My daughter turns 9 this weekend and really wanted a Bearded Dragon so we drove out to Roseville yesterday to check out what The Serpentarium had to offer. The inside is very big and spacious, but you are immediately hit in the face with a very pungent smell when you enter. I'm not really sure what the smell was exactly, but we got used to it pretty quickly. We were greeted by a very nice gentleman with vibrant green hair who was very knowledgeable and helpful. He let me know some of the items I would need and which products were the best. We walked around a bit and checked out all of the critters - from snakes, to different types of lizards, to scorpions, tarantulas and even cockroaches! My daughter settled on a very cute 3-4 month old Bearded Dragon that we took home along with some essentials like a rock cave, fake plant, water and food dishes and even some Mealworms and Silkworms! The Serpentarium offers lots of different meal options for your critters as well - which is nice to know that it is a one stop shop! They carry the best brands for all of your tank needs as well. We were helped by another employee once it was time to check out and she was also very friendly and knowledgeable. The Serpentarium staff made me feel very comfortable with my purchase and answered all of my annoying questions with ease which I really appreciated. The Serpentarium will also take any surrendered reptiles as long as it is during operating hours which is nice to know that people have an option if they have no other choice. We will definitely be back to The Serpentarium to pick up more things for our new baby very soon! Check them out! read more

I used to frequent this store several years ago at their other location prior to the move. I was always greeted, the store was clean and the staff were helpful. What the heck happened?? I recently went to their new location and couldn't wait to leave. The store smelled terrible, product displays were very unorganized and a mess, the livestock selection was extremely limited, enclosures were not very clean like they once were, and the employee didn't bother saying a single word or even acknowledge me. They lost my business. read more

I had a very good experience and he was very knowledgeable. He was kind and understanding.

These guys sell reptiles, they r not vets!!!!! This place puts solitary bearded dragon babies n q tank & when ? Said he know how 2 feed them. Anyone who knows care about dragons NEVER do this. This is how missing legs, nippedvtails happens. DO NOTGO THERE!!!! read more

Again, really nice people, but get ready for a loooooong line. Understaffed. Not the employees fault buthappens way too much.

Everyone that works here are extremely helpful and very knowledgeable! We have boughten many reptiles from here with no issues.

The guy with the pink hair seemed annoyed to have to help me, and the entire store stinks horribly. I've been to other locations and they don't smell like that. read more

Jason was truly so helpful. We got our first bearded dragon today and he made the process soooo easy. Thanks again :)

The people were nice, however i got a lizard from them who had visible mites when they took him out of the enclosure. Before i took him home they treated him. But here I am 2 weeks later still dealing with mites. It's a pain. Be aware. read more

The guy at the counter with green hair is very rude. I always go in here and I will no longer be coming back. I just went in there to buy a treat for my breaded dragon and the unwarranted rudeness from him was unnecessary. I was not even in there for linger then 5 minutes and just ruined my whole experience. I will be taking my business elsewhere from now on. read more

Snakes, bugs and lizards, Oh my! Got a chameleon and now of course we are weekly, if not more, visitors to The Serpentarium. Nice, clean spot with knowledgeable staff. At first my husband was the one going to get the crickets each time but with busy schedules, the job has fallen to me quite a few times. Everyone is super nice, answers all my questions without laughing... I appreciate that. Stay tuned for more pics I'll upload on each visit! read more

We came here to get some mealworms, which were $5 for 100, but alive. You can get five pounds usually for $30 or less, but they're dead. There were lots if cool lizards here, including several bearded dragons between $150-200, including the cage I think, chameleons, etc. also turtle and frog supplies. I thought the live plants they had was also pretty cool. They also sale all types of rodents and sizes. What really impressed me was that they did sex determination for $5-10. I have never had a pet store do that, so that was pretty cool. This place was really great, and a wonderful contribution to local businesses to visit. read more

This store is great, very friendly staff and amazing pets and products, Unfortunately the one issue i have is with live feeders. My partners snake will only eat live so every month i get a few smaller ones so they get to the right size before feeding. Never had an issue. Until a few months ago. We got a feeder from them and low and behold they introduced scabious mites into my rat room. I never put the rats together but they traveled through me/my clothes and i didn't even know until i found my rats scratching like crazy and brought them to a vet. Thankfully they do have a new supplier so i hope this isn't going to be an issue for anyone else, Im just a bit upset about it. ‍ Heres before the treatment on one of my rats. It just got so bad from scratching. Shes good now! read more

I come here a lot for my 1.5 y/o beardie!! I would say I am a kinda shy/quiet customer, but the staff are friendly and attentive. They provide a lot advice for new reptile owners based on their expertise/personal experiences too. I also find their general health checks quite useful for when I can't get to the vet. Plus, prices a pretty consistent The only downside that I have experienced-- when the store's SOLD OUT of feeders , but ofc that's understandable read more

My husband and I drove over an hour to check this place out yesterday. We just got a new leopard gecko and wanted wanted to see what they offered. We were not greeted when we walked into the store but the stench hit us like a ton of bricks. Omg why does it smell soo bad in there. No one was friendly or asked us if we needed help. I would not go back. Take the 10 min drive and go to reptile depot. We went there after the serpentarium and everyone was so nice and friendly and they helped answer a bunch of questions we had. And it didnt smell bad. I was soo disappointed in the serpentarium. And why do they have a ton of baby beardies in one tank. That's actually very sad as well. That's not how they should be kept. I guess the reviews are right. read more

My girlfriend and I own a few tarantulas and decided we wanted to add a reptile to our family. With only that in mind, we went to the Serpentarium because we knew the staff would be experienced enough to help us make a decision based on what we were looking for. We knew that we wanted an animal with a good temperment that we could handle without causing stress and wouldn't become so large that a decent sized tank wouldn't be able to support. The friendly staff members mentioned that a Ball Python might be what we were looking for. They showed us the animals in the front and also some stock that they had in the back. We decided on a male Pastel Banana Ball Python, and we couldn't be happier. The staff member, Jason, helped us pick out every item we would need to make sure both the Python and we were happy. We purchased the following: Exo Tera Tank Plants Two hides Cork bark Fake Plants Water Dish Temperature Controled Heating Pad Timer Controled Power Supply Heat Lamp Container Disinfectant Along with the items, we asked the following questions: When was the animal fed last? What is the gender? What is a comfortable temperature for the animal? What humidity does the animal like? How frequently should it be fed? What is the preferred food? Does it need vitamin supplementation? All of these questions and more were answered leaving us with confidence that we could properly care for our new pet. If you're looking for a new addition and don't know where to start, know you're in good hands at the Serpentarium. Thanks for everything! read more

The first thing you notice upon walking in is the OVERWHELMING stench of urine. It is so strong that you cannot stay in the store for long. It's absolutely disgusting. The air is thick and the odor lingers on your clothes and in your hair long after you've walked out of the store. I feel bad for the animals kept in these conditions, as well as the mistreated employees that have to work 8 hours a day in that. It cannot be healthy. Save the horrendous scent of this store (which I cannot overstate.. it is BAD), the inventory is also lacking. Looked like they had a grand total of three racks with reptiles on them, and nothing that really intrigued me enough to keep me in the urine room for longer than a couple of minutes. Over all, 1/5 - lacklustre inventory, small store, POWERFUL stench. Go to Aquarium Depot instead for your reptile needs. Citrus Heights isn't much further, and you can actually breathe in that store. Serpentarium is likely to give you some kind of disease from prolonged exposure. Would avoid ENTIRELY. read more

Love love love this place , if I'm not going in there to buy things for my two bearded dragons I'm Going in to talk to the amazing employees or looking at their well taken care of reptiles . Holy crap the smell of this place is absolute disgusting. My 3 year old daughter wanted to go look at some animals as we were shopping at lakeshore learning next door. The smell of this place is atrocious and you can't be in there more than 5 mins. I've visited a lot of reptile stores and none have smelled this horrible. I don't know how the people in their work there. My eyes were watering and I was wanting to gag the entire time. Do not go here unless I guess you absolutely need to. read more

We came to The Serpentarium a couple weeks ago to inquire about a bearded dragon to see if this would be a good pet option for our family. We walked in knowing absolutely nothing about these beardies and when we left we were full of knowledge and knew this would be a perfect pet! We went back today to pick up our set up and our new little guy. Jason, the manager, walked us through the entire set up process. He started with tank size and options and then step by step went through each item that was necessary to complete our terrarium. He gave us options, recommended things, and taught us in detail about each piece we were getting. He even got our timers set up as well as changed out the bulb on our UVB light to a more efficient one. Jason is so knowledgeable and takes pride in educating new owners. He was absolutely amazing! This process would not have been possible without all the helpful tips and wealth of knowledge we received today. We are now owners of a beautiful bearded dragon as well as Platinum members at the Serpentarium!! We will forever be grateful!! Thank you Jason for being such an amazing expert in your field!! You are truly amazing! read more

We went in planning on getting a baby Bearded Dragon. When we arrived they had just received a 2 year old surrender. She fell in love with him. We left with 2 year old Champion "Champ" Valentino. We adopted him Valentine's weekend. They were so knowledgeable and spent almost an hour with us to make sure we had everything we needed. The girl that helped us (I'm so sorry I forgot her name) was so great. You can tell she really cared. She made the experience for my daughter and myself so fabulous. Thank you for your great customer service and being a great advocate for these little reptiles. If the prior owner reads this know that your little dragon is spoiled and loved so much. read more

If you are looking for a new pet please check this place out the people working there are super knowledgeable and were great to work with special shout out to Jasmin and Alexsis both very knowledgeable and answered every question I had (which I had a million) I looked at a few other shops one very large one on auburn blvd and did not get the same care and attention as I did from the Serpentarium on Douglas. They also take safe surrender reptiles and regime them at a very low discounted price. They had everything I needed to make a perfect home for our new beardy (bearded dragon) can't say enough good things about this place. It's small and may be hard to find but definitely try them before you settle for somewhere else read more

Visited for the first time 2/2023 to ask for some info on our leopard gecko. He seems to be in good health but we wanted to make sure we were doing the right things. We got a lot of conflicting information online. Michael was super helpful and knowledgeable and took the time to talk to me and my son about feeding, habitat and more. The other staff was very friendly and approachable. The shop was clean and we didn't feel rushed, my son got to ask questions about the other reptiles there too. Great experience, will definitely be back! read more

I am shocked how badly this store smells. The smell was strong before i even walked inside. Once inside i could not tolerate it. It was sickening. I walked out before i even hit the first enclosures. Being my first experience, I'd say it was excellent. I came in for only answers and Drew almost got me walking out with one. I asked a million questions! There were answers for everything thing, even when I countered him. He was professional, knowledgeable, and helpful. They were busy and yet he made time to answer my questions. Originally, I came in interested in a turtle, but they didn't have the one I wanted. He offered another option (same price area) and it was adorable! I almost walked out with it, but new better. I needed to check wIth my principal, my husband, and find a funding source. If I get all the yes and the funding f, I wIll definitely be back! Thank you Drew! read more

Amazing. I purchased a Hermann tortoise as a first time reptile owner. The staff graciously offered to keep him for a week while we built his enclosure. Then, when I came in to buy equipment (lamps, supplements, etc.), someone took the time to help me with a very kind attitude. Then, when I got the tortoise, they were wonderful with answering my final questions. It never felt like a condescending experience. As a beginner I really appreciated that.
