning we had constant water top ups, updates on the food situation and were able to get the bill quickly before our parking ran out. She was great and an asset to this nice cafe.
