The lady at the front desk was very friendly and pleasant. I felt like I was genuinely valued as a customer. The premises is being remodeled, but most of the rooms and buildings have been updated. The bed was surprisingly comfortable with great pillows and a soft blanket. The room was basic, but plenty clean. The sink and cabinet in the bathroom were the only things showing age and wear, but this was not a big deal. Contrary to some reviews, this motel is more than a mile away from town, so it's unlikely that you would want to walk there from your room. All in all, I enjoyed my stay here and it was a great value.

The police and paramedics are here several times a day usually for overdoses or gang shootings. Car break-ins are common. The gangs try to force themselves into apartments. There are constant knocks at the door at all hours saying in a forced rough whisper, "let me in." It's very unsettling. People are constantly begging in the parking lot and the hallways for everything. All they want is the next high. People offer to sell "everything". It's not safe to leave your apartment. It's not safe to be in your apartment. It's not safe to walk through the hallways. It's not safe to walk through the parking lot because of speeding cars and gun shots. You never know who's going to show up for dinner and parties and those who you'll never see again because of trying to attend those dinners and parties. It seems like I'm attending a funeral of a fellow resident every month due to violence here. The management won't discuss it.

The parking lot entrance is on the side of the building, and there aren't a lot of signs that make it clear where we can park. It was also almost empty when we arrived around 9pm, so it was kind of confusing - we weren't sure whether this was the Hyatt parking lot or just a parking garage. Get your ticket to enter the garage, and once you go up the ramp, turn right rather than going straight. There is an elevator entrance that will take to you to the hotel and you can park there. Once we got in the elevator, the buttons said that floors 2 and 3 were Hyatt garage. Hotel lobby is in floor 1. Parking is $15 per entry. We stayed just one night and didn't need to check, but I'm not sure whether re-entry is allowed. The facility is brand new, so this has been the cleanest hotel I've been to in my life. Plus, getting to use brand new towels was so cool. They were so soft! Every one of the staff members we interacted with were super friendly. The least friendly of the bunch was the general manager, who checked us in at night. Not to say he wasn't friendly. lol. But everyone else was nicer! Breakfast is $8 per person. It is standard continental breakfast as I've had at other Hyatt locations, but with bacon instead of sausage, and with the addition of egg-bite-like quiches without crust. One is ham, and the other is spinach. They were both soft and delicious, though i preferred the ham. Coffee. They had the best coffee in all the hotels we stayed at during our cross country trip. And the nicest guy getting the breakfast buffet in order. He was at the door greeting guests coming in and being so helpful throughout the course. The whole experience was well worth the $8, and as it is always the case, the people working behind the scenes were the ones who made it so, rather than the taste of the food itself. Thank you!

The central location is a short stroll to shopping, dining and entertainment. The contemporary décor is sleek and elegant. We were pleased with our room, which was quiet and comfortable. Guest rooms include a separate sitting area (widescreen TVs facing the beds can be angled towards the couches). Standard rooms have a small fridge and a coffee maker, but no microwave. Amenities, including a fitness room and a lobby bar/restaurant, are superb. The personnel we encountered at the front desk were friendly and helpful. The hotel's breakfast buffet is better than most, offering a variety of hot and cold items including healthy selections. Whole fruit was meager, though. On one morning of our stay, just one worker showed up to cook and serve a large breakfast crowd, resulting in long waits for items to be replenished.

The entire reservation, check in and check out process was very clear. Leslie was great with communication throughout the stay and all of the instructions were clear in emails leading up to our reservation. I stayed at the Buck Haven Cabin which had one bedroom and a loft with another bed. It was perfect for my parents and I but can sleep up to six. The cabin was fully furnished and had plenty of towels, pillows and extra blankets. The entire cabin was comfortable, well decorated and temperature controlled. There is a key to use although you are provided a code for the key pad which we found easiest to use. There is a porch and deck with a grill, picnic table and a firepit with chairs. Unfortunately we did not utilize these during out two night stay last week. Firewood and smore kits are available for purchase. There is a great binder provided that gives suggestions on restaurants and activities in the area and even provides a little history on the property and family that owns it. The cabin was only about 15 minutes from Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. In either direction you can find breweries, restaurants and other activities such as Bear Country, a candy store and off road vehicle rentals. We also visited Wall Drug and Badlands National Park which was approximately one hour away. The location was central which allowed us to visit a variety of spots. While in a great area, Freedom Ridge Cabins are not on a main road so there is plenty of privacy. They currently have four cabins but the property is well designed and you wouldn't even know you have neighbors unless you catch them outside. It is very quiet. Although we did not need additional items while we were there, the owners are on site and can provide what you need very quickly. I have nothing negative to say about my stay at Freedom Ridge Cabins. I highly recommend staying with them if visiting South Dakota. The price was reasonable and not much more than a stay in a regular, boring hotel room. They basically took it down to the bare walls and rebuilt it. Having stayed in my share of remodeled properties, I appreciate the quality and workmanship I see in my room. I don't come across places this well built very often. The rooms are very basic, but they're spacious, functional, and absolutely clean with a very modern vibe. There are a couple of "apartment" rooms that would work for families. The rooms have a 50 inch TV on the wall, microwave, fridge, and coffee maker. Beds are comfortable, pillows are supportive, and the AC works great. While there aren't many restaurants in the immediate area, Rapid City isn't that big and is easy to get around so you can find pretty much anything in a few miles. I like that they use open shelves instead of dressers - there's plenty of space to open your suitcase. And even though this is a simple, almost Spartan hotel, the upgraded soaps & shampoos are a nice touch. The Nest may not have a name brand, but it's a well run hotel that I would book again. This mountain lodge is situated off highway 16 in Hill City, SD. It's conveniently located within 10 miles from Mount Rushmore National Memorial. We also did a late-checkout so we could go to the waterpark and come back and shower, but the hot water system was off. I was told that it would come back at 3pm but it never did till after I checked out at 4pm. It was a very inconvenient one night stay, and it is a shame because I loved the room and ammenities.
