Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The portions are huge and I'm always left with enough food for another meal but save room for the Holly Bush sundae because you wont ever have a such a selection of tasty locally made ice cream :) The prices are great too, last time I went it was around 30quid for the 2 of us.

Not the same as eating abroad but hey it's excellent. btw 5 stars are due to the tokens we've collected over the visits we've made so we got £24 off - bargain. We only managed starters and a main each due to being tired and enjoying the quality and the quantity of the food. A shared bottle of house prosseco helped us along nicely. There is also a snooker/pool table and some other arcade type furniture as well as the American flags dotted around with some other cool photos hung on the walls. The food was absolutely amazing! We had the hunters chicken and a sirloin steak and they were perfectly cooked and tasted delicious! I would definitely recommend to anyone hungry for some proper grub! Linda the lady who runs the restaurant is very friendly and would do anything for you. We were a group of 4 so she moved the tables around so that we could all sit together. She also came out with us as we were leaving to wish us well as we were leaving the day after. Fab food and awesomely furnished restaurant. WE WILL BE BACK!

It is set off the cobbles in the town centre and it does have steps up to both doors so access isn't fantastic. The local restaurant Cafe Symphony has recently taken over the food side of things and this has meant a significant improvement! The food is great and choice is wide. They've even got themselves a decent coffee machine making it a pleasant stop for a lunch time coffee and bite to eat. The toilets are very clean and there is a baby change facility a nice surprise for a pub!

We are well aware that the Black Bear has stood the test of time for hundreds of years but no pub these days can afford to rest on it's laurels (the amount of for lease/for sale boards nailed to previously thriving pubs is testament to that). It's not rocket science to greet your paying customers with a smile, not a snarl, and they will recommend you to others. This pub is old, quaint and characterful - sorry barman, you were just old, rude and in need of customer service training. If you don't like dealing with customers then stay behind the scenes and let somebody with a personality take over. The Black Bear loses a star from us for bad customer service which is a pity because the food was so good.

Howevver we promptly returned the week after and immediately fell in love with the place. What an incredible experiance. First thing you notice is the size of the place. (Tiny) It genuinely feels like a hidden bar from the prohibition era with incredible decor and music that suits the Blues/Jazzy environment to perfection. Being here is like traveling back in time to the 20's when alcohol was illegal and small secret bars like these were littered across America. The theme is consistent with the menu hidden inside a book that's handed to you upon arrival. So mesmerized were we with the vibe and conversation the cocktail taste bud memories are hazy at best. (I'll leave you with a visual of the cocktails we had. One was lemon based the other strawberry based?) This is THE perfect place for those who like sophisticated conversation with your aptly aesthetic cocktails. It's not noisey, it's not busy, it's just right. Definitely worth a visit. My one criticism would be that may be the music is too loud but that's that's it. The staff were all very welcoming, and we were all really impressed with the friendly, efficient service. The menu was full of English comfort foods...and they executed everything beautifully. Just look at my photos to get an idea...I tried the goats cheese and caramelised onion strudel, which came balanced on potatoes and perfect ratatouille. If you ever find yourself in this part of the country, it is definitely worth popping in here for some lunch! *Pro tip: It sounded like they get very booked up in the evening, so ring ahead to ensure you get a table!!
