My daughter turns 9 this weekend and really wanted a Bearded Dragon so we drove out to Roseville yesterday to check out what The Serpentarium had to offer. The inside is very big and spacious, but you are immediately hit in the face with a very pungent smell when you enter. I'm not really sure what the smell was exactly, but we got used to it pretty quickly. We were greeted by a very nice gentleman with vibrant green hair who was very knowledgeable and helpful. He let me know some of the items I would need and which products were the best. We walked around a bit and checked out all of the critters - from snakes, to different types of lizards, to scorpions, tarantulas and even cockroaches! My daughter settled on a very cute 3-4 month old Bearded Dragon that we took home along with some essentials like a rock cave, fake plant, water and food dishes and even some Mealworms and Silkworms! The Serpentarium offers lots of different meal options for your critters as well - which is nice to know that it is a one stop shop! They carry the best brands for all of your tank needs as well. We were helped by another employee once it was time to check out and she was also very friendly and knowledgeable. The Serpentarium staff made me feel very comfortable with my purchase and answered all of my annoying questions with ease which I really appreciated. The Serpentarium will also take any surrendered reptiles as long as it is during operating hours which is nice to know that people have an option if they have no other choice. We will definitely be back to The Serpentarium to pick up more things for our new baby very soon! Check them out! read more

At first my husband was the one going to get the crickets each time but with busy schedules, the job has fallen to me quite a few times. We came here to get some mealworms, which were $5 for 100, but alive. You can get five pounds usually for $30 or less, but they're dead. There were lots if cool lizards here, including several bearded dragons between $150-200, including the cage I think, chameleons, etc. also turtle and frog supplies. I thought the live plants they had was also pretty cool. They also sale all types of rodents and sizes. What really impressed me was that they did sex determination for $5-10. I have never had a pet store do that, so that was pretty cool. This place was really great, and a wonderful contribution to local businesses to visit. read more

This store is great, very friendly staff and amazing pets and products, Unfortunately the one issue i have is with live feeders. My partners snake will only eat live so every month i get a few smaller ones so they get to the right size before feeding. Never had an issue. Until a few months ago. We got a feeder from them and low and behold they introduced scabious mites into my rat room. I never put the rats together but they traveled through me/my clothes and i didn't even know until i found my rats scratching like crazy and brought them to a vet. Thankfully they do have a new supplier so i hope this isn't going to be an issue for anyone else, Im just a bit upset about it. ‍ Heres before the treatment on one of my rats. My husband and I drove over an hour to check this place out yesterday. We just got a new leopard gecko and wanted wanted to see what they offered. We were not greeted when we walked into the store but the stench hit us like a ton of bricks. Omg why does it smell soo bad in there. No one was friendly or asked us if we needed help. I would not go back. Take the 10 min drive and go to reptile depot. We went there after the serpentarium and everyone was so nice and friendly and they helped answer a bunch of questions we had. And it didnt smell bad. I was soo disappointed in the serpentarium. And why do they have a ton of baby beardies in one tank. That's actually very sad as well. That's not how they should be kept. My girlfriend and I own a few tarantulas and decided we wanted to add a reptile to our family. With only that in mind, we went to the Serpentarium because we knew the staff would be experienced enough to help us make a decision based on what we were looking for. We knew that we wanted an animal with a good temperment that we could handle without causing stress and wouldn't become so large that a decent sized tank wouldn't be able to support. The first thing you notice upon walking in is the OVERWHELMING stench of urine. It is so strong that you cannot stay in the store for long. It's absolutely disgusting. The air is thick and the odor lingers on your clothes and in your hair long after you've walked out of the store. I feel bad for the animals kept in these conditions, as well as the mistreated employees that have to work 8 hours a day in that. It cannot be healthy. Save the horrendous scent of this store (which I cannot overstate.. it is BAD), the inventory is also lacking. Looked like they had a grand total of three racks with reptiles on them, and nothing that really intrigued me enough to keep me in the urine room for longer than a couple of minutes. Over all, 1/5 - lacklustre inventory, small store, POWERFUL stench. Go to Aquarium Depot instead for your reptile needs. Citrus Heights isn't much further, and you can actually breathe in that store. Serpentarium is likely to give you some kind of disease from prolonged exposure. Would avoid ENTIRELY. read more

We came to The Serpentarium a couple weeks ago to inquire about a bearded dragon to see if this would be a good pet option for our family. We walked in knowing absolutely nothing about these beardies and when we left we were full of knowledge and knew this would be a perfect pet! We went back today to pick up our set up and our new little guy. Jason, the manager, walked us through the entire set up process. He started with tank size and options and then step by step went through each item that was necessary to complete our terrarium. He gave us options, recommended things, and taught us in detail about each piece we were getting. He even got our timers set up as well as changed out the bulb on our UVB light to a more efficient one. Jason is so knowledgeable and takes pride in educating new owners. He was absolutely amazing! If you are looking for a new pet please check this place out the people working there are super knowledgeable and were great to work with special shout out to Jasmin and Alexsis both very knowledgeable and answered every question I had (which I had a million) I looked at a few other shops one very large one on auburn blvd and did not get the same care and attention as I did from the Serpentarium on Douglas. They also take safe surrender reptiles and regime them at a very low discounted price. Visited for the first time 2/2023 to ask for some info on our leopard gecko. He seems to be in good health but we wanted to make sure we were doing the right things. We got a lot of conflicting information online. Michael was super helpful and knowledgeable and took the time to talk to me and my son about feeding, habitat and more. Ok story time. So me and my lids went to lunch at el burrito a couple doors down. They have thee best birria tacos, but anyways we get done and my kids ar elike "lets go to the reptile store", so I say ok, even though I dont normally like the smell of these types of stores. But imma do it for them. BUT when we walked through the door my kids IMMEDIATELY STOPPED, turned around and loomed at me with the most disturbing looks. And i said "what? Does it smell bad? And the STINCH was that of hot cat piss that was left to marinate in the car during the heat wave all week long. We have been to many reptile events, stores, zoos, all of the above. So i guess yall can clean, no better yet throw all the tanks away and start over after you have BLEACHED the floors, walls, and windows. This may qualify as a health code violation. Jasmine is the absolute best!! She's always helpful, friendly and very knowledgeable every time we stop in. When we first got our chameleon she helped us find ALL the right pieces for our enclosure from wood to flowers and even gave us decorating ideas. She even found the exact piece of wood we'd been looking for after endlessly searching and also offered to set up the entire enclosure if we needed extra help!
