This is not an enquiry it is a complaint. Myself and 4 other friends who dine every sunday came to the restaurant on sunday evening at 7:45, on arrival we were seated at a table having pre-booked, we waited 15 minutes for a drink and menus, then another 45 minutes before our meal arrived. Only one of us ordered a starter which for 6 pounds was ridiculous, it consisted of one pear soaked in wine on a bed of lettuce, it was supposed to be a waldorf salad with blue cheese but not a walnut in sight or cheese, on informing the waitress she fetched us a bowl of walnuts but alas no cheese. After this we progressed eventually to our main course, which was also awful, lamb with goats cheese which was so greasy I have tasted it for two days, and no veg was fetched out with the meals, on asking for some veg the waitress came back after 5 minutes with a bowl of carrots and green beans, the carrots were inedible not cooked at all and the green beans also hard. My friend had salmon which was well cooked to say the least it was brown on both sides, another friend had lamb shank and mashed potatoes in a dish, the mash was dry and lumpy and was awful to taste and the lamb shank was not nice. The other friend had fillet steak which was not cooked as asked, he asked for medium to well done and blood was running onto the plate. The other friend had the chicken which was dry and tasteless. The waitress asked us if our meal was okay and we said no it was awful but no one came to see us or discuss it. We eat out every sunday and have never had to complain before but in our eyes this was diabolical food to say the least and the cost was £140 which was not cheap! Also my friend felt something sharp under the table and there was a pint glass broken under the table, also three dirty serviettes and an empty calypso drink packet this is not acceptable as we had pre booked and this should have been rectified. We also had miniture paper serviettes the size of a ladys hankercheif because they had run out of linen ones, three of them dirty under our table. Sirloin Pub and Restaurant Houghton near Preston- a definite must! We booked for the restaurant at eight thirty and there were a reasonable number of diners; you can also eat in the pub and there is a meal deal so there are options to suit everyone! It is the first time we have been here and loved the restaurant dining room that had loads of character, with all the English Pub traditional features but in a modern contemporary style with a variety of diners such as couples & groups of all ages. The service was everything a good restaurant should have without being in your face or stuffy. We were immediately greeted and seated and our orders taken, with complimentary water and dipping breads provided while we waited, the menu was interesting and varied and made a change from what is usually offered which made it difficult to choose! We opted for the Poached Pears in red wine v Blacksticks blue & walnut salad, raspberry vinaigrette, which was pleasingly presented and the flavours all complimented each other which made for a nice light starter so far so good! My husband had the Traditional breed Sirloin steak that came with roasted cherry tomatoes, field mushroom, beer battered onion rings, chunky chips & watercress, it didn't require any additional side dishes it was a man-size meal! I chose the Traditional breed Ribeye steak which came with the same accompaniments and a choice of sauces; the steaks were cooked to perfection with a deep level of flavour that only quality meat can have, making them the best steaks we have had in a very long time! We decided to sample the desserts to see if they also came up to our very high expectations sampling the Toffee & Banana Crème Brulee & Brandy Snap Crisp for my husband and I had the Tiramisu with chocolate and orange ice cream both were sensational! This was an altogether a first class meal, professionally served, beautifully presented and highly recommended. The evening didn't stop there as we went down stairs to the well patronized pub where a female vocal artist was performing, so we stopped for the rest of the evening! I have visited here three times over the past few months and I have never left disappointed. The service is excellent, staff are attentive but leave you to enjoy your meal. On my last visit with my parents the staff arrived at our table immediately with menus and to take our drink orders. Drinks and food arrived quickly and were just as expected. The wine choice is excellent and the wine itself was lovely. The food we chose was well cooked and just as expected. The trio of pork was delicious but we were disappointed that it only came with mash and had no other vegetables whatsoever. It would have been greatly improved if they had reduced the amount of meat and included some vegetables instead. The goosnargh chicken was very lovely and I just managed to finish it all. I am very surprised by other people's comments as I have never had a bad experience at the Sirloin inn and I have been during midweek as well as at weekends when it has been busy., The service and food have always been excellent. read more

I recently visited this restaurant with a few friends who are to say the least particular about their cuisine and fine wines. After reading the reviews on this site I didn't know what to expect, but I have to say I was impressed. I received friendly, professional and attentive service from the waiting staff and manager. The menu was comprehensive and made up of a fine selection of locally sourced produce which I think is important. The food was excellent and cooked to a high standard. The most impressive aspect of the night however, was the excellent comments received from my friends. Not being the easiest people to please with such high standards, it was a relief that the night was such a success and the restaurant exceptional. If you enjoy fine food, a fine selection of wines and you want excellent service then definitely give this place a try! read more

Only got 1 Star because i had no other option. Well.. Just back from 'THE WORST EATING EXPERIENCE EVER" Very very slow service, waited 15 mins for drinks, then 30 mins before a single starter arrived, myself & my wife waited another 20mins before my starter arrived. Main course arrived over an hour & a half after we arrived. My wife & me started to eat the chiefs 'special' Chicken dish with Lancashire cheese stuffing wrapped in parma ham served with four (yes 4) single small new potatoes we each got a few mouthfuls into the meal before discovering that both the chicken breasts were NOT cooked properly at all & partially RAW! ;-( We spoke with the manager & promptly left. My wife is very upset (it was our 5th anniversary) I just really hope we are not ill as a result of this dreadful 'meal' if we are we will seek legal advise. VERY ANGRY! read more

Visited the sirloin for the first time, very nice place arrived at 7.30 they had my name but had no table for us, so was seated on a six seated table, ordered 2 fillet steaks after 45 mins the waiter came and said 2 sirloin steaks, we refused them as we ordered 2fillet steaks, they were taken back we were told it would be another 15 minutes after 20 minutes 2 sirloin steaks were brought to the table, we had asked for medium to well done, I cut into the steak, it was rare on the inside, The waiter took it away and apologised, I waited as my husband ate his meal another 10 minutes, the same piece of steak arrived at the table this time it look quite crisp in the outside like it has been on a grill at high temperature, but on the inside it was still bright pink, I asked the waiter what he though he said it looked rare to him, I got apologies read more

8 of us have just been for Fathers Day and it was fantastic! Not cheap but you really do get what you pay for. We can thoroughly recommend the Scallops and Pâté for starters and the Steak and Ale Pie for main was full of steak. If you like a nice red wine try the Beaujolais, again not cheap at £28 a bottle but really worth it. The dining room had a lovely atmosphere and the staff were great and couldn't do enough. Went on Saturday. Waited 45 minutes for starters, an hour for the main meal, only for it to not be as advertised. Was supposed to be chicken with olive mash and chorizo sauce, arrived as chicken in a mushroom sauce with new potatoes. The dhicken was dry and poor quality for almost £14. Would not recommend!! As for a quality (Pricey) restaurant Just because it costs more doesn't mean the food is good. I would give this one a miss personally. read more

Went tonight and was pleasantly surprised. First time since its reopened . Food was all home made and top quality. My husband had steak and ale pie which was served with a lovely choice of veg and chips and was full of homemade steak. I had the battered fish which was obviously home made batter etc. onion ring s were gorgeous too. Ended with a very light sticky toffee pudding with a rich sauce. Beautiful.
