This hotel was very clean and rooms were well-stocked! Initially we had a small hiccup because the room smelled bad and housekeeping did not address it upon our request. Luckily, Esmeralda at the front desk was very efficient and came up personally to give us a new room key at no cost. They have attached parking and a fitness center. Location is walkable in relation to Little Italy and Seaport Village. The attached restaurant, Truva, also has delicious food and excellent service, thanks to our server Laura. We are having one of our bathrooms remodeled, so we booked the Sofia Hotel which is a few blocks away from our home, for my wife to spend the first few days after her surgery, so that she could recover more comfortably. We checked in Wednesday night, around 11:30pm. Once we arrived to the room, it was far more worn and rundown than the photos, but overall seemed relatively clean. It was warm & stuffy, so we decided to turn on the air. Almost immediately, both my throat and my wife's throat became extremely dry. We both started having minor coughs due to the air. Upon spotting the air vent, we definitely did not feel comfortable or safe breathing the gunk in the vent in. However, it was too stuffy and hot in the room without the air. Given this, we decided that it would be safer for my wife to recover at home, despite the construction. We checked out with the front desk attendant and left around 12:15AM, 45 minutes later. The next day, we realized that we were not checked out of the room. When we called to asked if we could be checked out, an employee name Ian informed us that he could not provide us with an email confirmation that we had checked out. My wife repeatedly asked for this, and Ian kept repeating that we had booked a non-refundable room & could not get our money back. We repeated that we just wanted a receipt that we checked out. We were told the night staff couldn't check people out. The room wasn't great, but the biggest issue was the customer service. Ian was combative, rude, and uncooperative for what was a very standard request. I believe they wanted to keep us checked into to avoid us complaining to Expedia as well as continuing to charge us the $24 per day, "WiFi fee". read more

Location: safe area (my feeling), close to the convention center. Some restaurants options around, but not in the hotel, at all. Even no food market to grab a water or snack.... (Due to location convenience, I picked this place, for my own family trip, I won't pick here). -0.5 Bedroom: it's a very historical hotel, so the room is "old", look at these windows and furnitures. But I have to say, they are maintained well, all windows around, very bright vibe during the day. No smell in the room at all!!! Even better than many 5 star hotels I stayed recently. Also, it's quiet, I barely hear anything in the lobby (1-2 times when people tried to open/close their doors), no sound from the street at all. Bedding: surprised me, comfortable !! It's at the hard side, which I preferred. And the button sheet (rough texture) is also what I like! Bathroom: good renovation, very clean, new, even though it's small. The shower head is the bummer...I stayed at high floor, very very small water flow.... Hard for me to even wash my hair -0.5 (this is a big no for me). Other equipment: they have both microwave and fridge in the room, nice! And Nespresso machine, nicer! Steamer for clothes, great! Staff: one of the senior staff (I think she is the supervisor) is super friendly and helpful, the other young girl was just ok. The good . The location of the hotel is really great. It's a quick 10-15 min walk to the waterfront as well as gaslamp quarter too and there is a Starbucks for pickup directly on the floor of the lobby as you exit. The staff are really nice and they offer flavored water and candies 24/7. There are filtered water machines on some floors as well as ice machines. There is a microwave and fridge and coffee maker in the room as well as all the necessities for toiletries including facial makeup remover clothes and towels. The room I was in could've been dusted more but I was able to check in early so maybe it was cleaned a while before. The not so good. Though the hotel is a bit dated and the rooms are small the service of the staff makes up for it in many ways. My tv was not working and they quickly sent someone up to fix it. read more

Went far enough to harass our own mother in the lobby for waiting to come to our room. Whatever the staff did- made our mom cry and told us she no longer wants to stay here. On my husband's 40th birthday, we went to San Diego for a weekend getaway. We decided to stay at the Sofia Hotel, a charming boutique hotel and iconic landmark in downtown San Diego. The building is almost 100 years old and a fun fact is that it was the first hotel in San Diego (originally opened as The Pickwick Terminal Hotel) to include bathrooms inside the rooms, which was considered very rare at the time. Our room was the corner suite on the top floor, it was just recently remodeled, so we had the opportunity to try it out for the first time. The view was beautiful, and the room featured cool modern tech touches, including touch-screen controls for every lamp. They were a little confusing at first, but I got used to them quickly. The mattress was very comfortable, just peeerfect for a good night sleep, especially because we were traveling from Miami and were a little jetlagged. Overall, the space was beautifully designed, blending contemporary style with warm, comfortable finishes that made it feel both modern and inviting. I loved the details outside the door: the hotel logo lit up in different colors to show the room's status, for example, it turned green when you requested cleaning. But the hotel experience was more than just the rooms. Saturdays and Sundays at 9 a.m., there's a free walking tour through the Gaslamp Quarter, and we were lucky enough to join one. It was a wonderful way to discover hidden details and stories about the city, the kind only a seasoned guide like Pamela can bring to life. It's an experience you truly must try for yourself. On the other hand, if you're in for adventures, the hotel also offers complimentary bikes so you can go off on your own and cruise through other city gems like the legendary Balboa Park. Our stay at the Sofia Hotel was incredibly refreshing, but what made it truly special was the service and how it made us feel truly cared for. My stay at The Sofia Hotel has come with mixed thoughts. And because of the lack of response from management, I'm going through with this review until and unless someone actually responds to me. I checked in during Comic Con week on Wednesday. I arrived around 11am but I was given a room right away which was awesome. Taylor checked me in and although she was super friendly and sweet, she was also a bit clueless on basic amenities and options from the hotel. This is 100% on the training or management. I asked about wi-fi, she said she didn't know how guests connect. I noticed a comic con shuttle guide, she said she didn't even know there was a shuttle. Why isn't management informing the front desk about these things, especially during the time when San Diego sees the most traffic every year? And just to add onto that - later on I was returning to my room and asked another gentleman at the front desk a few things, and he stared at me as if I was speaking another language. He pointed to the other front desk attendant and said "he can help you". So why are you sitting at the front desk? When I first arrived to my room on the fourth floor, things seemed decent. Until I noticed all the surfaces had a heavy layer of dust that hasn't been touched in weeks. When I hopped in the shower, there was hair all over the bottles and on the walls. This made me start digging some more and I found the bed full of hairs and stains and dirt. The curtains were also absolutely filthy and the fridge wasn't keeping anything cold. I immediately went to complain and yet another gentleman working was kind enough to move me to a renovated room on the 7th floor right away. I was shocked that rooms were available given the event but happy to be moved so fast. This room was definitely new. Clean, brighter, vibrant, and comfortable. The shower was a bit weak but the fridge actually worked and everything else was great. HOWEVER - every time I left and returned to my room, there was a new problem. For 3 days a cleaning cart was left right outside my room door. The elevators constantly had trash kept around them and on top of the trash can - never to be cleaned. I asked at least 4 different front desk attendants at various times for the manager's contact but I was always given an excuse. I sent an email upon my return which was 5 days ago and I still haven't heard back. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE. SERIOUSLY... This was hands down the worst hotel experience I've ever had, and it's absolutely not worth the ridiculous amount of money they charge. The only thing you're paying for is the location. Other than that, this place is a complete disappointment. The rooms are unbelievably small and packed with unnecessary furniture that just takes up what little space you have. The bathrooms are tiny too. The room smelled bad, the floors felt dirty, and the bed was honestly one of the most uncomfortable hotel beds I've ever slept on. On top of that, whatever AC or rooftop equipment they have running is insanely loud. It kept waking me up throughout the night. If you're hoping to get decent sleep, good luck. The biggest issue, though, was how my mother was treated by hotel staff. I checked in on June 5 and informed the hotel that my mother would be arriving the following morning and checking into her reservation later that day. I was even issued a separate parking permit for her vehicle. On June 6 at approximately 7:00 AM, my mother arrived after driving over 10 hours from Arizona. I told her to wait for me in the lobby while I came downstairs. She wasn't sitting there for more than a few minutes before a male staff member (wearing all black, had glasses on, messy hair, a little chubby) working the front desk approached her and told her she had to leave. My mother explained multiple times that she was waiting for her daughter, who was already checked into the hotel, and that she would be checking into her own room later that day. Despite this, the employee was extremely rude and forced her to leave the lobby. She was then told she couldn't wait near the front entrance either and ended up sitting back in her car. Whatever was said during that interaction upset her so much that she later became emotional and refused to repeat everything that had been said to her. No guest should be treated that way, especially someone who had a legitimate reason to be there. What makes this even more frustrating is that throughout my stay I saw numerous people sitting in the lobby area at various hours without being questioned. Yet my mother, who was waiting for a registered guest and had an upcoming reservation herself, was immediately singled out and removed. A simple conversation or verification would have cleared everything up. Instead, the situation was handled with zero professionalism, empathy, or common sense. Between the tiny rooms, dirty floors, unpleasant smell, uncomfortable beds, excessive noise, and the unacceptable treatment of my mother, this was easily the worst hotel experience I've ever had. I will never stay at The Sofia Hotel again, and I absolutely would not recommend wasting your money here. read more

Terrible place! I came in this morning at 7 am Saturday June 6th 2026 to wait on my daughter since she checked in for us the night before and I was asked by security to wait on the street. I told him my daughter was ion her way down to greet me and he still asked me to go outside cause the lobby was for "guest only" little he knew I was the one who paid for the room and asked my daughter to check in for us since she was driving there first than me. This hotel was comfortable and the staff was friendly. I thought the price was right. I paid $175 per night through Priceline and this included taxes and fees. I would give a 5-star review but here's where things went south. To my surprise, upon check-in I was told that I would be assessed an additional $73.44 in additional fees. When I later inquired about the fees because I had pre-paid for the room, the check-in clerk handed me a list of amenities that she said the fees covered - like use of the gym, filtered water dispenser, coffee, etc. Later, when I inquired again she dismissed the list and said the additional $73.44 was just for fees. I wasn't going to argue with the check-in clerk because I know she is just doing her job, however, to surprise me or other guests with an additional fee at check-in is a deceptive practice and it's morally wrong. My trip to San Diego had a set budget. If I had known about the additional cost prior to the trip I might have sought out another hotel. That wasn't possible when checking in at 5PM after traveling all afternoon with a pre-paid reservation that, at that point, could no longer be refunded. If The Sofia Hotel will accept reservations through Priceline's booking system then it needs to effectively communicate the full cost of a reservation through that system. If The Sofia hotel is ok with engaging in bait & switch tactics to lure in customers, then this was the first and last time I'll book with this hotel. I looked at a LOT!! of places before picking The Sofia Hotel, and I made the right choice. The location is excellent, in the downtown area, but still quiet and safe. The trolly is a few blocks away, which was very convenient. Get the Pronto card for use on buses and trolleys, very good value, clean and pleasant to use. Little Italy and Gaslamp were within walking distance so you are close to restaurants etc. I found the price of the hotel very reasonable, the staff were friendly, helpful and always there if you needed them. The hotel was extremely clean, quiet and very peaceful. Rooms were great, beds were comfy. There is a gym on site and a restaurant next door. Rooms all had bar closet with microwave, coffee maker, and mini fridge. Some reviews mentioned that the rooms were dark, there are privacy type shades on the windows but they can be rolled up, there was also lots of lights/lamps in the rooms. If I ever go back to San Diego, I would stay there again! read more

So, I can't speak for some of the other we reviews here on here or other places but DO NOT BE AFRAID! Sofia Hotel was an AMAZING stay. It is Boutique, quiet, and gets the job done. We had an amazing stay for our anniversary weekend. It was quiet and comfortable. It totally beats all of the other larger hotels unless that's your thing and you want to be around a ton of people. Let's start from the beginning.... 1. Parking - wasn't bad at all. Lot is literally behind the hotel. Nothing uneasy about this. Don't overthink it. Just valet if you prefer. What's an extra $10/day + tip 2. Water Pressure - Showers were hot and great. Walk-in as well! 3. Room Size - we stayed in a king quiet and it was perfect. Also has a pull out bed in the adjacent living space area. Could be perfect for a small family. 4. Area was safe and just really easy going for a weekend. Wishin minutes to Gaslamp busier areas and Little Italy. Don't fret and stay with Sofia... it's cute with lots of charm and I believe a new restaurant may be arriving in the next few months downstairs. These is just my unbiased review and I've stayed at some Great & Bad places over the years. This one was a great deal. Don't compare and just enjoy. read more

Below basic hotel. Worst shower I've ever taken. I've had better showers at campgrounds. I stood in 2" of dirty water for my entire shower. It still hadn't drained an hour later when I finally gave up and left for my work meeting. The shower dripped the e tire night long to the point of keeping me awake. Despite closing the shower glass and the bathroom door, it still kept me up all night. There are absolutely zero amenities. Not even a plastic shower cap. The room layout was strangest I have ever seen with the bathroom sink at the entrance to the room. I could pretty much wash my hands standing on the threshold! Also I had specifically requested a higher floor and was at the hotel early for them to get me into such a room and that failed as well. Staff was unenthusiastic. Our stay was mediocre at best. The stay was fine. There is no parking onsite so they charge 40-50 dollars a day for parking to leave your car in some shady lot. I brought cash I had in the car due to safety concerns, but it ended up being stolen by cleaning staff! The management was not good. Stayed here for about 5 days for an anniversary weekend. Room was very small and walls were thin as well. For the bed, didn't like the comfort level of them at all as me and my girlfriend were not able to get much sleep. Shower pressure was not great as it was basically the same pressure feel you would get from a cheap sink. There was also a crack on our window leading into the outside which wasn't pleasant. A/C unit is extremely load when active and TV is decades behind. The 250+ a night coverage plus 40 for parking per night AND an around 300$+ for accidentals I would expect alot more from the hotel but everything seemed extremely outdated and not cared for. Stayed here for 1 night, and compared to the Hardrock, this hotel is trash. Valet is pretty much in the street and will run you $50. But if you want to self park, it will cost you $40. Wow, what a difference. There's no bell service. You have to bring your own luggage to the room yourself. I am physically in a wheelchair so this is very challenging with luggage, and I didn't get anyone to offer help. Came into the lobby, and there were 3 ladies at the desk 1 on the phone, and the other 2 just looked fake busy. Waited for about 5 mins to be greeted by the lady who was on the phone. Asked the ladies about Valet, and they know nothing, was told to ask valet. Finally got the key, and I guess this is an old hotel because the elevator was so small that I could barely roll my manual wheelchair in without hitting my knuckles. So if u have a bulky electric wheelchair, dnt stay here. We requested an accessible room, so the room was pretty big. No problem with the room other than the windows are drafty, the walls are thin, and you can hear all the commotion outside. The location is horrible. Literally next door, theres bail bonds and jail. Conveniently, there's a Starbucks right outside the hotel, but I wouldn't roam this area at night if I wanted to go for a little stroll in the area or club hop. I booked through Price Line and was charged a $22 per day resort fee, then the resort charged me another $16.95 Amenities Fee. Now is you booking directly with the hotel they would charge you the 22$ a day fee, but not the $16.95 amenities fee. So they are double dipping if you book with a travel site. That should be illegal. Plus, an outrageous $40 per day to park in a public parking lot next to the hotel. There was also a historic fee on top of everything per night. These fees as quick. Convenient location to the Gaslamp Quarter and about a 10-15min walk to the convention center. Staff is very nice, friendly, and available at the front desk. Small candy/water/fruit provided at the front desk. Starbucks, Chipotle, and TenderGreens food options right next door. Refillable water stations so we didn't have to buy water. Cons- Price not worth the value of the room ($265/night + $40/night parking + tax/fees). Rooms are tiny, walls are thin and dimly lit. The queen 2 person room might have been the smallest hotel room I've ever stayed in. Small bathroom with no space to put personal toiletries or belongings. The mirror/sink/vanity is on the outside of the bathroom (personally not a fan, and washing my hands/face or brushing my teeth over carpet gives me the ick). No restaurant, bar or food available inside/at the hotel. Location is right on the edge of the not so nice part of Gaslamp in San Diego, feels a little unsafe at night. read more

The hotel itself is beautiful. The lobby is very welcoming and the front desk staff and bell hop were all extremely pleasant. They gave me a free room upgrade based on my VIP status with Expedia. The elevators are tiny and older. It is a good thing there are only 7 floors, so you don't have to wait long. The hallways are dim and give off a horror movie vibe. Once in the room, it was beautiful as well. It had a living room, vanity outside the bathroom, a rain shower and a large very comfortable bed. Some of the lights in the room didn't work and the coffee provided in the room was not good, but otherwise a great room. The area around the hotel is a little sketchy. There were a ton of homeless people and I wouldn't suggest walking around at night. It is a few blocks from bars/restaurants/CVS, etc. I would recommend this place if you had a car or Uber to where you need to go. read more

Do not stay here! A few months ago I stayed at this hotel. However, housekeeping stole items from our room. I went to the front desk and the gal got defensive. When I asked to speak to a manager, she said nobody was available. Finally a manager came up to the room took notes and said they would get back to me and assured me that one of their employees could not have possibly taken anything. We stayed here about 3-4 years ago. We finally had guts to get out to have a mini getaway and we liked this hotel the last time, so figured will stay here again. The price is great due to the pandemic. Last time, I didn't notice so many furnitures are so outdated. Outdated is one thing, but the sofa is peeling...it makes me feel like sitting there is so uncomfortable. And they still have the antique ihome alarm/stereo. I had the same one like 10-12 years ago lol the updates should be done ways before the pandemic. Well, right now with the uncertainty, I guess they will never update their stuffs... Good thing is the location of this hotel is close to the heart of the gas lamp and has a lot of places to eat around. But that's about it! read more

We heard this was going to be a nice hotel but when we get there we find; stained pillows, broken closet door,what sounded like a rat in the vent, broken microwave and stiff uncomfortable beds. I cannot see why this hotel can call itself a "4 star" hotel. I will NOT be coming back here . read more
