Our oldest child had a positive experience in the younger classes, despite ongoing staffing challenges, and we initially felt we had found a special community. Unfortunately, by the Pre-K year, the program no longer resembled the nature-school experience that initially drew our family in. Persistent understaffing, extremely high staff turnover, and leadership challenges appeared to erode the quality and consistency of the program over time. Stable relationships are critical for young children, and the revolving door of teachers and staff made it difficult to feel confident in the environment. We also experienced situations that raised concerns about safety and communication. When concerns were brought forward, we often felt they were minimized or dismissed rather than addressed transparently and collaboratively. As parents, we were looking for accountability and partnership. Instead, we frequently left conversations feeling unheard and frustrated. What was especially disappointing was watching the program drift away from the thoughtful, intentional nature-based learning environment that had originally attracted us. Outdoor time remained part of the day, but the rich, well-supported nature school experience we envisioned was not consistently evident in practice. There were individual teachers who cared deeply about the children, and we are grateful for the positive experiences our child had in the earlier years. However, concerns about leadership, staffing instability, safety, and communication ultimately led us to withdraw our younger child and seek a different preschool. Choosing a preschool is one of the most important decisions families make. Based on our experience, Frog Pond was not able to provide the stable, transparent, high-quality nature school environment we were hoping for.

Though it was only a few months, he learned more than he ever did at two other preschool centers in Lorton. He not only learned skills like sight reading and sign language, but he learned so much about the structures that would be in place in kindergarten. The transition from the Nest to kindergarten has been great- I truly believe it is because of the care they gave him and the boundaries they held. We planned on sending my daughter as well, but a late change to her IEP modified our plans. Despite unenrolling her from the Nest with very notice, the management took the time to understand our situation and did not penalize us for the late withdraw. They truly care about children and do everything they can do support. We are forever grateful!

I liked that the staff seemed generally friendly, they have a meal calendar for the kids, and the preschool looked active and lively. The infant -toddler room kind of looked sad though. Kind of inactive and quiet, I guess is the best way to describe it. And I have a toddler. It was a small room and I think it would be better to separate the two rooms but I think it might be a staffing issue? Either way maybe down the road I may consider them, as it is a close enough location which may suit our childcare needs. But nothing really wowed me from that visit for a toddler.

In another classroom, the "caretaker" was yelling at the child who was trying to get her attention while another one was saying "I'm just going to ignore you. I have been out of school for a handful of years but Jim (the owner and lead tutor) runs this place so well and got me up to speed again FAST. He hires very sharp tutors to assist with the volume of this popular tutoring location. All of his employees are extremely friendly, and understanding. Most of the customers are in grade school, but they can teach anything math related. They were even able to help me with some physics and chemistry too. Such a broad range of experts they have on staff. Not only that, but before I began, Jim wanted to ensure he could prepare himself and his team for my unique tutoring request (military) so he asked to borrow my study guides for a couple days before I began. As soon as I started on day 1, he had already lined up his best subject matter experts to work with me weekly. This helped me the most, the way they tailor instruction to the needs of each customer/student. Jim really got my money's worth this way! Administratively, the place is super clean and the cost is very good! I choose the unlimited package because I wanted to be able to get help as many times a week as I could handle while working full time. After a few weeks I felt solid with my math knowledge and transitioned over to physics and chemistry with the remaining time I had. This worked out great because this Mathnasium currently has an expert physics teacher on staff who made learning these tough subjects simple. The staff is constantly wiping down tables and sanitizing materials huge plus! If you have a question and raise your hand, a tutor is by your side within seconds. Also one of the biggest things Jim did to help me once he found out which math sections had me struggling the most was he provided me with Mathnasium lessons! They are print out work sheets you can only access if you're a customer and they make learning math so easy. I probably ran through dozens of these because they were so helpful and made remembering complex math steps so easy which is huge! Keep up the good work Mathnasium!
