On a snowy Tuesday evening in January and with the aid of our trusty Sat-Nav, we went in search of…read morethe Cock Inn, a place reputed to serve great homemade food. The car park is in the front of what is a fairly large pub, courtesy of its large dining room extension in 2000. Having negotiated some fairly narrow roads to get there, it was good to get inside the warm cosy surroundings and peruse the menu. The bar area of the Cock Inn was packed with locals and the bar itself had a wide range of drinks on offer, sadly driving, I had to stick to coke. The dining room was large with a variety of seating, tables in the window, to make the most of what I suspect is a tremendous view, large tables in the centre for groups and cosier tables for couples. The beamed ceiling awash with what looked like Christmas tree lights, and even trees that appeared to be coming out of the floor, decked with the same lights and the occasional Robin. Sounds strange, but it really did work, the feeling of a calm relaxing environment was great after a day's work. Menu wise, not huge, just right, we skipped the starters and went straight for the main courses, a good variety around the £10-11 mark, like gammon, various different pies, cod and other slightly more expensive dishes like rump of lamb and steak. I went for the fish pie, clearly homemade, a large portion packed with fish (cod, salmon etc), perfectly cooked in a creamy but not overpowering sauce topped with mash potato and a sprinkle of cheese, comfort food personified! My wife had the steak and ale pie, packed with filling, gravy and a thin pastry top, so good. The accompanying peas, carrots, new potatoes and cabbage were the perfect sides. Probably full enough to stop, we ventured to have a dessert, because we were so enjoying the food and the ambience so much. Classics like a cheese board, sticky toffee pudding were on offer, but I had the chocolate fudge cake, with ice cream, slightly disappointing, could have done with being a little more chocolatey. My wife had the homemade apple, date and ginger crumble; an unbelievably good crumble, arguably the stand out dish of the night, I was lucky enough to be able to finish it off, so often desserts flatter to deceive, its nice when a dessert lives up to its billing. On the completion of our meal, we immediately booked in for Sunday lunch in few weeks time, we were very impressed!

Inside the dining area is relatively small, but bathed in light, with modern furnishings and stout wooden tables. There is well-stocked bar, with a great selection of ales and wines, and the staff are friendly, nothing being too much trouble. We had booked for Sunday lunch and had got the last table, so probably best to book. The selection for all three courses were detailed on a chalkboard adjacent to the bar, there were a good range of different dishes. We skipped the starters as we often do and started our meal with a main, dishes included a salmon niçoise salad, vegetarian gnocchi and a chicken breast in a mustard sauce. However, we both plumped for the pork, beautifully cooked, coming with a large homemade Yorkshire Pudding, roast potatoes and stuffing, with a sizeable vegetable dish containing cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, beans and carrots. A great main, full of flavour and a generous portion to boot. Feeling slightly full, do you have a dessert? Of course, tempted by warm lemon drizzle cake and an intriguing chocolate button cheesecake, we opted for the Vanilla pannacotta, in a warm bed of local rhubarb, full of flavour and a sizeable bread and butter pudding, with homemade custard. Both dishes a triumphant end to a great meal. Only a few minor negatives, the music in the background grated rather added to the ambiance and the tables because of the restaurant's size were a little close. Not enough though to stop this being a 5 star experience.

But we stood at the bar with a drink and admired the beautiful husky that was visiting the pub and after 20minutes were seated. The food was absolutely delicious and cannot be faulted in any way. The only reason why I've not given 5 stars is because I was really looking forward to a lamb shank and unfortunately they had sold out and hadn't told me when I sat down. The service was very pleasant and we were even offered extra gravy half way through our meal which I think is a great touch. Great pub, not cheap but definitely worth every penny.

A popular pub with a largish car park, in a good location right next to the canal. A good variety of outdoor seating, both at the front of the pub and in prime location next to the canal, perfect for a summer's evening! Inside the pub is modern and spacious, with pictures adorning the walls from Willington in bygone times. We visited on a Bank Holiday and the Dragon was very busy with diners and drinkers alike, sheltering from the incessant rain! Menu wise, a good variety of dishes, both traditional and more modern. As it was so busy on the evening we visited, we just went straight for the mains. We went for the 'Dragon burger' and the Moroccan Tagine; the burger was tasty enough, with a pleasant accompanying side salad and great chips. The tagine was the pick of the dishes though, full of flavour and a sizeable portion, with cous cous, but could have done with a portion of veg, but that was an extra. Other dishes included steaks, fish and chips, homemade pies etc. A good meal, and we will definitely give the starters and desserts a try on another visit.
