Head, shoulders and torso above anywhere else I have had a drink; and I write as a 40 year old who has ventured into 100's of watering holes during the course of *ahem* my 22 years as a punter.
This place just has the X-factor for me and it become a second living room for me over 2 years ago, here's why:
- Great log fires, and the smell they make! *ahhhh*
- Great live music, from quirky folk stuff to guitar soloists and lots in between, piped music when on (you will get random silences, which for me just adds to the charm of this place!) rarely disappoints, the right volume for listening to without disrupting normal conversation.
- random fresh and dried flowers / organic stuff / ski boots / games to play / pianos / guitars / places to sit / beanbags / books / vending machines selling sweeties / knick-knacks etc etc etc...
- NO FRUIT MACHINES (big plus)
- washing your hands from a beer pump that dispenses water
- outside areas that have to be experienced to be appreciated
- ever-changing art exhibitions
- two entrance doors, and never knowing if either will be locked due to random re-arranging of furniture due to random happenings on the ground floor.
- piiiiiies.... yummmm....
- GREAT BEER (and it's not tied to a brewery)
- It has a well (A WELL?!?) in the basement area, by far the maddest and quirkiest area of this venue!
- Speakeasy (Google it)
- Portrait class
- Joy, the resident adorable Black Lab
- It's not quite, and probably never will be, quite finished (just adds to the charm, for me)
- several other things I won't have thought of in writing this
OK. nowhere is perfect, just a few grumbles...
- Friendly, but often inexperienced staff who haven't quite mastered pulling a pint (a polite request will always get you a top-up, though)
- Wine is rather expensive, particularly in 125ml glasses
- Gents being asked to use the Ladies after 11pm? :/
- Sunday opening hours (I often fancy a "Goosing Session" on a Sunday night) have gone a bit random, sometimes closing as early as 10pm if it's very quiet, but last sunday the bar closed at midnight as licensed.
- Pleeeeeease do more foooooooood!
That's about it! All in all a wonderful venue competing extremely strongly in a town fast developing into a great night out with several great new venues opening up all around, but none of which have consistently temped me away from the 'Goose read more
