DEFINITELY A GREAT BIKE PATH. It's safe, well maintained, and spans for about 10-15 miles one way. If you want to find a bike path that goes right along the beach then this place is for you. It is very scenic. The view is fantastic (beach, bikinis, ocean, homes, shops, piers). I've biked here a handful of times already and don't think I will get tired of it anytime soon. The only downside is the initial part between redondo and manhattan where the speed is 8mph. While I don't think cops will pay too much attention to your speed, there are a lot of people who walk on this. A lot of them are mindful to stay closer to the sides so that bikes can pass them, but there are always a particular few who block the entire path. It's super annoying but hey, if you're following the 8mph rule then it shouldn't matter too much I guess. If you want to go further then you can do that as well. The bike path ends around marina del rey and joints the streets. You could follow that for a short while and reconnect onto venice and head all the way up to santa monica. Looking for a mini-vacation? Take the bike path. Beautiful scenery, and time near the beach. Ah! I like to start, on the South Torrance end, closet to Palos Verdes. Such great ocean views. Lots of cool places to stop for a snack along the way. Interesting people, and architecture to be spotted a long the way. If you are really, really lucky you might see dolphins. In the right time you can see waves and surfers, as well. On a clear day, you can see Catalina Island in the distance.There are separate walking/jogging paths and biking. Be cautious, people switch it up. Also be aware that unexpected sand can cause you to spin out of control, or take a tumble. Be careful. It gets very busy on weekends and holidays, especially in the summertime. All in, all, it's a great 22 mile adventure through diverse communities from Torrance to Santa Monica. Super busy during the weekends. Some spots are so heavy with the foot traffic, you actually have to walk your bike. There are separate bike and pedestrian lanes for the most part, but walkers/runners don't abide. Other people have yelped The Strand, commonly referred to as that portion of the Southbay Bicycle Trail between Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. My review is on the whole path. The Southbay Bicycle Trail runs 22 miles from Will Rogers State Beach in the north all the way to Torrance County Beach. It seamlessly connects you to the coastal cities on the westside-Torrance, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, El Segundo, Playa Del Rey, Venice and Santa Monica. If you own a bicycle and you live along the coast, this can be your alternative to the 405, Sepulveda, and Lincoln blvds. I ride this path as part of my commute to my work in Hawthorne almost everyday. On weekends parts of the bike path particularly in Hermosa, Redondo, Manhattan Beach and Venice can get really crowded with tourists, people watchers, volleyball players, & sun bathers. But when I ride to work early in the morning there is hardly anyone on it save for a few joggers and an occasional bike commuter. Oh, and of course you can't miss the most beautiful girls in the world practicing volleyball in the morning-guys this is a major perk for leaving your car at home-I see them when I ride everyday and I think, 'why would i even want to be stuck in traffic on Sepulveda on my way to work when I've got a view of the beach AND the hemosa beach volleyball girls? I've also seen dolphins swimming in the ocean, heard the waves, felt the ocean breeze,met a few people along the way. Isn't this why I moved to SoCal in the first place? With the exception of Hermosa Beach, foot traffic and bike traffic are separated, although you will encounter people jogging on the bike path just about anywhere. Along the Hyperion plant you will encounter people jogging there so be careful. Pass on the left,call out when you pass, be polite. This brings us to potential dangers on the bike path. Keep in mind that just because it's a bike path, doesn't mean it's entirely 100% safe. On weekends in the Hermosa section of the Bike Path I often ride along Hermosa Avenue instead-if you know how to ride it's actually safer to ride down hermosa ave than the bike path when it's crowded. Consider these hazards on the bike path that people don't think of-dogs on long leashes, peds, baby strollers, volleyballs, footballs, frisbees, that appear out of nowhere,drunks. When it's really crowded i just walk my bike. Sand on the strand can also be a big problem when you ride a bike. I've taken a few spills myself over the years, so watch those turns-you will slip and slide when you least expect it. In the winter time usually around January to March when the wind kicks up there can be sand covering many parts that you will have to walk your bike. The Strand along Hermosa is usually kept clean. But around the hyperion plant, they don't clean it as often so you may have to walk your bike 100 yards or so from time to time. DON"T OVERLOOK RIDING THIS PATH TO LAX- From the southbay you can ride this path and take side streets to Aviaition Green Line Station. There you can put your bike safely in a rented bike locker, and connect to the airport via the free G Bus. (Douglas, and El Segundo also have bike Lockers available for rent- see www.metro.net) At night you'll also have to be careful of star crossed lovers uncaring or unknowing of your presence. Also, other cyclists cruising by without a bike light-I've been in several near hits over the years. ALWAYS ride with a light on the bike path at night-it get's DARK out there. If you start commuting on it from Hermosa to Venice for example, i'd even recommend a high powered light, as there are places with literally no street lights. Crime. I've heard of crime happening along the Southbay Bike Path,most of it at night. But my perspective is that it's not nearly as bad as it used to be. Back in the day, when we would ride from Venice to El Segundo at night, we would ride really fast for fear of gangs and muggers. Now when I ride I see older people and teenage girls jogging by themselves so I gotta believe its alot safer than it used to be. I've never seen any violence happen on the bikepath in my five years of regular night and day riding through it. If you are a westside or southbay resident that regularly commutes anywhere near this path, consider using it to get to your destination. It may take you a little longer to get where you are going, but the peace of mind gained, sights and sounds of the beach will be time better spent than watching someone pick their nose while you are waiting for the lights to turn green in your car, by yourself, on Pacific Coast Highway blvd. read more

My favorite diversionary trip in LA and a great stress releaser. I have done this path so many times and never get tired of this exercise. The best form of cheap entertainment. The beach, the sun, the girls in bikins, the beautiful girls, and great people watching places to watch the girls. Boooooo to the people who walk along this path.....use the sand for your pedestrian efforts! I always like to stop on that little bridge and watch the fisherman battle the fish. This path is a great place to enjoy a nice panarama of the beach. Nothing beats the beauty of walking the sidewalks by the sand and seeing the sun rise or set. It's almost always free of debris, and a pretty fun walk for couples. It's a GREAT place to jog in the morning. The biggest problem on the Strand is the CYCLISTS. These arrogant, spandex-wearing snobs think that they are entitled to break all speed limits and have total and complete ownership of a shared path. God forbid that you should be there at the same time that they want to speed by. The colorful wannabe Lance Armstrongs ignore speed limits, and flagrantly violate posted signs on ramps leading to the path that explicitly say "no bicycle riding". There are areas in Redondo that do in fact indicate where pedestrians are supposed to walk, and where the bikes are to go. That's understandable, and it is perhaps the ONLY thing that the coneheads on their titanium twenty-speeds bother to read at all. I know this review probably sounds bitter and vindictive, but I use the path with a bike AND my feet, yet I don't feel that everyone should bow down to me and get out of my way when I am using the paths either way. They are public, and therefore, no single person or group should feel a sense of entitlement and or ownership in regards to them. read more

PRO: 10+ miles ocean view. CON: Trail goes into high traffic area around Marina Del Ray. I usually start from Torrance Beach to Santa Monica. Takes me a few hours to get there and back, but it's great trail. It's mostly flat so i would recommend doing time trials here. They have indicators to tell you that it's been a mile. read more

This is honestly one of the treasure of the South Bay, Beach Cities, the fact you can ride your bike from Santa Monica, all the way down to the Redondo Beach Pier in a safe, fun trail that is well maintained is such a great treat. If you're locked into city live in the Lala, megatown, it's nice to take a breath and get away for some quality time with nature, go on, do it...she's been asking about you. Very nice ride for the healthy, looky loos, lovers, groups etc etc... Redondo to Venice is awesome if you are an avid rider or a tourist. Either way you will have fun. I ride my motorcycle through PV Drive North and love the wonderfull smell of nature as well if you need a change from the hustle and bustle of the beach. read more
