My eye was more drawn to the Historical Marker in front and then I had to stop and check inside…read more The marker reads, "Old Stone Shop. Built in 1848, by Batcheller & Sons, makers of pitchforks. For many years after 1808, farm implements were manufactured here. Lyman Batcheller & his sons bought the forge in 1835, and their forks became famous throughout the U.S. and Europe. In 1902 they merged with the firm making True Temper products, which re-built the Inn." The marker was erected in 1949 by the Vermont Historic Sites Commission. Inside, not just farm implements but jewelry and toys and furniture and cutting boards and glassware and pottery. It's just amazing to see all of this stuff that is, well, hand made in Vermont. But you come here in part for three things: the maple syrup (nuff said), the view, and the Maple Creemees. We could call it soft serve but well, Vermont. The creemees are delish. Affordable and big they are perfect on a summer day, a fall, day or even a winter day. Then take it out and eat by the lake? Heavenly. Nice people. Well worth the stop.
