Cute tiki bar in Lawrence. I saw multiple Bachelorette parties there in one night, but there were also people dressed in formal wear, students and everything in between! I just had margaritas while I was there and they were only $5 a piece which I thought was a good price. They tasted like carbonated minute maid Lemonade and were awesome. There was a $3 cover to get in, which I thought was weird considering there was no live music or event on, but I'm not familiar with area practices. Definitely a fun place to go, will be back. This place is really goofy, and youv'e got to keep that in mind before going - it's packed to the brim with a young crowd and has a silly, faux-beachy interior. If you go you really must try their signature drinks - they taste pretty awful (WAY too syrupy) but are cheap and too much fun to pass up: the Shark Attack, for example, comes with a plastic shark filled with grenadine that you pour in yourself. Random keychains and beads dangle from other drinks as well, so you can always expect a souvenir from the Sandbar. So, yeah - the place is sort of gross and sticky and filled with faded neon, but I'm not ashamed to say that sometimes, hot pink flamingo-shaped crazy straws in my drinks make me happy. read more

Whenever I'm back in the River City, I have to head into this place. It opened when I was in school in the early '90's. It was a hole in the wall then, and it's still pretty much a hole in the wall now, but where else in Lawrence can you get a bit of Key West? Put a dollar on the wall, play some Jimmy Buffet, drink to your heart's content, and enjoy a completely laid back crowd without a whole lot of students that you would expect in a college town. read more

Best bar, worst drinks ‍ this is my favorite dive bar in Lawrence--the music, the price, and the vibe are all good but the drinks make me sad. The drinks they offer on the menu are sugary as heck and they all transport me into tomorrow's hangover, and their generic cocktails aren't much better. The drinks were good. They have a shot wheel that provides "discounted" shots (not really discounted, just makes you think its discounted because it's on a wheel.) Everything was incredibly sticky and dirty. I've been to plenty on bars, but you probably shouldn't have trouble picking your feet up because the floors are so sticky. The bar was VERY small. The music was 80's and 90's. That's my kind of music, but it may not be to some people. The bartenders were very nice and attentive though. Overall, a 3/5. read more

I absolutely love this place, however tonight the door man was extremely inappropriate. I had friends visiting from out of town and I really wanted them to have a good time in lawrence so I decided to take them to sandbar. The line was expected, but the door man was obnoxious. I worked in management in nightlife entertainment in los angels for years and I never thought a human being like this existed in Kansas. He cursed at me and physically kicked paying customers out of the establishment. I hope the owners fire this employee. His is a white male with blonde hair and worked Friday night March 5th at 11:30 pm. Please let this man go because he is ruining this bar. Again, I love this place and I don't want to discourage anyone from coming here. read more

Peach, Dave, and their staff are top notch. They are a get-to-know-you bar and always treat their customers like gold. Love this place. Doesn't get much better for happy hour after work or meeting friends on the weekend. Anybody that posts anything negative about this place has got to be a miserable person. If you like a fun atmosphere and nostalgic 90s music, this is the place to go. Very fun place to go. The best part is that all drinks come with a trinket (a rubber shark, beads, silly glasses, etc) which makes for a lighthearted environment. My only thing is that it is incredibly cramped as this bar is not as big as it looks on the outside. Sometimes it takes a long time to get it because they are at full capacity by 11-12. My other concern that I have recently noticed is that I believe the drinks to be watered down. If you are looking to get schnockered, its probably best to start drinking somewhere else or just bring a lot of money. read more

The bouncer was very rude. We paid the cover for two people to get in. He actually took money for 4 people to get in and said that we would get in soon. He let the two girls in our party in, and he let them buy 4 drinks, but he did not let us in. He told us that we were blocking the doorway and shut the door on us. We asked why he shut the door, and he said, Because we need to shut the door. The door had not been shut before this point, even though we had waited 30 minutes and seen the door open. When we said that we were leaving, he told us that we needed to leave. He understood that we wanted to leave because we were upset, and he kicked us out instead. We wanted to finish the drinks we had first, but he told us to get out. We were on the patio area and not outside the bar. He continued to eject us from the bar area, despite the fact that we had not finished our drinks. Another employee apologized for the behavior of the bouncer, and several patrons expressed the fact that the bouncer has been known to be extremely rude. We hope that Sandbar will be welcoming to all patrons, rather than ejecting patrons who have waited for over 30 minutes to enter. We will not return to this bar. read more
